Help me fall in (or out of) love with something!

Anything, really… boys’ names have always been ridiculously hard for me. I don’t even have a proper top 5, just a top 2. [name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] are my only constant favorites, with [name_m]Henry[/name_m] sort of lurking in the background (but his popularity turns me off. Might make a middle out of him, as it’s a family surname).

[name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] both embody what I’m really looking for in a boy’s name. They’re both (in my opinion) decidedly masculine, but not in-your-face macho in that [name_m]Breaker[/name_m]/[name_m]Gunnar[/name_m]/[name_m]Butch[/name_m] way. They have a softer, more lyrical quality, and I could picture either on an artist, a judge, a doctor, or a musician. If I have my way, my sons will grow up surrounded by arts, crafts, nature, animals, and music. They’d be the type to bring home strays rather than chase them away with sticks. I could just as easily see any boy of mine knitting and building birdhouses as I could roughhousing and playing in the mud. If they looked like me and my SO they’d end up with light brown or brownish-red wavy hair and blue or green eyes with long lashes, bow lips and straight noses. My SO is long-haired so there’s a chance they’d go for that as well  of course I’m just imagining at this point.

Getting to the point… I used nymbler for some inspiration and these names caught my eye. I have some concerns about some of them so I’d love brutally honest opinions (not about [name_u]August[/name_u] or [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] though please, those are set) and any suggestions if you have them. [name_f]Every[/name_f] name is welcome except [name_m]William[/name_m] - please, please do not suggest [name_m]William[/name_m]. It’s out for reasons I don’t want to get into.

Without further ado, what do you think of:
[name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] - [name_m]OTT[/name_m]? Maybe a middle?
[name_m]Clement[/name_m] - I also like [name_f]Clemence[/name_f]/[name_m]Clemens[/name_m], but worry about whether it’s too harsh sounding. [name_m]Clement[/name_m] looks like ‘cement’ to me, anyone else?
[name_m]Harmon[/name_m]
[name_u]Dexter[/name_u]
[name_m]Bayard[/name_m]
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m]
[name_m]Tobin[/name_m]
[name_m]Luther[/name_m] - SO’s surname is “Belts”, some commented it might sound like “Looser Belts” with a lisp, or “Leather Belts”?
[name_m]Prosper[/name_m]
[name_m]Winston[/name_m]
[name_m]Whistler[/name_m] - a current GP that might make a push for my real list.
[name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]

[name_f]TIA[/name_f]!

I don’t think [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] is [name_m]OTT[/name_m], it would make a great fn or mn. I like most of the names on your list, with the exception of [name_m]Prosper[/name_m]… it’s just a bit too Puritan-sounding for my taste.

Some ideas:
[name_m]Bernard[/name_m]
[name_u]Darby[/name_u]
[name_m]Ralston[/name_m]
[name_f]Dagan[/name_f]
Danior
[name_m]Dedric[/name_m]
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u]
[name_m]Urson[/name_m]

I don’t know what [name_m]OTT[/name_m] means but most of your names are too out there for me. I love [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and I also like [name_m]Shepard[/name_m]. [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] is a good name too I’m just not a fan.

[name_u]August[/name_u] & [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] are great names!!!

Although very match-y with [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m], I thought you might like [name_u]Willoughby[/name_u]. He’s all bad-boy for me thanks to [name_f]Fanney[/name_f] [name_m]Burney[/name_m] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u], but it sounds so dashing and happy go lucky.

Also matching, Rigsby.
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Ludwig[/name_m] or [name_m]Ludovic[/name_m] nn [name_m]Ludo[/name_m]?

Keepers!! For me, these embody the vision you described of your future sons:
[name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]
[name_m]Ulysses[/name_m]
[name_m]Harmon[/name_m]*
[name_m]Bayard[/name_m]
[name_m]Winston[/name_m]

Meh because of the following associations/reasons:
[name_m]Clement[/name_m] = cement, very harsh sound
[name_u]Dexter[/name_u] = serial killer also killed this name for me
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m] = Old [name_u]West[/name_u] saloon bartender
[name_m]Tobin[/name_m] = seems incomplete
[name_m]Luther[/name_m] = due to the last name situation, otherwise it is awesome!
[name_m]Prosper[/name_m] = [name_m]Prospero[/name_m] from the [name_f]Tempest[/name_f]
[name_m]Whistler[/name_m] = [name_u]Andy[/name_u] [name_m]Griffith[/name_m] Show & [name_f]Flo[/name_f] [name_f]Rida[/name_f] song about blow jobs…

[name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] are good ones! I actually met a little [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] a little while ago and he’s so cute and sweet I really like this name now.

[name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] - I don’t think it’s [name_m]OTT[/name_m], it’s my newest addition to my short list of boys names. I think it’s wonderful, windy and nautical.
[name_m]Clement[/name_m] - I don’t see cement, nor do I find it hard sounding. It reminds me of brass instruments for some reason.
[name_m]Harmon[/name_m] - Not bad, I quite like it.
[name_u]Dexter[/name_u] - I do love an x here and there, but this name is very hard and rough.
[name_m]Bayard[/name_m] - [name_f]LOVE[/name_f]! A magical horse and a good knight, what’s not to love?
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m] - I actually like [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], it’s got a certain retro charm and swagger.
[name_m]Tobin[/name_m] - [name_m]Tobin[/name_m]'s very cute and charming.
[name_m]Luther[/name_m] - I don’t think it’s an issue. [name_m]Luther[/name_m]'s got such a nice sound and looks very pretty written out. And it’s got namesakes.
[name_m]Prosper[/name_m] - This is fine, but I prefer Italian [name_m]Prospero[/name_m]. [name_m]Prosper[/name_m] sounds very preppy, [name_m]Prospero[/name_m]'s storms and oceans.
[name_m]Winston[/name_m] - [name_f]Love[/name_f]! [name_m]Winston[/name_m]'s very cool, it used to be on my list.
[name_m]Whistler[/name_m] - The only one I’m saying a definite NO to.
[name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] - I like [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m], if you’re going to go for a profession name, this is the one to choose.

[name_f]Love[/name_f] love love Ulyssses! We plan to use this for a middle name if we have a boy.

I also really like [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m], but prefer the spelling [name_m]Shepard[/name_m]. [name_f]Love[/name_f] nickname [name_m]Shep[/name_m], too.

I like [name_m]Luther[/name_m] but it seems serious and studious to me.

What about Crusoe? We like this one for its adventurer spirit, and it has great nicknames, [name_m]Crew[/name_m], [name_u]Cruz[/name_u]. It doesn’t pair well with our last name, unfortunately.

I love [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]… I think it’s a great name for all ages of his life, and it would fit whoever he decides to grow up and be. Kind of old, kind of nerdy, kind of tough, and kind of sweet (I think of [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] the imaginary bunny from the movie [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]). Not to mention, I think [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] has a nice ring to it.

Good luck!

@mimiottawa - Thanks for your suggestions! [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] is handsome, and you reminded me I also like [name_m]Orson[/name_m] a little… the other names don’t strike my fancy, but I appreciate the input

@pemdas - [name_m]OTT[/name_m] means Over The Top, which is basically what you’re describing! Thanks though… to each their own, I suppose!

@ruolan - [name_u]Willoughby[/name_u] is on the right track, I just don’t love it :frowning: I think it’s the [name_m]Will[/name_m]- part… my dad is the [name_m]William[/name_m] and I in no way want him to think he’s being honored, as rude as that might sound. [name_m]Rigby[/name_m] makes me think of the Beatles’ song ‘[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_m]Rigby[/name_m]’. I think [name_m]Ludo[/name_m] is adorable though! Never thought of the [name_f]Flo[/name_f] [name_f]Rida[/name_f] song associated with [name_m]Whistler[/name_m], I think that will pass though. That song is already practically unplayed. I like it because of the artist’s name, but it’s definitely more a middle option than first.

@ottilie - Wow, thank you for the list! These caught my eye: [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], [name_m]Bowen[/name_m], [name_m]Bertram[/name_m] (love! especially with [name_m]Bram[/name_m] as a NN), [name_m]Cosmo[/name_m], [name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m], [name_m]Leander[/name_m], [name_m]Maxim[/name_m] (but I worry about the magazine connection), [name_m]Roland[/name_m], and [name_m]Stellan[/name_m]. Apparently I’m extremely picky, but I so appreciate you taking the time! It’s funny you suggested [name_m]Lester[/name_m]… the reason I chose [name_m]Luther[/name_m] was as a subtle nod to SO’s grandfather [name_m]Lester[/name_m] and my grandmother [name_f]Judith[/name_f] sort of as a combo name. IDK if that makes sense to anyone else, but it makes sense to me, haha!

@mariemama - I love your style… I have been drooling over [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] for months! Also your signature reminded me that I kind of like [name_m]Otis[/name_m]. I just am afraid he would hate me for naming him that! [name_m]Luther[/name_m] is sort of serious, but I like that about it  Crusoe has a nice sound, there’s just something it reminds me of that I can’t put my finger on. I think it sort of looks like the word ‘cruel’ and that might be the problem? I don’t know, I’m an odd one I guess.

@chagger - Yay, a vote of confidence for [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]! I think [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] is ready to come back for sure. Thanks

I can see [name_m]Clement[/name_m] as a brother to [name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m]. I’m quite fond of it; I love the meaning, and I feel like it’s got a lot of that “strong and gentle” feeling I get from your other two. I don’t see it as cement at all.

[name_m]Winston[/name_m]'s good too! I don’t mind [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] at all, especially as a middle. Goes nicely with [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. [name_u]Dexter[/name_u]'s fine but doesn’t give me the same feeling as [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m], [name_m]Clement[/name_m], and [name_m]Winston[/name_m].

[name_m]Luther[/name_m] doesn’t quite work for me with that surname, I’m afraid, and [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] is borderline [name_m]OTT[/name_m] in my book even though it has a good vibe. I’m not sure that it’s inherently any wilder than [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] or [name_m]Clement[/name_m], but that’s the impression I get. I’m not particularly in favor of any of the rest.

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] comes to mind, and I love previous suggestions of [name_m]Bertram[/name_m], [name_m]Benedict[/name_m], and [name_m]Edmund[/name_m].

[name_u]August[/name_u], [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] and:

[name_m]Aldric[/name_m], [name_m]Caedmon[/name_m], [name_m]Calix[/name_m], [name_m]Cosmo[/name_m], [name_u]Elias[/name_u], [name_m]Evander[/name_m], [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_m]Giles[/name_m], [name_m]Inigo[/name_m], [name_m]Ivo[/name_m], [name_m]Jabez[/name_m], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], [name_m]Justus[/name_m], [name_m]Leander[/name_m], [name_m]Malachi[/name_m], [name_m]Matthias[/name_m], [name_m]Maxim[/name_m], [name_m]Milo[/name_m], [name_m]Pascal[/name_m], [name_m]Phineas[/name_m], [name_m]Roman[/name_m], [name_m]Simeon[/name_m], [name_m]Theophilus[/name_m], ([name_m]Ulysses[/name_m]), [name_m]Zebedee[/name_m]

I like the name [name_m]Cadmus[/name_m].

With [name_u]August[/name_u] & [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] my favorite from your list is [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]. I also like [name_m]Luther[/name_m] & [name_m]Winston[/name_m].

The first names I thought of for your were [name_m]Walter[/name_m], [name_m]Walden[/name_m], [name_m]Warren[/name_m], [name_m]Linus[/name_m], [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] or [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_m]Edward[/name_m], & [name_m]Forrest[/name_m].
