Help! 33 weeks pregnant and no name!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! So…my husband and I have two boys and are expecting our first girl. Our boys are [name_m]Archer[/name_m] (4) and [name_m]Troy[/name_m] (3). We have very different naming styles and can’t agree on a name. I love [name_f]Greta[/name_f] and can’t give it up. He can’t stand it.

He likes [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f], [name_f]Wisteria[/name_f], [name_f]Sofie[/name_f]…etc.

We’ve also toyed with [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], [name_u]Sasha[/name_u], [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], [name_f]Merida[/name_f], [name_f]Bridget[/name_f], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], [name_f]Lana[/name_f], [name_f]Delia[/name_f]…but I can’t commit to any other choice besides [name_f]Greta[/name_f].

I’ve also suggested [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f]…which he can’t stand.

My family loves [name_f]Greta[/name_f], hates [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] (generational…book/movie of a lady with multiple personality disorder from the 70’s) and hates his name picks above.

I want something uncommon but not weird and I prefer shorter names. We currently live in the midwest so worries are that [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] and [name_f]Lana[/name_f] or [name_f]Alana[/name_f] will be pronounced wrong with a harsh long a sound. [name_f]Delia[/name_f] sounds clunky to me. [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] sounds too Shrek/[name_f]Merida[/name_f] sounds too Brave (plus Mer was my late aunt’s nickname). [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] just sounds ditzy and daff. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] and [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] are possibilities, but just don’t seem right. Would [name_f]Greta[/name_f] be too much of a stretch as a nickname for [name_f]Bridget[/name_f]?

Of his picks, I’m okay with maybe using them as a middle name…I feel [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] is too popular and belle is cliche. [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] and [name_f]Wisteria[/name_f] are too out there. [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] is too “mean girl” as well as too popular with the multiple spellings. I also hate letter nicknames like V. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]/[name_f]Sofia[/name_f] is too popular for me. [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] is clunky and I hate [name_f]Gwen[/name_f]. I do like the nickname [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]…[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] will go by [name_u]Jo[/name_u] and I don’t want another boy name for my only girl.

We’ve also considered [name_f]Lelah[/name_f] and [name_f]Vera[/name_f]…(my great grandmothers’ names) and [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] as a possible middle (his grandma’s name). I don’t love them though and none of my other kids have family names.

HELP!!! I’d love any opinions, perspectives and suggestions! Thank you!

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] or [name_f]Winona[/name_f] could be full names for [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], although [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] doesn’t seem like your style. [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] by itself is usable, in my opinion! [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] doesn’t necessarily have to go by [name_u]Jo[/name_u] if you are the one who establishes a nickname. Also, to me there’s no such thing as a nickname that is too much of a stretch! [name_f]Greta[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] is very sweet. Sorry I’m not of more help, hope this at least gives you some ideas!

I think the nickname [name_f]Greta[/name_f] is a little bit of a stretch for [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] but i think it could still work. Nicknames don’t necessarily have any rules, so pick whatever feels right! There is also the [name_f]Bridgette[/name_f] spelling if you haven’t stumbled across that one yet. I had a [name_f]Bridgette[/name_f] in one of my classes and no one seemed to have any problems spelling her name or pronouncing it.

Another suggestion would be to maybe use something like [name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_f]Juliette[/name_f], taking the Gr from the first name and the et from the middle and call her [name_f]Greta[/name_f].

If your husband really dislikes the name [name_f]Greta[/name_f], maybe you can compromise on [name_f]Etta[/name_f] which still has the same sound but a slightly different feeling. [name_f]Etta[/name_f] can be a nickname for names like [name_f]Colette[/name_f], [name_f]Juliette[/name_f], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Bridget[/name_f].

[name_f]Vera[/name_f] and [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] are wonderful middle names! They are both adorable yet stunning! Good luck, i hope you and your husband find the perfect name!

I love the [name_f]Etta[/name_f] idea! [name_f]Greta[/name_f] could be a nn for [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f] or [name_f]Allegra[/name_f] (or even Allegreta if you don’t mind a more unique name), and if you’re worried about [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] being too popular I adore [name_f]Annabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Beth[/name_f] has a somewhat similar sound/feel to [name_f]Greta[/name_f]

Oh no, [name_f]Greta[/name_f] is my current favorite too so this is my nightmare haha. I like the idea of [name_f]Etta[/name_f] or an -ette name with [name_f]Etta[/name_f] as a nickname. I also like [name_f]Winona[/name_f] nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]. Of your current maybes my favorites are [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] and [name_f]Vera[/name_f]. I don’t think [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is too Shrek.

[name_f]Adela[/name_f] nn [name_f]Della[/name_f]
[name_f]Claudia[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f] nn [name_f]Edie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]
[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] nn [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Greer[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f] nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] or maybe [name_f]Netta[/name_f]?
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Inez[/name_f]
[name_f]Leonie[/name_f]/[name_f]Leona[/name_f]
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Nadia[/name_f]
[name_f]Odette[/name_f]
[name_f]Petra[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]

Parsing your different name choices, it seems like you’re attracted to strong, Nordic, two-syllable names for girls, whereas he loves names that are feminine and almost aristocratic sounding. His names seem like they’re either too popular or not streamlined enough for you. With that in mind, here are a few suggestions:

[name_f]Adela[/name_f] - Has the “del” sound from [name_f]Delia[/name_f], but feels a bit more streamlined, and less clunky. It’s not a strange name by any standard, but it also isn’t in the top 1,000. The only problem is whether or not you’re okay with [name_m]Archer[/name_m] and [name_f]Adela[/name_f] sharing initials, but I figured you might be if [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Alana[/name_f] are contenders. [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] also seems like a name your husband might like, but it seems a little too long for your taste.

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] - Has the same Nordic appeal as [name_f]Greta[/name_f] and [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f], and feels strong, but also has the feminine “[name_f]El[/name_f]” at the beginning, which can make a nice nickname and ties into the -el from [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f]. It’s not an odd name, but it’s also fairly uncommon at #622.

[name_f]Eva[/name_f] - [name_f]Eva[/name_f], like [name_f]Greta[/name_f] and [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f], feels strong, traditional, and Nordic (it’s most popular in Iceland), but it has the “v” sound your husband likes in [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] and feels a bit softer and more feminine than [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] and [name_f]Greta[/name_f] do, which might appeal to your husband. [name_m]Archer[/name_m], [name_m]Troy[/name_m], and [name_f]Eva[/name_f] fit together well as a sibset, in my opinion.

[name_f]Delphine[/name_f] - Takes the ‘del’ from [name_f]Delia[/name_f] and the -phine from [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], but it seems to sidestep the issues you had with both names. It’s also [name_m]French[/name_m], like [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] and [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f].

[name_f]Freya[/name_f] - Nordic like [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] and [name_f]Greta[/name_f], and has a similar appeal to [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] (soft name starting with an F) without the connection to Shrek.

[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] - Feels similar to [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f], but softer and more feminine and has the same ending as [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f].

[name_f]Nina[/name_f] - Streamlined, strong, and feminine. I’m always surprised that [name_f]Nina[/name_f] isn’t more popular (it’s at #309 right now).

[name_f]Saskia[/name_f] - Not sure if [name_f]Saskia[/name_f] is too out there for your taste, but it has the grounded, Nordic sound that [name_f]Greta[/name_f] and [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] have and feels like a slightly more impactful form of [name_u]Sasha[/name_u]. At the same time, it has the feminine -ia ending that your husband seems to like ([name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], [name_f]Wisteria[/name_f], etc.) I think [name_m]Archer[/name_m], [name_m]Troy[/name_m], and [name_f]Saskia[/name_f] sound great together.

[name_f]Willa[/name_f] - [name_f]Willa[/name_f] feels strong (maybe because of its association with [name_f]Willa[/name_f] Cather), but soft and pretty.

He likes [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] and you seem to adore [name_f]Greta[/name_f], so what about the classic [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]? He could call her [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] (similar to [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]) and you could call her [name_f]Greta[/name_f]? I know kids who go by different nicknames depending on who’s talking to them, so I don’t think it would be too confusing. [name_m]Just[/name_m] a thought. Good luck!

Seconding [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f]- maybe less clunky than [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f], starting with G so similar to [name_f]Greta[/name_f], and with the nickname [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] that you like?

If he really can’t stand [name_f]Greta[/name_f] as you say then unfortunately I would nix it. Until you do there won’t be room to love any other name, it will always be in the way. His name style isn’t too weird or unworkable. Keep trying. I know someone mentioned [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] already. [name_f]Do[/name_f] either of you like that? It seems like a name that bridges your styles a little bit. Good luck!

Would he like [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f]? I think it would bridge the gap perfectly. [name_f]Gretchen[/name_f] [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] would be adorable

[name_m]How[/name_m] about using [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]? Too bad he will not agree to [name_f]Greta[/name_f]. My husband did the same with my favorite name. We continued looking until we found a name we could [name_m]Bolton[/name_m] agree on. Suggestions:

[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Gretchen[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]

[name_f]Anya[/name_f]
[name_u]Arya[/name_u]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_u]Josie[/name_u]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_f]Leda[/name_f]

I think [name_f]Etta[/name_f] would be a great compromise. I think [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] would be more your husband’s style (romantic, very feminine) and can get you to [name_f]Etta[/name_f] very nicely.

It isn’t [name_f]Greta[/name_f], but it’s close.
