Ok, so my family is a bit like the Brady bunch. I have always kept my maiden name (Edmonds), my 2 daughter’s have their father’s last name, and my partner and his 2 kids share a last name (Sargeant). We are having a boy together in August, and we need to figure out a last name! We are both honestly fine with using either one, for many reasons that I won’t get into here.
I love the first name Bennett, which is actually my partner’s middle name, and his mother’s maiden name.
So what goes better with Bennett?
I think [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] Edmonds sounds better but I really do love how [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] Sargeant looks.
Whichever you end up with you could use each other’s last name for his middle. [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] [name_m]Edmond/name_m Sargeant? [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] Sargeant Edmonds? [name_m]Robinson[/name_m] is my last name and I plan on using [name_u]Robin[/name_u] as a first or middle for a future son.
If you and your partner are having this baby together, then I feel like it makes more sense for the baby to have his last name, even if you aren’t married and regardless of which ln sounds better with the fn.
I like the idea of using whichever you don’t use as a middle name and I think either of your last names would work as a middle name. I like [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] Edmonds better, but if all of the other kids have their fathers’ last names, I think it would be odd for this child not to as well. Then your children would have 3 different last names instead of just 2. I think with using Sargeant your son would also share a last name with some of his siblings which is nice too.
[name_m]Bennet[/name_m] [name_m]Edmond/name_m Sargeant would also continue the pattern from your partner’s family of having the mother’s maiden (or last) name as the middle.
If you don’t like the idea of using one of your last names as the middle, what about giving him 4 names. [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] ______ Edmonds Sargeant, either two last names or two middle names. I like this better than hyphenated as it feels much easier to drop one later on.
Thanks for your help!! I’m leaning toward Edmonds, but I get such a variety of reactions from people when I tell them we are thinking of using my last name! I suppose that will wear off.
Thoughts on [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] Edmonds?
I like [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] Edmonds Sargeant. While [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] Edmonds may sound better, I do think that since your daughters have their father’s last name, your son should have his dad’s last name too. You can use Edmonds as the middle!
