so i have a character who is native hawaiian, and lives on Kauai. short, tan, dark hair and big eyes. stubborn, loves coffee, and the ocean. clouds too. has a rly cute boyfriend that loves her more than life itself. I’m stuck on a name for her. Her boyfriend will be [name_m]Lio[/name_m]. Some Hawaiian names are :
Lilinoe- it means “fine mist” or “fine rain”, the name of a goddess in Hawaiian mythology, the personfication of mist.
Kainoa- I’ve seen it listed as unisex but it seems far more popular for boys. It means “the namesake”, given to a child named after someone else. Others have suggested that it comes from [name_u]Kai[/name_u] (sea) and [name_f]Noa[/name_f] (free of taboo; commoner), both unisex names that can be used on their own, though it seems like it’s more of a modern invention which could still work out.
[name_m]Luka[/name_m]- it’s the Hawaiian form of [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], so it’s definitely a unisex name if you choose to use it.
[name_f]Malia[/name_f]- the Hawaiian form of [name_f]Mary[/name_f], it could also be a variant of another Hawaiian name, Malie, meaning “tranquil”, “calm”, “serene”, and “quiet”.
[name_u]Hali[/name_u]'a- it’s both a Hawaiian name and a word that means “fond remembrance” or “cherised memory”. Spelled [name_f]Halia[/name_f], it’s a Greek name meaning “briny”, the name of a seay nymph.
[name_f]Makani[/name_f]- a Hawaiian unisex name meaning “wind”.
[name_f]Alula[/name_f]- a name with a lot of cultural background, in [name_m]Hawaii[/name_m] it’s the name of an endangered plant species found only in [name_m]Hawaii[/name_m].
Maui- the name of a demigod in Polynesian and Hawaiian mythology.
Pikake- the Hawaiian word for the jasmine flower, as well as the name for the peacock. Pronounced pee-kah-kay.
Nai’a- the Hawaiian word for “dolphin”.
[name_f]Leilani[/name_f]- a Hawaiian unisex name meaning “heavenly flowers” or “royal child”.
[name_u]Kai[/name_u]- a unisex name that means “sea”
[name_f]Lani[/name_f]- it means “sky, heavenly, royal”
[name_f]Lana[/name_f]- it means “calm in still waters” or “afloat” in Hawaiian
[name_f]Lea[/name_f]- the name of a goddess in Hawaiian myth, of canoe builders.
Momi- means “pearl”
[name_f]Kiana[/name_f]- the Hawaiian form of [name_f]Diana[/name_f]
[name_f]Noa[/name_f]- as well as being the Hawaiian form of [name_f]Noa[/name_f], it’s also a Hawaiian unisex name meaning “commoner; free of taboo”
Nainoa- it means “the namesake”, similar to Kainoa.
[name_f]Kala[/name_f]- the Hawaiian form of [name_f]Sarah[/name_f], I’ve also seen it listed as meaning “sun” and “free of sorcerery”
Nalu- means “wave”
Ahi- means “fire”
Makana- means “gift”.
