[name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I are expecting a little girl this summer and can not decide between 6 names! We love each of these and are seeking some feedback: [name_f]Gloria[/name_f], [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], [name_u]Luca[/name_u], [name_f]Selah[/name_f], [name_f]Elah[/name_f], and [name_f]Zipporah[/name_f].
Please let us know what you think and thank you for your time!!
[name_f]Gloria[/name_f] – [name_u]Love[/name_u] it. I think the one though has the same appeal of many popular names right now, has been under the radar making it an accessible but unexpected choice.
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f] – Loo-see-uh? or Loo-chee-uh? or Loo-sha? All are legit pronunciations. I prefer Loo-see-uh. It’s also a lovely name and shares many same qualities as [name_f]Gloria[/name_f], though perhaps a little more popular.
[name_u]Luca[/name_u] – prefer this on a boy.
[name_f]Selah[/name_f] – Seh-lah or See-lah? [name_f]Lovely[/name_f], again a bit like [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] but even more unexpected.
[name_f]Elah[/name_f] – [name_f]Ella[/name_f]? Ee-luh? If you’re going for [name_f]Ella[/name_f] pronunciation, I would suggest opting for [name_f]Ella[/name_f] as the spelling. If the other pronunciation, I think you will have to be ready to correct people – even after they’ve been corrected because they’ll be saying [name_f]Ella[/name_f], in which case [name_f]Selah[/name_f] is a far more attractive option.
[name_f]Zipporah[/name_f] – I love the way this looks on paper, but not so much the way it sounds. Some really love the nickname Zippy and I don’t.
I’ve listed these from top to bottom in order of my preference…
Luca - My favorite name on your list!! Love, LOVE!! Though, I prefer it Lucca for a girl. I think it sounds fresh & modern, sweet, yet spunky, & I imagine a Lucca to be quite stunning!!
Selah - If this name is pronounced “Sell-ah,” it would be in 2nd place on my list. I find that name pretty & unique. But if you’re pronouncing it “See-lah,” it would move farther down the list for me. The trouble is, I’m not sure how to pronounce it, & speaking from experience with my own name, constantly correcting people can be endlessly annoying.
Lucia - Beautiful. Beautiful name, beautiful girl. I also love the nickname Lucy!
Elah - Not exactly sure of your intended pronunciation on this one… Ee-lah or Ell-ah?? Unless this name is more popular where you’re from than where I’m from, I think if you choose this one, she will get pronunciation confusion a lot & constantly have to be correcting people.
Gloria - Feels extremely dated to me, as it’s generally been on the decline since the 1950’s. I just can’t get behind this one on a little girl.
Zipporah - Moses’s wife!! This name is so rare, that I immediately make this Biblical association. This is my least favorite name on your list because I think she will be teased. In my opinion, it’s just not a pretty looking or sounding name. And I’m not a fan of the nickname Zippy.
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f] (pn loo-see-uh) is my favorite by far.
Then [name_f]Gloria[/name_f]. The others just don’t do anything for me, and i REALLY don’t like [name_f]Zipporah[/name_f].
I really like [name_f]Lucia[/name_f]. It’s such a beautiful, strong, feminine name! As opposed to others on this thread, my favourite pronunciation is Loo-sha.
I like [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] best. I’m not sure how you pronounce the name [name_f]Elah[/name_f], so maybe you could use a similar name like [name_f]Elora[/name_f]?
Great names. I love [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] the most; makes me think of the little sister [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] from the [name_f]Frances[/name_f] books (by [name_m]Russell[/name_m] Hoban).
Lately I am loving the name [name_f]Lucia[/name_f]. Probably because of the Swedish Sankta [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] tradition…it’s pretty interesting but gives me a warm fuzzy feeling insdie. Picture a girl wearing a white robe with a red sash, with a crown of candles on her head (yep, really!) carrying a tray with saffron buns to the household, singing in the winter dawn. All that to say…I love the name [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] (which I pronounce Loo-see-ah).
I do not like [name_u]Luca[/name_u] for a girl.
I do like [name_f]Gloria[/name_f], surprisingly. It’s not something I would use, but it would be terrifically cute.
I’m not a huge fan of [name_f]Elah[/name_f], [name_f]Selah[/name_f], or [name_f]Zipporah[/name_f], but the latter two would be okay if you really love them and are committed to them, I think. I’m not sure about [name_f]Elah[/name_f].
[name_f]Elah[/name_f] - would that be like [name_f]Ella[/name_f]? If so, spell it the normal way please!
[name_f]Selah[/name_f] - [name_m]How[/name_m] is this pronounced
[name_f]Zipporah[/name_f] - too long for me!
[name_u]Luca[/name_u] - this is a boys name for me.
[name_f]Gloria[/name_f] - Really pretty! Reminds me of the character on Modern Family. I love the meaning of [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] though! nn [name_f]Glory[/name_f] is super cute!
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f] - I like this pronounced Loo-see-a, but no matter how I pronounce it, it sounds a bit odd in my mouth - as though I can’t say it fast enough or something. I prefer [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].
I have only heard it pronounced [name_m]Say[/name_m]-luh. It’s a gorgeous biblical name, and for that it’s my favorite. And even though [name_f]Zipporah[/name_f] is a little out there, it’s my second favorite, because I think it sounds so gorgeous.
Thank you all for your responses! We’ve really appreciated the feedback and have narrowed our list to two names. I can rest easier deciding between two rather than six :).
