Main Character: Average 20 year old. Physically, she’s a little bit on the shorter side, like 5’5’, which is great for wearing heels, except she’s too clumsy to be able to walk in them. She about average weight too, except her body isn’t quite proportioned right and she has curves where she doesn’t necessarily want them. Her hair is the color of a chocolate bar, and her eyes are a stormy grey. Personalitywise, shes a hopeless romantic who wants nothing more than to fit in with everyone and be made feel special by others around her, specifically by someone of a male species. She doesn’t strive to be “popular” as she recognizes that’s something she would have wanted in junior high, but she want to be the kind of girl that people want to be around and spend time with. She’s analytic and a bit more judgmental than she probably should be, but has kind intentions. Shes curious, but can be deemed shy because she is too afraid to speak up and say something dumb.
I was thinking I want a common name, that’s feminine and is romantic. [name]Eloise[/name] is a name I thought of, and that I like, but its just not perfect. So maybe something along that line? Any ideas?
Some of these are great ideas but they don’t quite work for the character because I either have bad associations with them, they have other literary ties (like [name]Ginny[/name] from [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] for example), or they aren’t quite right for the character (sorry, I’m picky). I might use them for some other key people. Anyway, from your ideas, here’s what I’m liking:
[name]Iris[/name] or [name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Camilla[/name]
[name]Juliana[/name] nn [name]Julie[/name]/[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Talia[/name]
[name]Helena[/name]
[name]Eloise[/name] (still like it, but its not quite there)
Thoughts? Favorites? Any other names stand out you?
Not too big on [name]Iris[/name] or [name]Ivy[/name]
Would you use a nn for [name]Camilla[/name]? [name]Just[/name] curious.
For [name]Juliana[/name], I think the nn [name]Julie[/name] works better than [name]Julia[/name] for your character
[name]Talia[/name] is nice
[name]How[/name] would you pronounce [name]Helena[/name]? I’ve heard some say “Hell-EEN-Uh”, and I’ve heard [name]Helen[/name]-with-an-a “Hell-EN-ah”, and “Hell-AYY-[name]Nuh[/name]” [name]Just[/name] curious, because I didn’t think of that before suggesting it.
For [name]Eloise[/name], I think of [name]Eloise[/name] at the Plaza, and while it’s a good name, it’s a hard association to shake, personally. Would you use a nn, [name]Ellie[/name], [name]Lulu[/name], or [name]Lou[/name]? or would you stick with [name]Eloise[/name]?

My friend however, did suggest to me that it could be an interesting piece to the story if the character has a completely unusual/foreign name, because it could add to the desire for her to fit it? Not sure what everyone else thinks, but I certainley think its an intriguing idea, especially since it could be fun to find a unique/unusual name

[name]Hannah[/name]
[name]Helena[/name]
[name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Kate[/name]
Oh my goodness you are all so helpful! Alright, so I have it narrowed down to the following three. [name]Ive[/name] decided not to use an outlandish name- one of the antagonists has a flair for the dramatic, and so I think I’m going to use one of those names on her- that way the main character is even more separated from her. here are the finalists:
[name]Camilla[/name]
[name]Amelia[/name] or [name]Emilia[/name] (can’t decide!)
[name]Helena[/name] (Hel-ay-na)
I like the sound of [name]Amelia[/name] more than [name]Camilla[/name]; I’ve also known a number of annoying Camillas, to the point of disliking the name.
A nice compromise, also, would be [name]Camille[/name] (Cuh-meel).
But my vote goes to [name]Amelia[/name]; a bit nicer, more nicknames, gives varied impressions.
I’ve been leaning recently towards [name]Amelia[/name] too- so I’m glad that’s been the favorite.
In theory, I like the [name]Charlotte[/name]/[name]Charlie[/name] idea, but I just don’t like a masculine name for my character and I think [name]Charlotte[/name] is too stiff (don’t get me wrong, I [name]LOVE[/name] the name) for this particular situation.
