Help me decide between two names

My husband and I are torn between two names.

Nora vs Eleanora ?

This is our third baby & we’ve narrowed it down to these two but we’re stuck.

Our other two’s names are Liam and Serena

I prefer [name_f]Nora[/name_f]!

[name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] feels stuffy to me. [name_f]Nora[/name_f] feels more refined and graceful.

If you’re torn… why not choose [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f], because you can then use [name_f]Nora[/name_f] as a nickname if you want? And if it doesn’t fit, you have the full name [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] as well as all its other nicknames.

I’d only pick [name_f]Nora[/name_f] if you’re either sure you want to call her [name_f]Nora[/name_f], or you really hate the nickname [name_f]Ellie[/name_f].

Oh yes! Definitely if we’re still stuck or it’s a split vote still all across, we’re going to probably play it safe and end up with [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] bc that way we’d like you said just use [name_f]Nora[/name_f] as a nickname!

I would lean [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] nickname [name_f]Nora[/name_f]. I like the elegance of [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] and the flexibility. If [name_f]Nora[/name_f] doesn’t feel like a [name_f]Nora[/name_f], she can always go by [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Leni[/name_f], [name_m]Rory[/name_m], or [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] in full. I also knew a little [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] who was so gentle and enthusiastic so I have a soft spot for the name now.

However, that’s also the potential downside. If you don’t like the other potential nicknames or are really attached calling her [name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Nora[/name_f] might be the winner. And [name_f]Nora[/name_f] is a lovely, warm choice as well.

Another deciding factor could be your other children’s names. Obviously, some families have more cohesion between siblings names than others and there’s nothing wrong with siblings having all different names. But if your older two are [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] and [name_m]Luke[/name_m], a little [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] might feel overdressed. Similarly, a [name_f]Nora[/name_f] with siblings named [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_m]Aurelius[/name_m] might wonder why her name is so much simpler. It’s a small thing, but it could help break the tie.

I would pick [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f]! I love having the longer version of a name because I feel like it can age well throughout all stages of life !

Personally I’d pick [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] nn [name_f]Nora[/name_f], because it gives you the best of both worlds, but if you’re only thinking about [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] to have a longer name for [name_f]Nora[/name_f] to be a nickname for, I’d say just go with [name_f]Nora[/name_f]. I know a little girl by this name and it suits her just fine. Good luck!

Personally, I prefer [name_f]Eleanora[/name] – it feels beautiful and elegant while still having a variety of approachable and fun nicknames to ground it. However, think it could be good to consider the length of your other children’s names if you’re having trouble deciding. I think [name_f]Eleanora[/name] could potentially feel slightly stuffy if siblings’ names are shorter, or [name_f]Nora[/name] could end up feeling too insubstantial. They’re both gorgeous names and I don’t really think you can go wrong either way! Good luck deciding.

I think I’d go with [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f]! [name_m]You[/name_m] get the best of both worlds because [name_f]Nora[/name_f] is such a gorgeous nickname, but she’d also have the option of using her full name as she grows up. [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] feels so elegant and timeless, and [name_f]Nora[/name_f] is just as sweet on its own. [name_m]You[/name_m] really can’t go wrong!

Both are lovely :rose:

[name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] is beautiful such a majestic name and I think more unexpected than [name_f]Nora[/name_f]. So for me as your deciding between the two names I would go [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] with the nickname [name_f]Nora[/name_f].

I vote [name_f]Nora[/name_f]! If that’s what you are going to call her anyway, then it will be simpler in the future if that is her legal name.

Here are some prompts that might help:

  • what are your other two names? Are they cottagecore clunky, grand and epic, punchy and urban, or short & sweet? If the first two, then would go [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], last two, [name_f]Nora[/name_f].
  • Do you (like me) get twitchy about the name [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]? If so, and depending on where you live and how likely it is, you might want to take that out as a possible nickname.
  • Wouis either you or your husband be genuinely upset not to get the version of the name? Has someone been able to get their ideas across the line from babies 1 and 2?
  • Also, as a wildcard (and it might only help confirm your two), what about [name_f]Leonor[/name_f]? Or [name_f]Leonora[/name_f]? I love these names - and they give you the [name_f]Nora[/name_f] (and [name_m]Leo[/name_m], and [name_m]Lenny[/name_m]) nickname option(s) while taking [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] away as a possibility (sorry to [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] mums I just don’t like [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] - partly too popular but it’s also just too squishy cute for me). I also find Leonor/ [name_f]Leonora[/name_f] a nice midway option between the grand and a tad clunky [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] and the streamlined and a tad remote, [name_f]Nora[/name_f].

I really like [name_f]Leonora[/name_f] and [name_f]Leonor[/name_f].

I much prefer [name_f]Nora[/name_f]

I tend to prefer [name_f]Nora[/name_f]. It might help if we knew your other kids’ names. Sometimes that changes the answer.

[name_f]Eleanora[/name_f]! It’s such a beautiful, pretty and quaint name and can easily be shortened to [name_f]Nora[/name_f] as a nickname if you’d desire to!

I prefer [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f].

These are all great points!

And my other two are [name_m]Liam[/name_m] and [name_f]Serena[/name_f]

I don’t usually love repeat letters but I think [name_f]Leonor[/name_f] or [name_f]Leonora[/name_f] would be wonderful especially (but not only) if this is your final baby to “tie up set” (obviously talking just about names!). But [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] is very feminine & pretty with [name_f]Serena[/name_f] and takes the set on a more frontier & flowy direction. And [name_f]Nora[/name_f] does match [name_m]Liam[/name_m] nicely, and makes for a crisper set. Maybe a teeny bit clashy with [name_f]Serena[/name_f] but only a teeny bit. Visually look great. Tricky choice but good to know all work!

Some other ideas:

[name_f]Honora[/name_f] (vintage and gorgeous- - and gives nn [name_f]Nora[/name_f] but also [name_f]Honey[/name_f])

[name_f]Lenora[/name_f] (more streamlined and gentle, like [name_f]Serena[/name_f], still gives [name_f]Nora[/name_f] - or [name_f]Leni[/name_f], I like this visually better than [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f])

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] (means she has her own ending of her name, and you can still use [name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] or [name_f]Leni[/name_f] etc)

[name_f]New[/name_f] ideas if still helpful: [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f], [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Fleur[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or [name_f]Elsbeth[/name_f].
