We are expecting our third child in the spring and need a little help with naming our daughter!
We like classic, timeless names that have an [name_f]English[/name_f] feel—I live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f], although originally from [name_f]England[/name_f]. We also very much want to avoid top 20, ideally top 50, names. I’m very happy to use something that is very popular in [name_f]England[/name_f], as long as it is less so in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] (For example, I absolutely adore [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], but it is out due to massive popularity in its different forms here, while [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] seems less popular here although there are dozens of them back home). We have narrowed it down to our top 6:
Thank you! I am leaning slightly towards Alice too. My concern is that it is in the top 50, and has been even higher in past years. Do you feel it’s very popular?
I love the Arabella option, but I’m also concerned that it’s becoming increasingly trendy! And of course, we’d be adding another Bella into the sea of existing ones.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] does feel like a completely perfect fit with [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] and [name_m]Charles[/name_m]! [name_f]Regal[/name_f] but sweet and fresh. It doesn’t feel very popular to me (I’m UK based, so not sure about [name_f]Canada[/name_f]) – for me, it’s such a classic that it can’t really feel overdone. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland is a sweet [name_f]English[/name_f] connection for you too.
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f] feels a little frilly beside your other children’s smart, streamlined names to me, but I like all of your other choices. [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] is a wonderful classic that seems to continue to fly just under the radar – always in use, but never too popular, and never particularly in or out of style. That would be a very close second favourite for you.
Best of luck!
Editing to suggest Annabel, which might bridge your love of Isobel and Arabella, with a British flair?
I love [name_f]Alice[/name_f] with [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] and [name_m]Charles[/name_m]. In fact [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is a great combo that gels with [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] (shorter syllable first, longer middle name pattern).
With regards to popularity- I think [name_f]Alice[/name_f] will always be in the top 50 but never wildly popular. [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] both seem to be quite trendy right now and rapidly moving up the charts whereas [name_f]Alice[/name_f] seems more classic. Never out of use but never overdone.
I think my favorites are [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], and [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]. If you want a name that’s ending sound is different than your daughter, [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], I would go with [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] or [name_f]Alice[/name_f] because Matlida, [name_f]Arabella[/name_f], and [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] all have that -a sound at the end. All super cute names though!
solely based on what sounds best with [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] and [name_m]Charles[/name_m], I have to eliminate Genevieve and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] just seems to complicated next to the beautiful simpleness of [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] doesn’t give off the same vibe. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorites are:
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f], [name_m]Charles[/name_m], and [name_f]Alice[/name_f].
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f], [name_m]Charles[/name_m], and [name_f]Lydia[/name_f].
I love [name_f]Alice[/name_f] for you. It’s such a sweet, but at the same time, grounded, strong name. I’m in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and I know just one [name_f]Alice[/name_f] so I think it hits the sweet spot of being well known but not overly common.
My favourite with your children’s names is [name_f]Alice[/name_f] she’s similar in length to [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] & [name_m]Charles[/name_m] and stylistically works brilliantly with both names. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] doesn’t feel popular but I’m in the U.K. it’s a pretty name and works. Great choice!
Alice seems like a perfect match for your kiddos’ names, and I love it on its own too. It’s sweet, strong, and classic, and works beautifully sound-wise your sibset. That would be my first pick for you for sure! [name_f]My[/name_f] second choice would be [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] “[name_f]Millie[/name_f]”–I adore [name_f]Millie[/name_f] and think it fits in nicely with your set (although just [name_f]Millie[/name_f] might be my pick!). [name_f]My[/name_f] third choice for you would be [name_f]Lydia[/name_f]. [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] and [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] both seem a little frilly to me next to your older kiddos’ names, although they’re lovely too–so really, you can’t go wrong here! [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] would get my vote as a combo if you don’t have a middle picked out!
My vote goes to [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. It’s one of my absolute favourite names; I would have used it for my daughter if it wasn’t so popular here (Australia). I also adore [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] but understand your hesitation. [name_f]My[/name_f] second choice from your list is [name_f]Alice[/name_f], and I do agree with others who say that [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is perfect with [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] and [name_m]Charles[/name_m] - and that [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] would make a beautiful combination!
Alice and [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] are perfect with your family. [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] would also work well, and is a known but not often used name. [name_f]My[/name_f] favourite on your list is actually [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] though! I like [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] very much too.
I find [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] too over-the-top.
I would narrow the list to [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Annabel[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f].
