Before I even give the names that my best friend has narrowed it down to for her baby I want everyone to know that we do not share the same political heroes. That said, she asked me to post on here to see what the general consensus between her two finalists is (I’ve tried to talk her out of such politically charged choices, but she and her husband are staunch andstubborn…its these two or bust). Which do you prefer (They’re unisex for a reason…they don’t intend to find out their child’s gender until birth.), and which is better for a guy and which one for a girl?
Chipper [name]Palin[/name] (After Chipper [name]Jones[/name] of the Braves and politician [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Palin[/name])
[name]Taylor[/name] [name]Romney[/name] (After musician [name]Taylor[/name] [name]Hanson[/name] and politician Mitt [name]Romney[/name])
I don’t know if I can get on board with Chipper as a name, so I will have to go with [name]Taylor[/name] [name]Romney[/name]. I suppose with a politically charges middle name, no one ever has to know if the child doesn’t want them to…at least once they get older.
[name]Do[/name] you think she’d consider [name]Reagan[/name] as a middle name instead? A big disadvantage to naming your kid after a current politician is that you never know what the politician will do tomorrow. If [name]Palin[/name] or [name]Romney[/name] suddenly do something to make themselves universally disliked it could be tough for the baby. (And the parents.) With a name like [name]Reagan[/name] (or [name]Lincoln[/name]) you know their whole story.
Another option is to use the politicians first names instead. [name]Sarah[/name] and [name]Willard[/name] are far less of a problem than [name]Palin[/name] and [name]Romney[/name].
But of their two choices I prefer [name]Taylor[/name] [name]Romney[/name] for both a boy or a girl.
Thanks for the input so far! I actually suggested [name]Reagan[/name], but she also wants something that “isn’t common without sounding weird” (her words). She said that although [name]Reagan[/name] would be an honorable choice, she just couldn’t go with something that common. I will be sure to bring up the point about current politicians’ future unknown choices, but knowing them (stubborn and staunch), it won’t do any good.
Does anyone prefer one more than the other for a girl versus boy or vice versa?
Or is [name]Taylor[/name] [name]Romney[/name] the favorite no matter the sex?
It’s strange that your friend would find [name]Reagan[/name] “common” and not [name]Taylor[/name]. :? Oh well, maybe I’m missing something. I would never saddle a child with Chipper or [name]Palin[/name] quite frankly. Chipper would be cute as a nn only. Therefore, I’ll have to go with [name]Taylor[/name] [name]Romney[/name] as the flow is much smoother than Chipper [name]Palin[/name]. There are too many ppp’s in that name!
FYI - [name]Larry[/name] [name]Wayne[/name] [name]Jones[/name] [name]Jr[/name]. is Chipper’s real name.
@[name]Mischa[/name], no wonder he goes by the nn Chipper! And, yes, she realizes that [name]Taylor[/name] is common, which is why she wants the political name(s) to be less so. Since [name]Taylor[/name] is from [name]Taylor[/name] [name]Hanson[/name], how do you berries feel about [name]Hanson[/name] as a name? I thought about suggesting it to her, but don’t want to if everyone hates it (because I know whe’ll probably love it and wonder why she didn’t think about it!).
I’m sorry, but Chipper is ghastly. I find all of the names objectionable, for both personal reasons that mean nothing to this couple and the reasons already stated, but PLEASE convince her not to saddle a child with Chipper. My rule of thumb for naming is: imagine that your beautiful baby has a conventionally unattractive phase. A gawkly, gangly or overweight and pimply phase. Give your poor awkward little chub a break and name him something that won’t add fuel to the fire.
