Hazel or Sophie for baby sister

I’ve liked the name Hazel since I was about 14 when I saw it as one of my great great grandma’s names. I liked it because it’s a nature name and kind of a foodie name. Since then the name has caught on and become pretty popular.

Now 20 years later I’m finally having a GIRL and unsure about going with Hazel. First because I’m not sure it goes with my other kid’s names (Oliver Daniel and Benjamin Platte). Hazel feels more trendy than Oliver and Benjamin. Worried that Hazel will go out of style as quickly as it’s coming in, and then would really pin the person to a specific age —become the next old lady name.

My husband and I are considering Sophie (not Sophia) instead. Because it has a softer sound to go with our last name (we have a stronger sounding, one syllable last name). And because Sophie seems to match Oliver and Benjamin better. But is Sophie too popular? We’re really torn.

We’re not sure of middle names but these are some ideas.
Hazel Emilia,
Sophie Emilia,
Sophie Grace,
Sophie Elizabeth

Do you prefer Hazel or Sophie? Which goes best with our sibset? Thanks in advance!

[name_f]Sofia[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] are two of the most popular names right now, so [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] will likely feel a lot more popular than it actually is. I would recommend going with [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] since it’s the name you’ve always loved

Another vote for [name_u]Hazel[/name_u]. Also I think sibset matching is overrated. Go with your love!

[name_f]My[/name_f] daughters name is [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] so obviously I love it and I do think it fits wonderfully with your boys but I think [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] fits better.

[name_u]Hazel[/name_u] [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] is really lovely as are all the [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] options. I think [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] works the best - [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is gorgeous but also a little simple and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] again very pretty but the flow is very slightly off (in my accent at least).

[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] Hazel/ [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] Hazel/ [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] Grace/ [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] sounds perfect unless you would only want [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] in the first name spot.

Both are gorgeous but I feel [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] feels more special

Firstly congratulations :partying_face::partying_face:

[name_u]Hazel[/name_u] is my favourite from the two names to me [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] (as I went to school with loads) is a bit predictable and just not as sparkly as [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] which yes is statistically rising in popularity but I have only met one baby [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] so to me doesn’t feel overly trendy.

[name_u]Hazel[/name_u] feels warm and inviting with a cosy autumnal vibe which is imagery I love. I think [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] sounds gorgeous with [name_u]Oliver[/name_u] & [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] so simplistic and overall really pretty.

I adore [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]!

i’m going against others here and giving sophie a vote.

i think both hazel and sophie are popular in their own way, hazel is quite trendy as you said it’s popular in the charts and i think it will keep rising because it ticks the boxes of vintage, nature, boho vibes.

sophie is popular, less popular than hazel though, and will probably get more popular due to the sophia and sofia being up at the top but i don’t think it’s necessarily as ‘trendy’. To me, sophie is more timeless and classic i don’t think it will ever feel dated. It also reminds me of mamma mia and sophie from the roald dahl novel The BFG which I think are lovely associations.

i’m in the UK, where sophie is more popular than hazel but i don’t hear it that often i think people are still going with sophia more.

i actually think [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] makes a lovely combo but out if your choices [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] is my favourite.

oh i also think that sophie goes much better with your sons’ names.

hope this helps x

[name_u]Hazel[/name_u] definitely doesn’t feel more trendy than [name_u]Oliver[/name_u] and [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] to me. I’d put them in the same category - fashionable with vintage charm. I think it has enough historical background to not be stuck in one era.
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f], while nice, doesn’t sound as exciting to me. I wouldn’t think twice about it while [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] get a “cute name!”

I think both work nicely with your boys’ names, and both are nice in their own ways. [name_f]My[/name_f] vote goes to [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]!

I think that [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] goes perfectly with your boys names! It was one my my top names, so I may be biased.

I think [name_u]Hazel[/name_u]. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] are both in the top 20 where I’m from and so feel hugely popular as they are quite similar. I know at least five Sophies/Sophias under 10. It depends what is popular where you are but I would go [name_u]Hazel[/name_u].

[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]! I think it fits perfectly with your boys.

Sophie goes better with her brothers but if you prefer Hazel then you should use it!

I like Hazel better! I think it goes with Oliver and Benjamin really well - it feels very classic and pretty to me.

We have very similar tastes in names! [name_u]Oliver[/name_u], [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u], [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] are all very high on my list.

While I probably love [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] equally, and actually think they both match their brothers well, they give off different vibes. Perhaps it’s an idea to meet her first and hopefully she’ll just beam one or the other. I don’t think either of them will date, so I wouldn’t worry about that. [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] would be the more surprising choice to me, but you really can’t go wrong!

I had the same situation, minus the siblings, I had a name I loved forever and it climbed the charts like cookoo bananas, and now it might seem that I named her to be trendy or it might seem dated in 20 years. What I decided was I loved it and I would use it as her first name, and I am still happy that I did it.

Personally I prefer [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] on her own but also with your set. However, I don’t think [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] will become dated as quickly as it became popular.

I love [name_u]Hazel[/name_u]! It’s so pretty. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] kinda feels overdone.

Thank you everyone! You’ve all been so helpful!!

Another thing to consider is how it fits with our surname. Our surname is one syllable and kind of harsh sounding. It’s also another obscure color word. Maybe it’s a bit much to have two color words? [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] I feel compliments our surname beautifully —but I can also see [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is quite common and maybe overused.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

I think that both names are lovely & fit equally well w/Oliver & [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u]. [name_f]My[/name_f] vote goes to [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] though. It’s the name that you loved for so long, & feels special. It’s sort of popular, but I don’t think that it’s trendy. It’s old fashioned & a little artsy. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is way more popular than Hazel; especially if you factor in all of the Sophias that are called [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]. [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] is gorgeous.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

I think both names are beautiful so you can’t really go wrong whichever way you go, but I would say you should go with [name_u]Hazel[/name_u]. It’s the name you’ve always loved, and if you’re concerned about popularity then [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] is the slightly less popular of the two. And I actually don’t think [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] is going to pinpoint when a girl was born because, like you said, it’s been popular since our great grandparents and great great grandparents. [name_m]Just[/name_m] a few years ago it would’ve been seen as only an old lady name, but now it’s getting a revival and hearing the name [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] you could never tell if she’s 100 years old or 10 years old or 1 year old.
