With our first, my husband and I both loved one and only one name, so the decision was super easy: [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. Now we’re having a boy and just aren’t really getting anywhere. I have read and read this forum and can’t seem to find the boy name that we’re both excited about in the same way. Maybe you can help me find what I’m missing? Part of the problem is SO MANY names one of us has a weird association with. Generally our style is kind of old-timey and unusualish but not too over the top. His last name will be a horrible, long, hyphenated name so I’m trying not to make that worse ha ha.
Names we like but don’t ~love~:
[name_u]Murray[/name_u]
love the nn [name_u]Bertie[/name_u] but meh about [name_m]Albert[/name_m], [name_m]Bertram[/name_m], and [name_m]Bernard[/name_m]
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_m]Miles[/name_m]
[name_u]August[/name_u] nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u] (I’m due in early [name_u]July[/name_u] and I worry it’ll seem like he was early but we went for [name_u]August[/name_u] anyway? Is that silly?)
we both really like [name_m]Henry[/name_m] but nixed it for family reasons, plus it’s sooooooo popular.
Names one of us liked but the other thought was too much or vetoed for whatever reason:
[name_m]Laszlo[/name_m]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Bjorn[/name_m] or [name_m]Bear[/name_m]
[name_m]Ulysses[/name_m]
[name_m]Ignatius[/name_m] nn [name_m]Iggy[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_m]Griffith[/name_m]
[name_u]Remy[/name_u]
From your list I really love [name_u]August[/name_u] nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u]. I wouldn’t expect anyone to think he was born early. If you both really like it I think you should definitely choose it. [name_u]Gus[/name_u] would be great with a long hypehenated last name.
I would love [name_m]Archer[/name_m] & [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] or [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] & [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]. From your lists, I like [name_m]Simon[/name_m], [name_m]Miles[/name_m], [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Griffith[/name_m], [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_m]Ignatius[/name_m]… [name_m]Nate[/name_m] is another nn idea for [name_m]Ignatius[/name_m]? Maybe [name_u]Theo[/name_u]? [name_m]Gareth[/name_m]? [name_m]Warren[/name_m] or [name_u]Laurence[/name_u] nn [name_u]Ren[/name_u]?
Fwiw, I would think it stranger to name a child the month he was born in. I’d have my fingers crossed for [name_u]July[/name_u]!
I really like your “vetoed” list but I totally get how some of them might feel like a bit much. I think you hit the perfect sweet spot with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] - unusual, old-fashioned, funky and fun.
[name_u]Bertie[/name_u] would fit in really well with that style, but I get that none of those options feels quite right. [name_m]How[/name_m] about something a bit more distant like [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m] or [name_u]Oberon[/name_u]/[name_u]Auberon[/name_u], or an international variation like [name_u]Bern[/name_u], [name_m]Bernt[/name_m] or [name_m]Ebert[/name_m] to get you there?
Ooh good ideas for finding a way to [name_u]Bertie[/name_u]. Thank you! I hate to be gender essentialist but for some reason it just feels harder to find boy names in our not too boring/not too odd comfort zone. [name_u]Auberon[/name_u] is a cool one!
