I love names that you don’t hear every day. Our little boy is expected in [name]October[/name] and the only name we can come up with is *[name]Layton[/name].
I used to really dislike this name, but I am starting to come to like it because it’s simply less heard than others we had considered such as [name]Samuel[/name] and [name]Caleb[/name]. Most people argue that “classic” names are better, and I usually agree, but have come to like more unusual ones now that we are actually naming a real baby.
So, what do you think of this list in case we do not use [name]Layton[/name]? Can you help me find a good middle ground between cool/unusual/trendy and stuffy/boring/expected.?
Names I like…

[name]Norton[/name]
[name]Ivan[/name]
[name]Walden[/name]
[name]Walter[/name]/[name]Walt[/name]
[name]Jethro[/name]
[name]Abbott[/name] - I like, different but not too out there, nn [name]Abe[/name]
Adler - I’d prefer Alder
Aidric - I don’t like the Aid beginning, [name]Aldric[/name]? I like that [name]Rick[/name] could be a nn
[name]Alden[/name] - meh, [name]Holden[/name]?
[name]August[/name] - this one sounds feminine to me, though I know it’s well loved and I like [name]Gus[/name]!
[name]Blaine[/name] - I’m not fond of this–gives me a Blank feel
[name]Caedmon[/name] - wow, I really like this! I’m surprised because it’s not my style, but you could use [name]Cade[/name] or [name]Damon[/name]
[name]Calix[/name] - this is a little [name]Star[/name] Trek to me
[name]Clark[/name] - this is definitely one that’s rare but ‘normal’. It’s not my favorite but it’s nice
[name]Cooper[/name] - I’ve never liked this as a fn, what about [name]Casper[/name] or [name]Calvin[/name]
[name]Corbin[/name] - I’ve always like this one, though it’s a bit on the different side nn [name]Cory[/name]
[name]Daniel[/name] - if you don’t want traditional I’d steer away from this, it’s about as plain and normal as you can get
[name]Dean[/name] - not a bad choice. Has the [name]Aiden[/name] vibe but more manly and unique.
[name]Edgar[/name] - very traditional but uncommon, it’s okay
[name]Egan[/name] - too like Eager to me, I prefer [name]Ethan[/name]
[name]Grant[/name] - I like this one, it’s rather simple
[name]Harlan[/name] - I like this one, nn [name]Harry[/name] or [name]Harley[/name]
[name]Layton[/name] - I don’t really like this one
[name]Leon[/name] - I prefer [name]Leo[/name], [name]Leon[/name] feels a bit weak to me
[name]Porter[/name] - again, not fond of surnames
[name]Samuel[/name] - I like, very traditional but not super common, I love [name]Sam[/name]
[name]Sebastian[/name] - okay, very specialized in my mind. I can’t imagine a blond country boy with this name, but it’s nice enough
[name]Silas[/name] - I love [name]Silas[/name]! [name]Unique[/name] but traditional! [name]Titus[/name]? [name]Jude[/name]?
[name]Simon[/name] - not fond.
[name]Soren[/name] - bit too [name]Lord[/name] of the Rings for me
[name]Theodore[/name] - love [name]Theo[/name]
[name]Tiernan[/name] - sorry, bit too weird for me, [name]Kieran[/name]?
[name]Waylon[/name] - meh, don’t like
I find [name]Layton[/name] is going to the girls (unfortunate) - however I’m seeing them spell it [name]Leighton[/name]. I like [name]Corbin[/name] from your list, silas, and clark. I don’t understand [name]Porter[/name] - as its a person who carries luggage.
Thank you for the suggestions. I had chosen [name]Blaine[/name] as the middle name if we go with [name]Layton[/name]. There is no significance to it other than being the name my husband will not give up on. It doesn’t really bother me that it’s used for girls too, as I have seen it spelled [name]Leighton[/name] more often in that case, but I see your point.
His other favorite was [name]Waylon[/name], which is why it was on the list, but I am afraid it sounds too much like a “wailing wolf” since our surname is pron. like wolf. I think this one is definitely off the table. Does [name]Waylon[/name] [name]Wolf[/name] sounds bizarre?
As for the others, I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]August[/name] but again with “wolf” is it too wordy?
[name]Leo[/name] is the same, wouldn’t want to sound silly with [name]Leo[/name] (lion) wolf, although I do love that name too.
We just seem to run into a lot of trouble in finding the perfect one. [name]Corbin[/name] was another one we couldn’t agree on although I love it, as well as [name]Blaine[/name]. We also agree on [name]Samuel[/name], but I don’t care for [name]Sam[/name] or [name]Sammy[/name] nicknames. I keep coming back to [name]Layton[/name] to be done with trying to name him! I really like [name]Layton[/name] [name]Blaine[/name], BUT I am bothered that we get a thumbs down on the name [name]Layton[/name] all the time, even though I am coming to like it. What does it make you think of? Does it just give a bad vibe or do you think it’s one of those names that will become popular and so people assume it’s very trendy?
These are the names I like best:
[name]August[/name]
[name]Clark[/name]
[name]Corbin[/name]
[name]Dean[/name]
[name]Grant[/name]
[name]Leon[/name]
Good luck!!

[name]Theodore[/name]
I like [name]Layton[/name] [name]Blaine[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Peyton[/name]?
I wouldn’t worry too much about [name]Leighton[/name]. Most pronounce it lee-ton thanks to the [name]Ashleigh[/name]/[name]Bayleigh[/name]/[name]Kayleigh[/name] trend
My faves from the list: [name]Abbott[/name], [name]August[/name], [name]Cooper[/name], and [name]Porter[/name]
[name]Leo[/name] [name]Wolf[/name] or [name]Theo[/name] [name]Wolf[/name] are cute. And for a boy, “lion wolf” is a pretty awesome name.
Keep: [name]Alden[/name], [name]August[/name], [name]Cooper[/name], [name]Corbin[/name], [name]Daniel[/name], [name]Edgar[/name], [name]Harlan[/name], [name]Leon[/name] ([name]LOVE[/name]), [name]Sebastian[/name], [name]Silas[/name] ([name]LOVE[/name]), [name]Theodore[/name] ([name]LOVE[/name]) and [name]Waylon[/name] (b/c it is similar to my brother’s name. )
Not the biggest fan of [name]Layton[/name], i don’t know why, it just doesn’t sound that good to me
My favs:
- [name]August[/name]
- [name]Theodore[/name]
- [name]Leon[/name]
- [name]Calix[/name]
- [name]Soren[/name]
They’re also less heard of, and excellent choices, imho

[name]Layton[/name] - I prefer the original [name]Leighton[/name] instead of the phonetic [name]Layton[/name]. I would try to avoid any name with “lay” in it. I’ve also seen [name]Lleyton[/name]. [name]Leighton[/name] IS still a [name]MALE[/name] name and no it hasn’t completely gone to the girls, Last year in the US, [name]Leighton[/name] was No# 526 (545 girls) and No# 920 (217 boys). The [name]Layton[/name] spelling was No# 624 (375 boys). Still relatively rare for both genders.
