Help, Elsa was the name, but now with Frozen movie, is it ruined???

[name_m]Hi[/name_m],
Ok, [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] was to be my baby name for the past 10 years, she is my first due in [name_f]April[/name_f] and of course the animated movie FROZEN just came out and the evil sister is [name_f]ELSA[/name_f], uhg. Yes she is a beauty and they say she is not evil but misunderstood, ha ha. But the biggest issue for me is that I want a RARE name, usually like names out of the top 1000. But I am Norwegian and I want a scandinavian name and the only other name I really like is [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], I also love Biba, but its not scandinavian.

My husband just spent some time with a 3 year old who couldn’t stop talking about [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] from the movie, it made me cringe, thinking is this going to be the next [name_f]Emma[/name_f]???

Please let me know your thoughts

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is a beautiful name with a storied past. The association with the movie will fade, and even now I doubt it’s particularly strong outside of the three-year-old demographic. Would you regret passing over [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] in favor of something else?

I don’t think it is going to be a big association. The name itself may be rare, but it sounds like many popular names. I wouldn’t worry.

I don’t think it’s going to become popular. For the next year or two people may ask “[name_f]Elsa[/name_f], like from Frozen?” but memories about these things tend to be short. Disney isn’t as ubiquitous as it once was, and it’s the classics like [name_f]Cinderella[/name_f] or [name_f]Snow[/name_f] White people tend to keep going back to, not the newer ones. Can anyone remember the names of the characters in, say, Tangled? I can’t.

My first thought is actually [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] Schraeder (the Baroness) from The Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f], since I grew up with that movie. I don’t actually dislike her character, it was more a wrong woman for the man thing than anything she did wrong in my opinion.

I love the name [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]. I didn’t know that was a character’s name in Frozen, as I haven’t seen it, but I have a feeling no one will draw the correlation. Use it!!

I think the movie made it more useable and wearable if anything. It’s not ruined.

I don’t think [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] will suddenly become very popular just because of the movie. She will likely continue her steady climb up the charts, but I don’t see the name having a huge spike.

Definitely go with [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]. The association will fade. Besides, kids are still named [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f], [name_f]Belle[/name_f], [name_u]Ariel[/name_u], etc these days. [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is such a perfect name, I love it!

I don’t think you should give up on a name you’ve loved so long just because of some kids movie. I’ve never seen it, so I didn’t even know there was a character with that name. [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is a lovely name. It was my great-great-grandmother’s name.

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is a long time favorite of mine as well. It has been in the top 1000 names in the US for as long as records have been kept. Most recently it was at #551 so certainly not nearly common but not unheard of either.

The movie will bring more attention to the name (along with princess dolls and the like) for sure. However it was already gaining interest as an alternative version of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and as a similar name to [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] (I think this will become more popular than [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] actually), and other “[name_f]El[/name_f]-” names that are really trending now. I don’t see [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] becoming a top name but I have ruled it out as a first name option in favor of something more unusual. I still love the name and were my surname different would use it in the middle spot.

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is a great name! It is the name of my friend’s mom. I’ve never seen Frozen but I doubt this name will rise in popularity that much and even if it does it will likely take quite a while before it hits the top anyway.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Frozen is big right now because it came out rather recently. The hype will die down by [name_f]April[/name_f]. And besides, having a name associated with a favorite Disney movie, (even an “evil” character) might make her more popular with her schoolmates. [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is a lovely name and most importantly, you love it! [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t give it up after 10 years.

I wouldn’t worry about it! [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t let the new movie affect your decision because it probably won’t affect its popularity. I would suggest, however, that you go see the movie Frozen before naming your daughter [name_f]Elsa[/name_f].

I like it a lot and think you should use it, but if you are worried about it, just use it as a middle name.

I’ve seen Frozen three times now! If someone named their baby [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] I wouldn’t associate it with the movie. I don’t think it’s ruined

Disclaimer: Have been too lazy to read the other replies, so pardon for possibly saying the same as other posters.

Alright, first of all - I’m very engaged in Frozen (as evident by my icon, lol). I thought it was a decent film (though the manuscript was super weak, they should have made [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] the lead and avoided unnecessary side-stories) and sure, sure, [name_f]Anna[/name_f] was cool and relatable - but the real star of the film was [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]. She’s not the least evil, she was merely trying to protect her loved ones from her curse. She’s definitely not the worst person to share name with is all I’m saying.

Secondly, I will never understand the point of giving up a name you have loved for a long time because of popularity. Does love for the name not overpower the aversions against it being popular? If so, I have a hard time seeing how one can truly love said name, but that might just be me. Only thirteen girls were named [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] in Norway in 2012, I think it will take quite a while for it to become properly popular.

[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] is not Scandinavian, by the way. It’s [name_m]German[/name_m]. [name_f]Vilhelmina[/name_f] and Vilhelmine would be the Scandinavian versions - with Vilja, [name_f]Vilma[/name_f] and [name_f]Wilma[/name_f] being popular derivations of them. Scandinavian suggestions: [name_u]Alva[/name_u], Alvilda/Alvilde, [name_f]Annika[/name_f], [name_f]Asta[/name_f], [name_f]Astrid[/name_f], [name_u]Dagny[/name_u], [name_f]Eira[/name_f], [name_f]Ellisif[/name_f]/Ellisiv, [name_f]Elva[/name_f], Embla, Freyja, Frigga, [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f], [name_f]Iselin[/name_f], [name_f]Josefina[/name_f], [name_f]Kajsa[/name_f], [name_f]Karolina[/name_f], Lerke/Lærke, [name_f]Lilja[/name_f], [name_f]Lovisa[/name_f], [name_f]Nanna[/name_f], Sága, [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f], Svea, [name_f]Tuva[/name_f], [name_f]Vendela[/name_f], Veslemøy, [name_f]Vigdis[/name_f], Vilde and Ylva.

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is not going to become the next [name_f]Emma[/name_f]. [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is wonderful. I wouldn’t worry about the connection to the movie. I love the movie myself, as a huge Disney nerd, and she isn’t a bad or evil character. People name their children [name_f]Bella[/name_f] even though Twilight ruined it, and it isn’t even close to that big of an association. I also think that it would be cool to have my name in a Disney movie, but you are anti-movie, it isn’t a big deal, it isn’t going to be a very strong association.
I love [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] as well.
Use the name you love, don’t let a movie deter you.

I would still use [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]. It’s a lovely name and your daughter will probably like it that there is a character in a Disney film with the same name as her.

You know what I HIGHLY doubt that [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] will become the new [name_f]Emma[/name_f]. She doesn’t have the same versatile all around appeal. She doesn’t sound similar to another popular name - the [name_f]Emma[/name_f] craze started as people saw [name_f]Emma[/name_f] as a fresher choice for the already loved and overly popular [name_f]Emily[/name_f] - the only name she is similar too in the same way is [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] which isn’t top ten popular either. I feel that [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] only appeals to a certain group of people namely nameberry people. Haha. I would so stick with [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] it’s effortless and very pretty.

I don’t find [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] a negative character at all! Who knows, Disney might do the same as they did with Wreck it [name_m]Ralph[/name_m] and eventually sweep Frozen under the rug! However, I did really like the movie and would probably think of the character, but not in a bad way. I do like [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], also.
