My husband and I are waiting to adopt an infant, and we want to have names picked since we could get “the call” at any time. We found a girl’s name pretty quickly that we both love, but we have struggled for months with picking a boy’s name!
So far we’ve only come up with two that we both like (but don’t love): [name]Doran[/name], [name]Darius[/name]
Here are some that I like, but my husband doesn’t: [name]Roland[/name], [name]Milo[/name], [name]August[/name], [name]Rowan[/name] (and lots of others!)
Here are the ones that my husband has suggested that I don’t like too much: [name]Ridley[/name], [name]Hadrian[/name]
I’d be happy to hear your thoughts on the names I’ve posted here, or some more suggestions that I can run by my husband.
[name]Doran[/name]…is the surname of a friend. He pronounces it DOOR-in, but occasionally has people try to make it doe-[name]RAN[/name]. I’m neutral on the name.
[name]Darius[/name]…makes me think of a [name]Roman[/name] legionnaire. I’m fairly neutral on this one too.
[name]Roland[/name]…is a favorite of mine. I’ve never been crazy about the possibility of [name]Rollo[/name] as a nn, though.
[name]Milo[/name]…is a quirky and diminutive to me. Not a favorite, though I do see the appeal.
[name]August[/name]…has always struck me as one of those names that would be hard tom live with if you didn’t have a certain sort of personality. But [name]Gus[/name] would always be a back-up.
[name]Rowan[/name]…leans feminine to me.
[name]Ridley[/name]…just seems like a generic surname to me…nothing particularly appealing.
[name]Hadrian[/name]…would always be mistaken for [name]Adrian[/name].
I like several of [name]Mischa[/name]'s suggestions…[name]Donovan[/name], [name]Griffin[/name], [name]Rafferty[/name], [name]Jasper[/name], [name]Cormac[/name], [name]Jude[/name], [name]Duncan[/name]
Our girl name is [name]Nova[/name]. We love it because it has a little bit of a nerdy feel to it (to us), but is also really pretty and not too unusual. It also has spiritual significance to us, since it means “new”, which brings to mind Bible verses about all things being made new. And I like that it ends in “a” like my name.
Now if only we could find a boy name that meets all of those criteria! Thank you all for your suggestions, I will be pondering them!
Tell your dh you are naming the baby and he can just hold your hand.
Seriously.
I spent forever trying to please my dh. Now I have a 3 yr old with a name I never liked. It was very disappointing for me. I spent so much time and energy picking his name, scouring boards, thinking about it, only to have him dismiss my choices. I am guessing your dh is not scouring books and websites for the perfect name. This means, he has not given it as much thought and energy as you. Check out my history of posts to see how broken hearted I was after the fact. I wish I never gave in. I still feel sad over it sometimes.
Some uncommon Bible names that end with an -a sound: [name]Asa[/name], [name]Elijah[/name], [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Jedediah[/name], [name]Jeremiah[/name], [name]Jonah[/name], [name]Josiah[/name], [name]Micah[/name], [name]Noah[/name], [name]Obadiah[/name], and Tobiad. I particularly like [name]Jonah[/name]!
