Hazel and Augustus?

I absolutely love the names [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], but as some of you might know, there is a book/movie called The Fault In Our Stars, and the two main characters have those names. I am not a super fan of the book/movie/author, but I still love these names. Are they too similar to the movie or could I get away with it?

They are lovely names and i wouldn’t let the reference stop you from using them- but you would have to be prepared for a LOT of comments, and people would probably assume you were a fan of the book.

Yeah I agree. They are great names and go perfectly together however I saw the connection instantly as will many others :(. I don’t think it should stop you from using them however you will get comments and assumptions.

They are both beautiful names, but as a [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_u]Green[/name_u] fan, I did immediately think of the book. And since they were in a romantic relationship and one of them dies, I don’t know if I’d actually use them together.

If you do decide to use these names, you are probably aware that you will hear a lot of comments and questions. [name_m]Just[/name_m] don’t let them bother you. You can always explain how these names were meaningful to you and your partner and you felt that meaning outweighs the association.

Good luck and congrats!

I love the names together! I haven’t seen the movie or read the book, so I had no idea there might be an issue until I read your post.

Honestly, I don’t think it’s an issue. Names always go in fads for various reasons… but these names remain reasonably uncommon. They’re both very lovely. I’d still use them!

I haven’t heard of the book so did not make that connection but the two names are so nice together.

I love the names together but, yes, I did immediately notice the TFOIS connection. However, I don’t think it’s that big an issue because I don’t think many will notice it.

I have never read this book but it’s still my main association. Sorry!

I haven’t read the book or seen the movie, but I do know the connection. I probably wouldn’t use them together.

I wouldn’t use them together, yes because of the book, and more because they both have (spoiler??) cancer in the book.

I think a lot of people will immediately think of the book/movie

I’ve heard of the book but didn’t see the connection. They’re both such sweet names and I think they’re usable together.

I haven’t read the book or seen the film but I still saw the connection. I would not use them together.

I love both names and they fit together perfectly!
I also noticed the connection but I think they are still usable together and the association with FIOS will fade in a few years.

I think it depends on your age how much these characters would be mentioned to you when you’re out with your kids. The younger you are, the more likely it is that your friends, acquaintances, co-workers, etc. of a similar age will mention the connection as they’re the most likely to have read it.

Some may say it’s just a book/movie, it’s been a few years, no one really remembers, however, the book has been really popular and was talked about a lot as it was a new kind of book to many people so I think it’s a book people remember and will mention.

Now you have to decide if it bothers you personally that people may always/often comment on this, does it take anything away from the names for you? Would it annoy you if that may be their first thought/comment instead of “what lovely names” or “such cute children”?

i love both names too, but wouldn’t use them together because of the book/movie. if this doesn’t bother you, i’d say go for it! if you’re willing to use a variation of one of the names you could use august or august instead of agustus, although I do beleive you would still receive a few comments:)
