Help edit my sweet vintage girls list!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] berries,

We have sooo many boys’ names and combos we’re in love with thanks to your lovely feedback and help. Now I’m looking to narrow down and refresh our girls’ list to find ones we feel the same way about.

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - This is DH favourite and it’s a vintage name I love, but doesn’t make me swoon except for with our combo [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f].

[name_f]Birdie[/name_f] - this has been my top fave for a long time and has a special meaning to me as well the initial B. It’s a little too out there for DH I think, but he doesn’t hate it either.

[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] - This is an honour name we’ve seriously been considering as a first and love with nn [name_f]Dot[/name_f]/[name_f]Dottie[/name_f] or [name_f]Ro[/name_f]. I love the [name_m]Wizard[/name_m] of [name_m]Oz[/name_m] so that’s a plus, but feel a bit self-conscious it would be seen as too dusty of a choice. I like the combo [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_u]Wilde[/name_u].

[name_f]Goldie[/name_f] - Another one that may be a bit out there for DH but hasn’t completely said no, especially if it’s a nickname for something else but I prefer it on our own. Only thing is, we’re both brunettes so would it be weird if our child wasn’t blonde with this name?

[name_u]Lou[/name_u]/[name_f]Lulu[/name_f] - We really like this nickname but don’t have a long-form we love and uncertain about using it on its own. [name_f]Lucie[/name_f] feels a bit too plain for me and other [name_f]Lu[/name_f]- names too southern.

[name_u]Rue[/name_u] - We both love this as a nickname or stand-alone, and I like how it features the start of my surname. R is another special initial. However, I have a niece named [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and [name_u]French[/name_u]-Canadian relatives who would be confused about why we named our daughter street lol.

[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] - This is DH’s other favourite and one of the few we both agree on, although there’s something that doesn’t feel 100% right to me about it. I also don’t want her to be confused for [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f].

For middles, we’d like to use [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] or [name_u]Jean[/name_u] as honour names or a quirky middle like [name_f]Moon[/name_f] or [name_u]Wilde[/name_u]. We have a longer last name (3 syllables), so prefer a shorter first.

[name_f]My[/name_f] other faves given the thumbs down are [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], [name_u]Story[/name_u], [name_u]Poet[/name_u] and more unisex [name_u]Scout[/name_u] and [name_u]Max[/name_u] (I love M name alliteration with our last name).

Which is your #1 name or combo? Which would you remove? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any other suggestions or feedback?

I love every single name on this list! From least to most favorite, I’d say: [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_u]Lou[/name_u], [name_u]Rue[/name_u], [name_f]Goldie[/name_f], and [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]. [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] would be so freaking cool!

I like [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]! I like [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] as a combo. Would you consider [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_u]Max[/name_u]? [name_u]Max[/name_u] is adorable for a little girl!

I love your list! Hard to choose a favorite, but I have to go with [name_u]Lou[/name_u]. I do think [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] on its own would be too juvenile, but [name_u]Lou[/name_u] certainly isn’t. I’m sure you’ve heard all of these “[name_f]Lu[/name_f]” names, but I’ll list them anyway:
[name_f]Lula[/name_f] (Maybe [name_f]Lula[/name_f]-[name_u]Jean[/name_u])

I don’t think [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] or [name_u]Louise[/name_u] sound southern. I understand that [name_f]Lula[/name_f], [name_f]Luella[/name_f], and [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] might, but I think they’re adorable. [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] is Italian, and not southern at all. [name_u]Lou[/name_u] by itself is gorgeous too.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite names from your list are in this order: 1.) [name_u]Lou[/name_u] 2.) [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] 3.) [name_f]Alice[/name_f] 4.) [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] 5.) [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] 6.) [name_u]Rue[/name_u] 7.) [name_f]Birdie[/name_f].

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] is gorgeous, and I do love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] and [name_u]Story[/name_u]!

I think [name_f]Moon[/name_f], [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], and [name_u]Jean[/name_u] work with every name on your list, but I am partial to [name_f]Moon[/name_f]!

Perhaps you would consider [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] as an alternative to [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]? It feels fresher and less dated to me.

[name_f]Goldie[/name_f] would absolutely work for a brunette! [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite long form is [name_f]Marigold[/name_f].

[name_f]Lucille[/name_f] as a full form of [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]? That would be really cute and [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] feels very elegant to me!

[name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] or [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] are other options to get the nn [name_u]Rue[/name_u]!

I love all of your names! [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is probably my favorite!

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite is [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], with [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_u]Wilde[/name_u] for combo. [name_f]My[/name_f] second choice would be [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f].

I think if I was forced to ditch one, it’d have to be [name_u]Lou[/name_u]/[name_f]Lulu[/name_f] as I do find it quite unsubstantial on its own.

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - a classic, pretty name. It’s not my favorite, as it just seems slightly plain. I do, however, really love [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f].
[name_f]Birdie[/name_f] - I looove [name_f]Birdie[/name_f]! I think it’s so sweet and spunky. Perhaps the name [name_f]Bridget[/name_f], [name_f]Brigid[/name_f], [name_f]Alberta[/name_f], or another bird name you love with the nn [name_f]Birdie[/name_f]? (I prefer it as a full name, but might help your husband feel better about it!)
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] - this is my aunts name, so it seems a little dated to me. I think [name_f]Dot[/name_f] and [name_f]Ro[/name_f] are cute though, and freshen it up a bit. [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_u]Wilde[/name_u] is very cool.
[name_f]Goldie[/name_f] - another one I love! [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] is so adorable. I definitely think it could work on someone of any appearance! [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite full name is [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], but I also think a name meaning gold could work (like [name_f]Cressida[/name_f] or [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]). I prefer [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] on its own, though!
[name_u]Lou[/name_u]/[name_f]Lulu[/name_f] - [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] is so sweet. I grew up loving a movie where one of the characters was just “[name_f]Lulu[/name_f]” and I thought it was so cute. I definitely think it could work as a full name if you love it enough. Maybe [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_f]Talullah[/name_f], [name_f]Luella[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], or [name_f]Elouise[/name_f]?
[name_u]Rue[/name_u] - I love [name_u]Rue[/name_u] so much. It’s unfortunate your niece is named [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], as I feel it’s too close.
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] - [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is light, sweet, and very pretty. I love the nature association! I think it might get confused with [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] sometimes, but it’s an easy fix (and I love [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] more than [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]!)

I also really love [name_u]Scout[/name_u], [name_u]Max[/name_u], and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]!

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorites are [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], [name_f]Goldie[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], and [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]. Your whole list is great though, you can’t go wrong!!

This is such a fun list! I especially love [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], plus [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], [name_f]Goldie[/name_f], and [name_u]Lou[/name_u]/[name_f]Lulu[/name_f] as nicknames. Maybe [name_f]Lilou[/name_f], [name_f]Malou[/name_f], or [name_f]Lumi[/name_f] to get to [name_u]Lou[/name_u]/[name_f]Lulu[/name_f]?

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Lua[/name_f], [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f], [name_f]Luella[/name_f], [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] or [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] as formal names for [name_u]Lou[/name_u]? I don’t think these are Southern sounding at all. [name_u]Lou[/name_u] is gorgeous but I do understand your hesitation about using it on its own. Same with [name_u]Rue[/name_u] - I love it but it seems like a nickname, and the meaning in [name_f]English[/name_f] and it being ‘street’ in [name_u]French[/name_u] really isn’t ideal. [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] and [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] aren’t my style although I do love [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]… I also love [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] and don’t think you have to worry about people calling her [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]. It may happen occasionally but it is easily corrected. I think my vote goes either to [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_u]Wilde[/name_u] (if that’s an option?) or [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f]. They’re both lovely combinations and both [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] are such timeless, elegant, whimsical names. Although if you liked [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] or [name_f]Luella[/name_f] or [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], those would be strong contenders.

[name_f]My[/name_f] absolute favourites from your list would be [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]! I think [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] works just fine on it’s own tbh.

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] is a gorgeous combo but if [name_f]Alice[/name_f] itself isnt making you swoon, I’d cut it.

[name_f]Birdie[/name_f] - cute and quirky. [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] is grounded ans valanced

[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] - [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_u]Wilde[/name_u] feels fresh and inspired and i like how meaningful this is for you

[name_f]Goldie[/name_f] - not my favourite. A bit descriptive

[name_u]Lou[/name_u]/[name_f]Lulu[/name_f] - i think it’s substanial eniugh to stand alone, especially as [name_u]Lou[/name_u] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]!

[name_u]Rue[/name_u] - I like it’s meaningfulness but if she has a cousin calles [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] and if it would confuse relatives I’d maybe lose this one

[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] - [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is sweet and sleek. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] would be gorgeous

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

Here are my thoughts on your list:

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - This is a great name. It’s solid, feminine w/out being frilly, classic, smart & sweet. There are two things that I don’t like about it. 1. It’s getting really popular in my area. I hear it all of the time on babies. 2. The most natural nns are [name_u]Allie[/name_u] & Lissy, which are meh in my opinion.

[name_f]Birdie[/name_f] -I think it’s really sweet, & if you love it go for it. For me though, it’s a bit too nick-namey on its own. [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] or [name_f]Bernadette[/name_f] nn [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] would be cute.

[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] - It’s not dusty! [name_u]Dusty[/name_u] names are the new fad anyway. This one is darling. It’s well known & would seem normal, but it’s not over done & I don’t for see it climbing the charts too high.

[name_f]Goldie[/name_f] -I think [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] on a brunette kid is fine. It may actually be less cheesy that way. I prefer this as a nn too. [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] nn [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] is darling. [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] on its own is a bit lacking substance.

[name_u]Lou[/name_u]/[name_f]Lulu[/name_f] - Oh, there are so many great ‘[name_f]Lulu[/name_f]’ names! [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], [name_f]Eloisa[/name_f], [name_f]Laurel[/name_f], [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f], [name_f]Laura[/name_f], [name_u]Louise[/name_u], [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], [name_f]Luisa[/name_f], [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f], [name_f]Luciana[/name_f], [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], [name_f]Tallula[/name_f]? Like any of those?

[name_u]Rue[/name_u] - This may be close to [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] if you see her often. It’s also a bit nick-namey to me. I’m not sure what else works besides [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] though.

[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] - I’m really picking about nns apparently, because I prefer this one as a nn too. It is a well known stand alone name though. I don’t think she’ll be mistaken for [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]. But if you really dislike [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], that may be something to consider. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is really sweet & lovable.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite is [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] if you can think of a full name for it, but other than that [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f].

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] would be a really cute combo. I know several people who go by [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] online and I kinda like it. I think it would be a little weird to have a not-blonde child with the name [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] but it’s not too out there. [name_u]Rue[/name_u] is probably my personal favorite out of this list, I’d probably combo [name_u]Rue[/name_u] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]–plus it has the same kind of ending as [name_u]Lou[/name_u]/[name_f]Lulu[/name_f] but you like it as a standalone. If you wanted to make it a nickname I know a person whose full name is [name_f]Rachel[/name_f] that has the nickname [name_u]Rue[/name_u].

Good luck finding a name!

What a fantastic list!
I have a fondness for [name_f]Alice[/name_f], it’s timeless but not boring, especially with your quirky middles (I might prefer [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_u]Wilde[/name_u] to [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f]).

I like the suggestion of [name_f]Bridgette[/name_f] or [name_f]Brigid[/name_f] for “[name_f]Birdie[/name_f]”

[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is a personal fave, and LuLu is a natural nickname. [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] Is lovely, or [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_u]Wilde[/name_u].

For [name_u]Rue[/name_u], what about full name “[name_f]Ramona[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]” (so pretty!).

Good luck!

[name_f]My[/name_f] faves are: [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_u]Rue[/name_u], and [name_f]Birdie[/name_f].

If it’s too out there for your DH as a full name what about “[name_f]Birdie[/name_f]” short for [name_f]Brigid[/name_f] or [name_f]Bridget[/name_f]? For '[name_u]Lou[/name_u]" there’s also [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], [name_f]Eluned[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_u]Louise[/name_u]/[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] if you want a full name. I do think [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] works better as a nickname- what about [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]? I also like [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]- I think that freshens up [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] a bit! I do love [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_u]Wilde[/name_u] though.

Some Combo ideas:
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] “[name_u]Lou[/name_u]”
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] [name_u]Rue[/name_u]
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u]
[name_f]Brigid[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] “[name_f]Birdie[/name_f]”
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_u]Wilde[/name_u] “[name_u]Lou[/name_u]”
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_u]Wilder[/name_u] “[name_f]Goldie[/name_f]”
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_u]Louise[/name_u]

my taste gears toward [name_u]Rue[/name_u], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], and [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], but I am with you on [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]. the cutest nickname potential, and [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_u]Wilde[/name_u] is swoon!!

Have you considered [name_u]Louise[/name_u], [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], or [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]? They each allow for those nicknames and lend a vintage feel.

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] for me personally has lost it’s “vintage” feel. And on [name_u]Rue[/name_u], it has heavy connections to the Hunger Games character [name_u]Rue[/name_u] if that’s something you want to avoid. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite from your list is [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] because it is uncommon, immediately feels vintage and charming, but it isn’t outrageous. I think maybe [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] [name_u]Wilde[/name_u] could be adventurous and quirky. Best of luck!

I really love your style, @nicoleamanda! :two_hearts:

Here are my thoughts on each of your names:

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] – I’m with you on this one. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is sweet, pretty, substantial, classic… but it doesn’t set my world on fire. I do love the unexpectedness of the combo [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] though, just stunning.

[name_f]Birdie[/name_f] – [name_u]Love[/name_u] this! Very cute and feisty. It’s becoming the celebrity baby name du jour, though, which might put me off a little. But it’s definitely quirky enough that I can’t see it becoming super mainstream any time soon. You’ve had [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] as a combo before I think, which I love – perfect balance of quirky and timeless traditional.

[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] – This is definitely growing on me. I really like the nickname potential and I actually don’t think it feels too dusty at this point. It feels similar to [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Mae[/name_f], etc. to me and those feel perfectly fine and usable now. Really, really love [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_u]Wilde[/name_u] as a combo! Again, the balance of old and new, soft and hard, is perfect.

[name_f]Goldie[/name_f] – Also growing on me, though I prefer it as a nickname for [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]. This is really really niche, but this is my first association (that’s fading now I’m seeing it more, though!) I do like how feisty this feels, but I still prefer [name_f]Birdie[/name_f].

[name_u]Lou[/name_u]/[name_f]Lulu[/name_f] – Not a fan of [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] as a standalone, it feels too juvenile to me, but I think [name_u]Lou[/name_u] works. What about [name_f]Lula[/name_f] (funky retro), [name_u]Louise[/name_u] (underused vintage), [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] or [name_f]Lumi[/name_f] (quirky and fun) or [name_f]Lilou[/name_f]/[name_f]Malou[/name_f] (for your [name_u]French[/name_u] connection)? I do tend to prefer [name_u]Lou[/name_u] as a nickname.

[name_u]Rue[/name_u] – I LOVE this as a standalone or nickname, but we ruled it out on account of our [name_u]French[/name_u] relatives too  There’s also [name_u]Roux[/name_u], but same issue only with sauce (and the masculine ending). It doesn’t sound like it’s the one for you, unfortunately.

[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] – I totally love this! I don’t know what the situation is in [name_f]Canada[/name_f], but in [name_f]France[/name_f] this is extremely dated to the 1960s, which ultimately put us off because our [name_u]French[/name_u] relatives are very close family members. You might be able to get away with it, though. It is such a sweet, chic and happy sounding name! [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f].

[name_f]My[/name_f] top 3 combos for you would be:

  1. [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]
  2. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]
  3. [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_u]Wilde[/name_u]

But if you were open to any of those longer forms for [name_u]Lou[/name_u]/[name_f]Lulu[/name_f], I think they would work well too. [name_f]Lula[/name_f], [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilou[/name_f] seem to fit especially.

[name_u]Alix[/name_u] (old [name_u]French[/name_u] form of [name_f]Alice[/name_f], but does it just look like a misspelled [name_u]Alex[/name_u]?)
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] ([name_f]Birdie[/name_f] or [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] for short)
[name_u]Romy[/name_u] or maybe [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] ([name_f]Ro[/name_f], [name_u]Rue[/name_u] or [name_u]Romy[/name_u] for short)
[name_f]Vita[/name_f] (could also honour your [name_f]Victoria[/name_f])
[name_u]Sol[/name_u] (love this for a girl)
[name_f]Anais[/name_f] (could win your husband over with its similarity to [name_f]Alice[/name_f])
[name_u]Caro[/name_u]
[name_f]Minna[/name_f] or [name_f]Minta[/name_f] ([name_f]Minnie[/name_f] M******ie, so sweet!)
[name_u]Fable[/name_u] ([name_f]Faye[/name_f] for short)
[name_f]Maple[/name_f] ([name_f]Mae[/name_f])
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] ([name_f]Irie[/name_f])
[name_f]Saffron[/name_f] (Saffy)
[name_u]Jude[/name_u] (love for a girl)
[name_f]Plum[/name_f] (could also be a nod to [name_f]Victoria[/name_f])

[name_f]My[/name_f] three favorites are [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], and [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] and [name_u]Rue[/name_u] as a nickname or middle name, but not really as a first, but they’re not bad and if you do like them go for it!

[name_u]Lou[/name_u]/[name_f]Lulu[/name_f] - fun names! I actually like [name_f]Lumina[/name_f], [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f], [name_m]Luka[/name_m], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], and [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], None of those are really southern to me.

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Moon[/name_f] sounds breathtaking! [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] is super cute and actually that feels very southern ( as you said you didn’t want too southern). [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_u]Rain[/name_u] would be beautiful.

I think you might like (for firsts and/or middles):

[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_u]Rue[/name_u] “[name_u]Lou[/name_u]”
