Okay so I am 16 weeks pregnant, we are not sure what the sex is yet, so would like to have both a boy and girl name. Our last name is [name]Rogers[/name].
My 20 yo sister recently passed away very unexpectedly (in a car accident), and I would like to honor her in the name in some way her name was [name]Rachel[/name] [name]Frost[/name]. She tried to go by [name]Rae[/name] a couple times but it never really stuck but she loved it. I do not really want a direct [name]Rachel[/name]- maybe names with the nn [name]Rae[/name] and I am even liking [name]Frost[/name] as a mn.
My DH’s Grandma is named [name]Violet[/name], so we were thinking [name]Violet[/name] [name]Frost[/name], any thoughts on this, or alternatives?
Boy names are little trickier for us, we are having a hard time agreeing. We like the name [name]Lincoln[/name] [name]Matthew[/name], nn [name]Linc[/name]. Or [name]Graham[/name]. [name]Matthew[/name] is a family name, but we do not have to use it. Basically nothing to out there as Dh is pretty conservative but not too popular. Although I know [name]Violet[/name] is getting very popular. I am really hoping you berries will help me out.
I really like [name]Frost[/name]. I tend to prefer it more on a boy, but I think it can work on a girl. [name]Violet[/name] [name]Rachel[/name] [name]Frost[/name] might be pretty.
I like both [name]Violet[/name] and [name]Frost[/name], but the two together make me think of a purple icy landscape. Would you and your husband consider [name]Viola[/name]? It has the sound of [name]Violet[/name], possesses strong literary/[name]Shakespeare[/name] and musical cred, and avoids the popularity of [name]Violet[/name] (ranked in the 900s). [name]Viola[/name] [name]Frost[/name] escapes the adjective+noun problem and still honors both women. I think it’s gorgeous!
Alternatively, I think [name]Rae[/name] can work as a nn for any R name, but most people like their nicknames more related to the antecedent. What about these:
[name]Raquel[/name]/[name]Racquel[/name]
[name]Renee[/name]
[name]Ramona[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name]; I think it has the same spunky sound as [name]Violet[/name]
[name]Renata[/name]
[name]Rain/name - though [name]Violet[/name] [name]Rain[/name] would be a step backward…
[name]Raina[/name]/[name]Rayna[/name]/[name]Reina[/name]
[name]Lorraine[/name]
[name]Aurelia[/name] - I pronounce it Au-RAIL-yuh; I love that the “rae” sound is surrounded in a name that means gold
As for boys, I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Lincoln[/name] (though I prefer the nickname [name]Cole[/name]). [name]Graham[/name] is sturdy and handsome, too. With these names in mind, here are a few more suggestions:
[name]Grant[/name] (like [name]Graham[/name])
[name]Nolan[/name] (like [name]Lincoln[/name])
[name]North[/name] (edgy, but maybe it would honor [name]Frost[/name]? I like [name]Frost[/name] and [name]North[/name] as middles…or firsts)
[name]Everett[/name] (nn [name]Rhett[/name] or Rev)
[name]Andrew[/name]
[name]Finn[/name] or [name]Flynn[/name]
[name]Miles[/name]
[name]Callum[/name]
[name]Winston[/name] or [name]Winslow[/name] (nn [name]Win[/name])
[name]Silas[/name] or [name]Cyrus[/name]
[name]Garrett[/name]
[name]Elliot[/name]
[name]Reed[/name]
[name]Matthias[/name] (as an alternative to [name]Matthew[/name])
For a girl:
[name]Love[/name] the idea of [name]Aurelia[/name] [name]Violet[/name]
[name]Grace[/name] [name]Viola[/name] could be an option.
I think [name]Violet[/name] [name]Rachel[/name] [name]Frost[/name] looks great, however [name]Violet[/name] [name]Rachel[/name] [name]Frost[/name] [name]Rogers[/name] would not sound as nice together.
Some nameberries have mentioned [name]Winter[/name] as a MN for girls. That could hint to [name]Frost[/name] in a creative way.
For example [name]Violet[/name] [name]Winter[/name] [name]Grace[/name] [name]Rogers[/name].
For a boy:
[name]Love[/name] [name]Graham[/name] + It has the [name]Ray[/name] sound to refer to [name]Rachel[/name]
I’m thinking [name]Graham[/name] [name]Elliot[/name]
If you prefer the [name]Ray[/name] sound in the middle
[name]How[/name] about [name]Raymond[/name] as a MN, for example [name]Miles[/name] [name]Raymond[/name]?
I am terrible at suggesting names, but I would like to say that I think [name]Frost[/name] would work well as a middle name for either a girl or boy. [name]Rae[/name] works for both too: [name]Rae[/name] for a girl, [name]Ray[/name] for a boy.
Thanks ellenelle I also love [name]Ramona[/name] I would say it is a really strong contender in our choice, and I had not thought of using [name]Violet[/name] as the mn, but I am really liking that idea.
My DH loves the [name]Linc[/name] nn, and I think nn’s evolve as the child grows so it is not my main focus for the boy name. I am going to show my Husband your list it gave me a lot to think about. Thank you so much!
Yes part of the reason [name]Graham[/name] is on my short list is because of the [name]Ray[/name] nod- although not overtly obvious, and I agree [name]Violet[/name] [name]Rachel[/name] [name]Frost[/name] [name]Rogers[/name] is a bit clunky sounding. [name]Winter[/name] is pretty but I think I prefer [name]Frost[/name] as it is my maiden name, my sisters name and a nod to my dad all in one go.
I second [name]Ramona[/name] [name]Violet[/name], I think it’s really nice. My name is [name]Rachel[/name] and sometimes friends have called me ‘Rel’, so that is a possible mn of some sort if you want a tribute to [name]Rachel[/name] other than [name]Rachel[/name] or [name]Rae[/name].
Other girl possibilities:
[name]Regan[/name]
[name]Rosamund[/name]/[name]Rosalie[/name]/[name]Rosalind[/name] - all can have [name]Rae[/name] as a nn and are quite pretty and feminine
[name]Grace[/name]
[name]Ottilie[/name]
[name]Imogen[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]
DH of the OP here. I would like to thank everybody for the helpful suggestions. For more of my perspective I have always been drawn to biblical names for boys, but not too popular. I like [name]Able[/name], [name]Micah[/name], [name]Elijah[/name] (nn [name]Eli[/name]), [name]Job[/name], and [name]Caleb[/name]. I also like some more modern sounding boy names like [name]Emmett[/name], [name]Finn[/name], and [name]Lincoln[/name]. I really like [name]Cole[/name] as a nn for [name]Lincoln[/name].
For girls I am more undecided. I like [name]Violet[/name] a lot, and I would like to incorporate [name]Rae[/name] in the name. Any suggestions you all have would be helpful. Best regards.
