Berries - a little help from your brilliant brains?
Not happy with our choices for boy names right now. I feel like I’ve been a name nerd long enough I should have a list of ideas, but I don’t! What am I missing??

Here are some things we like or don’t like in a name:

  • our last name is sooo long, 13 letters, has an Sh and a double T (like Butterworth, but starting with Sh) so we don’t want a really long first name, though one syllable names don’t sit right with us either, unless they are longer-one syllable names. DS is [name_m]Grant[/name_m], so it’s slightly less brisk than, say, a 4-letter name. I like some one syllable names, like [name_m]Miles[/name_m] because they seem longer (I guess it could just be the fact that it’s more than 4 letters?). We don’t want more than 2 syllables and even a 2 syllable name needs to feel lighter…names like [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] or [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] we’ve rejected because, though one syllable, they seem like a “lot” of name when paired with our last name.
  • though I like some of them, I can’t see us using a longer, classic name with an obvious nickname, as in [name_m]Matthew[/name_m], Partick, [name_m]Zachary[/name_m], [name_m]William[/name_m] - that kind of thing. Neither of our other kids have names with real obvious nicknames.
  • Nothing trendy, made up sounding, or awkward to spell or pronounce. Can be classic-popular, but not top 20 popular (that rules out [name_m]Henry[/name_m] which otherwise would be pretty perfect).
  • siblings are [name_m]Grant[/name_m] [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Hope[/name_f]. Our girl name pick as of now is [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (though dh keeps calling her [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] - ew!)

Hmm… What about:

[name_m]Alec[/name_m]
[name_u]Blaine[/name_u]
[name_u]Blake[/name_u]
[name_m]Brooks[/name_m]
[name_m]Cael[/name_m]
[name_m]Conor[/name_m]
[name_m]Doyle[/name_m]
[name_m]Eli[/name_m]
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m]
[name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_u]Luca[/name_u]
[name_u]Owen[/name_u]
[name_m]Ralph[/name_m]
[name_u]Reese[/name_u]
[name_m]Tripp[/name_m] (cause he’s the third kid?)
[name_m]Vaughn[/name_m]

Was trying to think of “longer” one syllable and “shorter” two syllable names. I’ll keep brainstorming

[name_m]Henry[/name_m] is such a nice choice! Is it really that popular?
[name_m]Waylon[/name_m]
[name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]
[name_m]Clyde[/name_m]

[name_u]Kyle[/name_u]
[name_m]Warren[/name_m]
[name_u]Evan[/name_u]
[name_u]Owen[/name_u] ( 2nd this one)
[name_m]Milo[/name_m]
[name_m]Griffin[/name_m]
[name_m]Ronan[/name_m]
[name_u]Wynn[/name_u]
[name_u]Hudson[/name_u]

[name_m]Grant[/name_m], [name_f]Isla[/name_f], and:

[name_u]Noah[/name_u]
[name_u]Devon[/name_u]
[name_u]Theo[/name_u]
[name_u]Kieran[/name_u]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]
[name_u]Reece[/name_u]
[name_u]Flynn[/name_u]

Repeats: [name_u]Evan[/name_u] and [name_u]Luca[/name_u] came to mind too before I saw the other posts

I second all of these suggestions.

[name_u]Owen[/name_u] is perfect in every way…except its my brother’s name! Bummer.

[name_m]Alec[/name_m] - step-brother’s name :frowning:
[name_u]Blaine[/name_u] - eh
[name_u]Blake[/name_u] - like but dh doesn’t
[name_m]Brooks[/name_m] - too preppy (brooks brothers…)
[name_m]Cael[/name_m] - too cabbagey
[name_m]Conor[/name_m]: eh…
[name_m]Doyle[/name_m]: maybe…I’ll think on that one.
[name_m]Eli[/name_m]: Actually like quite a lot - are people using it on it’s own these days? I’ve never been fond of [name_u]Elias[/name_u] but love [name_m]Eli[/name_m]
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m] - perhaps, I do sort of like this name. [name_m]Will[/name_m] add to list.
[name_u]James[/name_u]: is great, a family name, but my nephew is already [name_u]James[/name_u] so we don’t want to copy them.
[name_u]Luca[/name_u]: I’ve always liked this name but it doesn’t feel right for us for some reason.
[name_u]Owen[/name_u]: my brother’s name (boo because it would be perfect!)
[name_m]Ralph[/name_m] - nope
[name_u]Reese[/name_u]: I feel this is a better girl’s name.
[name_m]Tripp[/name_m]: too [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_u]Palin[/name_u]-y, also we had a dog named this once, lol!
[name_m]Vaughn[/name_m] - nah.

so looks like we have [name_m]Doyle[/name_m], [name_m]Eli[/name_m] and [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] to consider from this list. Thanks!

[name_m]Henry[/name_m] is #11 in [name_m]Vermont[/name_m] - I know at least 2 [name_m]Henry[/name_m]'s in my town that are 1-2 years old (and it’s a small town!)
[name_m]Waylon[/name_m]: too country ([name_m]Waylon[/name_m] [name_m]Jennings[/name_m])
[name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]: this is a cool name but I feel like is getting pretty trendy? Oops, yep, just checked and it’s #10 in [name_m]Vermont[/name_m] last year.
[name_m]Clyde[/name_m]: I actually rather like this, haven’t mentioned it to dh yet…afraid he’d think of Clydesdale or something, but I’ll mention it:)

[name_m]Warren[/name_m]: not feeling it
[name_u]Evan[/name_u]: I like this but it’s pretty common around here, it seems I meet an [name_u]Evan[/name_u] every other day
[name_u]Owen[/name_u]: my bro’s name
[name_m]Milo[/name_m]: I love this and was pushing for [name_m]Miles[/name_m] for I could use as a nickname. DH firmly vetoed.
[name_m]Griffin[/name_m]: hmmm…it’s a cool name. I’ve only known one Griffan. [name_m]Will[/name_m] think on it.
[name_m]Ronan[/name_m]: I like this and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] but dh doesn’t.
[name_u]Wynn[/name_u]: feels too feminine
[name_u]Hudson[/name_u]: it’s cute…hmm…maybe but feels a little preppy? [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t get me wrong, I do like preppy, but not pretentious. I’ll consider this one a while.

Thanks!

[name_u]Noah[/name_u]: too popular
[name_u]Devon[/name_u]: I kind of like this, added to list.
[name_u]Theo[/name_u]: too nicknamey
[name_u]Kieran[/name_u]: eh, nms
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]: dh doesn’t like
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]: mayyybe…
[name_u]Reece[/name_u]: too feminine
[name_u]Flynn[/name_u]: feels like a twist on [name_u]Finn[/name_u] which is overdone [name_f]IMO[/name_f]

thanks!

just looked up [name_m]Wesley[/name_m], means “dweller near the western wood or clearing.”
I like that! Definitely one to consider! [name_m]Wes[/name_m] Butterworth would be a cool name too.

and [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] means laughter/he will laugh, which is pretty awesome!
