My first child (a girl!) will be born in [name_f]May[/name_f], and I’d like to get some outside help …
My grandmother is named [name_f]Alice[/name_f], and her nickname since she was a child was always [name_f]Luci[/name_f] (prounounced “Lut-zi” in her native Hungarian).
I am considering naming my daughter after her … and I love both the name [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it’s too much of a stretch to name her [name_f]Alice[/name_f] but call her [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]? [name_m]Will[/name_m] people outside of my family find a connection between those two names or just think it’s strange? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] can be a nickname for [name_f]Alice[/name_f]?
I wouldn’t say [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is a conventional nickname for [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. But since it has family meaning it can work. Maybe you could consider the first and middle name combos [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. I think sounds adorable! Maybe it could work as a double barrel first too?
I think is definitely usable! You can’t force a person to use a particular nickname of course, but I think it’s not too far. I’d begin by calling her Lissy, and then switch to [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].
If I met a girl named [name_f]Alice[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], I’d be a bit surprised, but then I’d shrug and say “Oh, Ok. It’s actually adorable.”
I don’t think it works. There’s nothing in [name_f]Alice[/name_f] that can make [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. Maybe just name her [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]? It’s a perfectly acceptable name. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is really great too. Or there are tons of names that can have [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] as a nickname and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] could still be a middle. [name_f]Lucasta[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f], etc. Would you like other suggestions?
I think it works for you because you have a family connection/reasoning. Be prepared for some people to be confused and not “get” the connection between [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], though.
I think it’s way too much of a stretch. I would do what others suggested and use one as a middle name. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] are both adorable combinations. This way you could call her either name and get away with it.
Sorry, but I think you have to choose which you would like best. Or you could name her [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] or [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]!
Eh. I think anything works for a nickname, and I like that it’s a family thing. Honestly, if I met an [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and she said to call her [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], I’d do so but think it was a bit weird.
I do think it’s a stretch. I like both [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and the family connection is very sweet. Like others have suggested, maybe pick one name or use both [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] or [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].
As a [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] whose legal first name is in no way related to the name [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], I think it’s doable. You’ll get asked about it, and she’ll have to explain it but to be honest, it’s not that annoying. The only thing is, are you naming her [name_f]Alice[/name_f] but never intend to actually use [name_f]Alice[/name_f] as her name? If that’s the case, I’d probably just go with [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and cut out the middle man. If [name_f]Luci[/name_f] is what your grandmother identified with, then I think [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]/ [name_f]Luci[/name_f] works even better to honour her than [name_f]Alice[/name_f] would.
If you are attached to both names and want to use both, I would go with [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] or [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] (I think [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] flows better, though). We sometimes call our daughter [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] because her middle name is [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], so I think if you use it even as a middle name it would still be an option for her to go by. Alternately, if you’re planning on having more than one child, you could always save one or the other for the next girl.
I’m all for whatever nicknames you’d like…but yes, she will have to explain it over and over. I still like it, and don’t think it’s TOO much of a stretch unlike most PPs.
I do, however, like the suggestion of [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. Adorable!
Another vote for including [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] in the name. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] or [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] both sound nice.
Maybe it’s an American thing (I’m not American), but I don’t understand the ‘I want to call her [name_f]Florence[/name_f] but nickname her [name_u]Darcy[/name_u]’ thing on Nameberry. I would think it extremely odd to name a baby [name_f]Alice[/name_f] knowing you were going to call her [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] her whole life.
I read a book where [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] were sisters.
I say people will be confused but then there people dumb enough to be confused when someone wants to be [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and her name is [name_f]Katherine[/name_f].
I agree with other posters, it doesn’t make sense to me.
I agree you could use them together. I would put [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] first, if that’s what you will call her. I also think either could be saved for another daughter.
Good luck!
