My maternal grandmother just passed away… a few weeks shy of my due date. This would have been her first great-grand child so we would really like to honor her somehow in our little girls middle name. Only problem is we’re not too crazy about using [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] outright.
First names we’re narrowed it down to are [name_f]Esme[/name_f], [name_u]Eden[/name_u], [name_f]Isla[/name_f] or [name_f]Indra[/name_f].
I’m so sorry to hear of your grandmother’s death, but it’s a lovely idea to honour her in your daughter’s name.
Have you thought about simply using a name that starts with H? It’s a relatively simple and discreet way to honour her that still gives you a lot of choices. [name_u]Halle[/name_u], [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], [name_u]Haley[/name_u], or [name_u]Hilary[/name_u] might work nicely, but I think [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] would have to be my preference along with your choices.
[name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] would probably be the best combo in my opinion!
What about using your grandmother’s middle name or maiden name? [name_u]Hillary[/name_u] seems like a good option like pp mentioned. Or maybe [name_f]Hildie[/name_f]? For H names maybe [name_f]Heidi[/name_f] or [name_f]Helena[/name_f]?
Or what about [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] since it contains all of the letters in [name_f]Hilda[/name_f]? Or [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] because it has the same ending.
I think a very close honor name for [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] would be [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] ([name_f]Tilda[/name_f] --> [name_f]Hilda[/name_f]). Actually, an alternate spelling of [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f], which would be even closer! [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] also share the same meaning (battle woman).
If that’s too similar, another option is one of my favorite names, [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. This has essentially the same meaning, “(grey) battle maiden”, and it is derived from the same root as [name_f]Hilda[/name_f]/[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]!
Aw, I actually love [name_f]Hilda[/name_f]! I think it’s a cool name and makes me think of a blonde, vigorous, rosy-cheeked girl fresh from the Swiss Alps.
I’ll also submit the lovely [name_m]French[/name_m] name [name_f]Clothilde[/name_f] or [name_f]Clothilda[/name_f].
