Well, I never thought I’d be in this position…I don’t know if it’s cold feet or what, but here goes.
I guess my husband has been test driving our two names at work and he gave me feedback. He’s a teacher, so I value their opinion since they are around kids all day.
My number one pick is [name]Serena[/name]. He says that is not going over well, but I love it.
Our other pick (hubs #1) is an honoring name of both of my grandma’s (fn & mn). This name is going over HUGE with everyone, surprisingly well bc it hasn’t tested well on nameberry when I’ve posted in the past. My friends/his coworkers are saying this name is a gift, and it’s beautiful and unique. My cup runneth over, truly. I really love this name too.
Haesley [name]Jane[/name] (prn Hazely or Haisley, rhymes with paisley). So, I’ve been leaning towards Haesley lately with this spelling. Well, my dad asked that I spell grandma’s name correctly, which turns out is Haessly. Hubs and I are not cool with this spelling at all. We think she’s in for a lot of butchering. We want to change it to Haisley.
So Berries, what do you think of changing the family name to a spelling that looks better and should be easier to pronounce?
And, what are your thoughts of the names? I’m putting in few more names that we both like as well since I’m getting down to the wire. The other names all have mn [name]Genevieve[/name], after me.
[name]Serena[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] - I love this, though I love [name]Selena[/name] that little bit more.
Haisley [name]Jane[/name] (Haessly [name]Jane[/name]) - While we’re respelling, I like the look of Hazely. It looks less attached to the [name]Hailey[/name]/[name]Bailey[/name]/[name]Paisley[/name] trend names. Admittedly I just really like [name]Hazel[/name], that’s my bias. But it feels more classic and is easy to buy as a grandmother’s name, if that makes sense.
[name]Cora[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] - Pretty.
[name]Vivian[/name]/[name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] - That’s a lot of v’s. I like each name individually, I genuinely like both very much - but [name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name]? Not on one girl, sorry, I don’t think it flows that well.
What about keeping the Haessly spelling but moving it to the middle? [name]Vivienne[/name] Haessly? [name]Cora[/name] Haessly?
While I appreciate the family connection to Haisley/Haisley/Haessly, I must caution you that it has two really trendy sounds that are popular right now (ay and ee). These types of names are overused that they have lost all of their charm for me (eg. [name]Ainsley[/name], [name]Paisley[/name], [name]Hailey[/name], [name]Kaleigh[/name], [name]Macy[/name] etc…). Haisley just looks like [name]Paisley[/name] with an “h” and Haisley [name]Jane[/name] is heavy on the “ay” sound. I much prefer your other choices (ranked below). And if you change the spelling, it kind of defeats the purpose, doesn’t it? Have you considered using it in the middle spot (eg. having two middle names)?
I really like [name]Serena[/name]. I think it is very pretty.
While I like the thought and connection with Haisley(or any spelling), it does seem like it would be better as middle as the PP suggested.
My other favorite would be [name]Vivienne[/name] but it does sound a bit much with [name]Genevieve[/name] but I definitely think it useable if you it is your favorite choice.
I’ve never much cared for [name]Cora[/name] but it does sound really good with [name]Genevieve[/name], probably sounds the best out of your options. Good luck!
I think its fine to change the spelling, especially if you know its going to give her grief in the long run.
I love [name]Serena[/name], [name]Cora[/name], [name]Vivienne[/name] and [name]Frances[/name]. They are gorgeous classy names and your name [name]Genevieve[/name] is stunning. I love them all.
No offense to you or your grandmothers but I think the name Haisley/Haessly is awful. Its way to cutesy and made-up looking. My sister has a similar name and she hates it. She hates having such a cutesy “ley” name in her teenage years and having to pronounce it and spell it for everyone.
[name]Serena[/name] is gorgeous and you don’t hear it often at all. Where as [name]Paisley[/name] and all the other “ley” names you hear everywhere, Haisley is not that different. If its really important to everyone that you honor your grandmothers why not consider [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Jane[/name] or [name]Serena[/name] [name]Hazel[/name]? But ultimately go with what you truly love regardless of my or other peoples opinions or you’ll regret it later. Good [name]Luck[/name]!
I love [name]Serena[/name]! And I’m a teacher! I’m not sure what the reaction is. I think this is a name that was mildly more popular in the 1980s, so maybe people are getting a not-quite-with-the times buzz? Or are tired of [name]Serenity[/name]? But if you love it, I would use it, it’s a beautiful name.
Haessly and its variations…I have to admit that I agree with other posters that their positive reaction is about the trendiness of the sounds - how it resembles [name]Paisley[/name] and [name]Hayley[/name] in particular. I like for you how meaningful it is. Was Haessly a surname? It really has that look, googling around says it’s a spelling variation of Haessli, which is a Swiss [name]German[/name] nickname for Haas. Haas in tern means rabbit. So that is cute! But the respellings move further and further away from that meaning. [name]Just[/name] from the sound, I really like the suggestion of [name]Hazel[/name].
[name]Hayley[/name] [name]Serena[/name], while it moves further away, solves a lot of the spelling and prn problems and you still have the S in there.
Ultimately, [name]Serena[/name] [name]Jane[/name], [name]Serena[/name] [name]Hazel[/name], [name]Serena[/name] Haessly, [name]Serena[/name] Haisley, [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Jane[/name], would all get my vote. Haisley [name]Jane[/name] is worth considering if you like it enough, but I wouldn’t pick it just on the positive reaction of others.
I’m of the opposite opinion of most here (so far). I love Haisley Jane. I’ve always been a sucker for Ainsley and it very similar. I’d def. use it, if you like it. Especially since you’re getting such great feedback in real life. Real life people are the ones she’ll be dealing with on a daily basis, not name junkies (like most of us here are).
Depending on your dad’s personality, I’d ask him Why he wants it spelled “correctly”. After a quick Google search it seems to be a rather common last name (with her spelling). And, is definitely not a much used given name. If you wanted something that could possibly be an “easy out” with it, you could explain to him that you love the name and you want to honor your grandmother, but you don’t want your daughter to have a “last name” as a “first name”. That you feel feel more comfortable making it a little more modern kind of first name? Idk, just a path I’d think about trying, to deal with my own family members.
Names don’t have to be an exact copy to honor someone. I’m all for honoring an Anna with Annabel, or a Claire with Clara…or in my case taking a Jane and a Marie and using Janemarie. People honor other’s with exact names, with things that incorporate them, or even by names that are just related in some way. I read on here recently about a couple giving a “bird name” to their child in honor of two different people, who also had bird related names. As long as that person is in your mind as you pick and choose a name, and that name feels connected to them in whatever way, I consider it “in honor” of them.
But, with all that said. Don’t fall into the trap of Not picking a name just because it isn’t getting great feedback. If you love Serena, go for it. It’s a great name. Serena Haisley (or any of your other options as a mn) sounds very nice to me, personally. People LOVE to give feedback good and bad, when they know a name’s just under consideration. Once you “pick” a name, people are much more accepting of it and when they actually meet the child, most of the time, it becomes the “perfect” name for that particular tiny person (if they liked it in the beginning or not). I don’t know how many times I’ve heard something along the lines of: “I Hated the name ______, when I first heard it. But now, that’s the ‘only’ name for [him/her]. It fits them exactly.” A child makes the name, much more than the name makes a child.
I do like the idea of Haisley, although that does look a lot like many of the other trendy -ley names that are spelled in various ways. My favorite from your list is [name]Cora[/name] though.
P.S. A few weeks ago I sent you a PM (that so far has been unread) in which I told you that I liked an idea for a name that you had mentioned awhile back but hesitated on. (If you’re not sure where you go to see the messages it should be near the other controls at the top of the forum when you’re logged in, since some people on here don’t even know about them!)
[name]Every[/name] mother wants her name choice to be well received. Names on namberry take a little gwtting used to by the general public. “Real life” people argoing to oooh and aww over popular names. Theres a reason why those names are popular after all
Haisley is adorable. Especially after such a unique family name. Family names Always win, hands dow (if that is important to you) but if you, love [name]Serena[/name] more, go with that and dont let opinions sway you. No matter what you choose, people will get used to it after a while.
Is [name]Hazel[/name]-[name]Lee[/name] [name]Jane[/name] or [name]Hazel[/name]-[name]Leigh[/name] [name]Jane[/name] an option? I like the sound of it and the family connection. The correct spelling is confusing, and if you’re open to reformatting the name I think that this makes it classic but the connection is still there.
I actually like Haisley. I think it’s cute and I like that it honors family. [name]One[/name] potential problem is that I can’t picture it on say, a doctor or lawyer. Then again, children with other, similar-sounding names will be doctors and lawyers by that time, and so the perception of what constitutes an adult name will have changed. I you and your husband really like it, I would go for it!
Also, I think the Haisley spelling is the best. It still very much honors your family, in my opinion.
I’m not a huge fane of Haesley(however it’s spelled) but I do get the family connection. I think the Haisley spelling makes the most sense. Also, would you consider just [name]Hazel[/name]? It’s a beautiful name that I think still has that connection. Good luck!
I like the family connection of Haesley, but it sounds a lot like the very popular names. But, if it’s what you love. Off of your list I love [name]Cora[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] and [name]Frances[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name]. But again, if Haesley is what you love, go for it. I also second the previous reccomendation of [name]Hazel[/name] or [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Leigh[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] (though that’s a lot of ee sounds).
I really like Haesley, with this spelling. It stands out, not a name most have ever heard of. I don’t think it looks or sounds trendy, it sounds like a surname. For some reason surnames almost always sound professional so it will age well. Plus it’s always nice to have a story behind your name. Spelling it the original way would be confusing and Haisley looks trendy ([name]Paisley[/name] with an H)
Never been a fan of [name]Serena[/name]. It’s always felt dull to me. The other names are nice but pale in comparison too Haesley
