Having second thoughts....

After months of searching and almost every name turned down by my DH, we finally agreed on the name [name_m]Jones[/name_m] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. We love it. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband’s name is [name_m]Brooks[/name_m], and I love how both names are one syllable and end in “s”. But now I’m wondering if this name is too weird as a first name. Is it too uncommon and just plain weird? Yes, I know if we like it just use it, but I do want to hear your opinions before releasing it to our friends and family.

What do you think?

I would prefer [name_u]James[/name_u]. It’s also one syllable, ends in S, and is a surname. I see nothing wrong with [name_m]Jones[/name_m] as a first name. I think it’s refreshing. However you need a long surname to help distinguish which is the surname. [name_m]Jones[/name_m] [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] is a little confusing (although cute) but [name_m]Jones[/name_m] Worthington is a little clearer.

Same as above. As long as last name is clear I think it’s refreshing. If not [name_u]James[/name_u] is a wonderful option, one of my faves!

Thank you emekct and rainydaygarden. [name_f]My[/name_f] brother’s name is [name_u]James[/name_u], so I would rather not use that. I have always loved his name and tend to like more classic names, but my DH likes “different” names (like his). I think that’s how we finally ended up agreeing on [name_m]Jones[/name_m]. It is classic (surname), yet still very different.

Our last name sounds similar to Stoddard. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think thats distinguished enough?

I don’t think it’s strange at all. Using surnames as names is a very common thing, and [name_m]Jones[/name_m] is a well known name. In fact if anything I consider it a very tame choice, if a lovely one. Very much like [name_u]James[/name_u], which is also a surname but just as well known as a first.

I don’t like [name_m]Jones[/name_m] for many reasons. Mainly, it clashes with your surname and it would be VERY like your child having two last names. Maybe [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] or [name_m]Julias[/name_m] or [name_m]Judas[/name_m] instead?

Yes Stoddard is clearly the surname here so that would work well. A lot of berries are going to say don’t end the first name and start the surname with the same letter/sound but I think it sounds okay.

It’s fine. Nice choice in my opinion.

I don’t mind it at all and I would like the nn of [name_m]Jonny[/name_m].

[name_u]Love[/name_u] the nn [name_m]Jonny[/name_m] also. [name_f]My[/name_f] girlfriend’s last name was [name_m]Jones[/name_m], and sometimes we’d just call her ‘[name_m]Jones[/name_m]’, as a term of endearment. It’s a friendly, happy name. FYI: He may get called [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] [name_m]Jones[/name_m].

I was also going to suggest [name_m]Jonas[/name_m], or maybe [name_m]Justus[/name_m].

If you’re hoping to avoid confusion maybe something more definitive as a first name would be better; [name_u]Jude[/name_u] or [name_m]Joel[/name_m].

I know you said you like the one-syllable but there’s also [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] or [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] as alternatives.

Not a fan of [name_m]Jones[/name_m]. To me, [name_m]Brooks[/name_m] flows well enough for a 1st name but [name_m]Jones[/name_m] doesn’t.
I prefer:
[name_m]Wes[/name_m]
[name_m]Fox[/name_m]
[name_u]Blaise[/name_u]
[name_m]Parks[/name_m]
[name_u]Max[/name_u]/[name_m]Maks[/name_m]/Macs
[name_m]Piers[/name_m]
[name_m]Oaks[/name_m]
[name_m]Miles[/name_m]
