He likes vs. I like

[name]Hi[/name] berries! I’m hoping you’ll have some inspired ideas for me. I think there’s common ground here somewhere. I prefer older names - the grandma names making a comeback. He tends to be more traditional and swing towards popular. We both agree that we want the name to be immediately recognizable - we’re not looking for something nobody has heard of. I just want something fewer people use!

He likes (the not-awful list):
then it’s all Jessicas and [name]Laurens[/name] and [name]Andreas[/name]

I like (and he rejects):
[name]Eve[/name] (I got a maybe on this one)
So many more I can’t even think of…

Our son’s name is [name]Charlie[/name], so [name]Lucy[/name] is out! I have thought about looking at the top girl names from the 20s-30s when [name]Charles[/name] was at its peak, but I haven’t been inspired yet. I’m hoping somebody will have some great new suggestions for us. Our probable boy name ([name]Henry[/name]) isn’t super creative, but I don’t think we’ll find something we mutually like better.

[name]Alexandra[/name]-not really
[name]Isabella[/name]-its my name, so i encourage you to name her that, but no i dont like it much
[name]Sabrina[/name]-not really
[name]Sydney[/name]-not really
[name]Eve[/name]-not really
[name]Claire[/name]/[name]Clara[/name]-I like [name]Claire[/name] at least
[name]Alice[/name]-not really
[name]Lucy[/name]-not really
[name]Iris[/name]-im going to say no

Your welcome,

Compromise? [name]How[/name] about:

  • [name]Natalie[/name] [name]Claire[/name]
  • [name]Sabrina[/name] [name]Alice[/name]
  • [name]Eve[/name] [name]Alexandra[/name]

You both have a pretty good taste in names! I would hate for you guys to argue over names… If you don’t like any combinations like these, why don’t you do something like both of you guys can rate all of your names with stars (1-5 stars). [name]Rule[/name] out any name with less than three stars. Have other family members (or you two further discuss your new options) give their opinions on the names. If this doesn’t work…drag your husband to the computer and look at more names until you find one you like.

[name]Julia[/name]? Everyone likes [name]Julia[/name]!

[name]Natalie[/name]- [name]Julia[/name], [name]Anna[/name], [name]Evelyn[/name]
[name]Alexandra[/name]- [name]Alina[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Isabella[/name]- [name]Annabel[/name], [name]Mirabelle[/name], [name]Isla[/name].
[name]Sabrina[/name]- [name]Talia[/name], [name]Fiona[/name], [name]Elena[/name]
[name]Sydney[/name]- [name]Cecily[/name], [name]Sophie[/name], [name]Susannah[/name]
[name]Olivia[/name]- [name]Livia[/name], [name]Lydia[/name], [name]Natalia[/name]

I like (and he rejects):
[name]Eve[/name] - [name]Evelyn[/name], [name]Eva[/name], [name]Genevieve[/name].
[name]Claire[/name]/[name]Clara[/name]- [name]Caroline[/name], [name]Kate[/name], [name]Georgia[/name].
[name]Cora[/name]- [name]Nora[/name], [name]Jane[/name], [name]Ivy[/name].
[name]Alice[/name]- [name]Rose[/name], [name]Adele[/name], [name]Eloise[/name]
[name]Violet[/name]- [name]Camille[/name], [name]Colette[/name], [name]Vivian[/name].
[name]Lucy[/name]- [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Ada[/name], [name]Nola[/name].
[name]Stella[/name]- [name]Lila[/name], [name]Eliza[/name], [name]Della[/name].
[name]Iris[/name]- [name]Lilian[/name], [name]Laurel[/name], [name]Miriam[/name].

Of his names I like [name]Natalie[/name], [name]Alexandra[/name], and even [name]Sabrina[/name]. I like everything on yours other than [name]Cora[/name].

He likes (the not-awful list):
[name]Natalie[/name] - Not a horrible name, and not as popular as [name]Emily[/name] etc. What about [name]Natalia[/name]?
[name]Alexandra[/name] - I like this name over the more popular [name]Alexis[/name] etc.
[name]Isabella[/name] - I wouldn’t go there, so popular.
[name]Sabrina[/name] - I think that this name ages well. Sabry is a cute nn for when they are little.
[name]Sydney[/name] - I am so sick of this name, for like three years every little girl born around me had [name]Sydney[/name] as the first or middle name.
[name]Olivia[/name] - I still really like this name. What about [name]Amelia[/name]? and older feeling but has the nice ‘ia’ ending.

I like (and he rejects):
[name]Eve[/name] (I got a maybe on this one) - What about [name]Evelyn[/name]?
[name]Claire[/name]/[name]Clara[/name] - I love [name]Claire[/name], such a nice feminine name.
[name]Cora[/name] - I am not a fan of this name, but probably because there was a bully on my street growing up with the name [name]Cora[/name].
[name]Alice[/name] - I kind of like this name, it is on the cusp of either loving it or putting it to the side totally.
[name]Violet[/name] - I can’t like this name no matter how much I try. Something about it just doesn’t work.
[name]Lucy[/name] - I like this nice classic and simple name. What about [name]Lucille[/name]?
[name]Stella[/name] - I adore this name. try and convince him of this one. [name]Charlie[/name] and [name]Stella[/name] make a cute sib set
[name]Iris[/name] - I think this name still feels too old for my tastes.

Off his I like: [name]Sabrina[/name], [name]Natalie[/name], [name]Olivia[/name]
Off yours I like: Everything except [name]Cora[/name] & [name]Claire[/name] (They are too much with [name]Charlie[/name])

Some suggestions:

[name]Estella[/name]/[name]Estelle[/name] (this was popular in the 20s/30s, and you could call her [name]Stella[/name]
[name]Rosemary[/name] ([name]Rosie[/name] or [name]Romy[/name])

I actually like his list :). I love both [name]Natalie[/name] and [name]Alexandra[/name].

Hey! I just needed to comment on this, because I love a lot of your picks!

With your son [name]Charles[/name]/[name]Charlie[/name] I definitely recommend [name]Alice[/name] for a sister!
I actually have a sister [name]Alice[/name] and a brother [name]Charles[/name] so thats why Im so keen on it. People are always loving their names as a sibset!
Too bad my parents didn’t name me as creatively! :frowning:
Also for your boys choice [name]Henry[/name], my brothers best friend is named [name]Henry[/name], so of course I think they are great together!
(my siblings are in their 20s so don’t worry about them being really popular or anything, though [name]Henry[/name] is moving up!)

Anyways, good luck trying to compromise!

I have cousins- [name]Charlie[/name] ([name]Charles[/name]), [name]Elenore[/name] ([name]Ellie[/name]), and [name]Cora[/name]. So either of those gets my vote! Especially [name]Elenore[/name], or [name]Elinor[/name], or [name]Elanor[/name], or whatever spelling you like best. Or even [name]Elenora[/name].

Wow! I didn’t expect a resurgence in my topic! Thanks for all your suggestions! I don’t have any updates, but I will absolutely be using these lists for major consideration and I’ll keep you posted. Thanks!!

More ideas-

I know this topic is oldish, but I noticed you’re looking for names from the 1920s/1930s when [name]Charles[/name] was at it’s peak. I love the name [name]Charles[/name] and it’s one that I’m constantly searching for sibling names for. [name]Charles[/name] was at it’s peak, according to the SSA Charts in 1880, and one can assume it was even more popular in the mid 1800s since the list only goes back as far as 1880. Some names from the top of the 1880s list:

[name]Minnie[/name] (#5… this would make a great nickname for something like [name]Mina[/name] or Wilhemina)
[name]Alice[/name] (#8)
[name]Martha[/name] (#16)
[name]Nellie[/name] (#18… this could work just as [name]Nell[/name] or as a nickname for [name]Helen[/name]/[name]Helena[/name])
[name]Mabel[/name] (#22)
[name]Hattie[/name] (#27… I think this works on its own, but [name]Harriet[/name] is the obvious full name choice)
[name]Rose[/name] (#30)
[name]Lula[/name] (#39… works as a full name or as a nn for [name]Louisa[/name], [name]Lucille[/name] and [name]Tallulah[/name])
[name]Pearl[/name] (#47)
[name]Dora[/name] (#51)

[name]Charles[/name]'s second rise (rise is relative since it was always in the top ten until 1954) was between 1918-1929. The middle of those is 1923, so I took a lot at that list. Some possibilities from that list:

[name]Betty[/name] (#5… works best as a nn for [name]Elizabeth[/name])
[name]Ruth[/name] (#6)
[name]Virginia[/name] (#7)
[name]Frances[/name] (#10)
[name]Marjorie[/name] (#16)
[name]Lillian[/name] (#20)
[name]Ruby[/name] (#25)
[name]Hazel[/name] (#40)
[name]Gloria[/name] (#48)

[name]Hope[/name] that helps!

It very much does help, thank you!!

My name is [name]Tessa[/name] and my brother is [name]Charlie[/name], and I think they sound very good together, but I may be biased. I have been told a few times that [name]Tess[/name]/[name]Tessie[/name] sounds like a 1920’s name.
I also love [name]Lydia[/name] with [name]Charlie[/name], they just seem to fit together well.
