I’m pregnant with baby number 2, another boy. We named our first son [name_m]Colin[/name_m] [name_m]Reginald[/name_m], a name I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] and knew I wanted the moment I found out we were expecting a boy. I called him [name_m]Colin[/name_m] while still carrying him, and trying to convince my husband to go for it.
Clearly, his name is very Anglo. And I skew toward liking traditional English names (but not overtly common); however I am Hispanic and now want my second son to have name that my Spanish-speaking family can easily say and one that “goes” with very English, [name_m]Colin[/name_m]. But I don’t want anything “too” Spanish, i.e. [name_m]Carlos[/name_m], [name_m]Miguel[/name_m], [name_m]Diego[/name_m], etc.
My love for [name_m]Damian[/name_m] is that it bridges the Spanish/English divide perfectly. It is another preppy English name, in my opinion, that goes well with [name_m]Colin[/name_m] but it is a legitimately Spanish name. Spelling would stay the same, albeit with an accent on the “i”. BUT my husband strongly vetoes the name due to The Omen. I can’t shake the feeling that this is my son’s name, but I need to see other alternatives and the ones I come up with are leaving me feeling lackluster.
Names that would fit the bill but I cannot use due to family/friends are: [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Isaac[/name_m], [name_m]Dominic[/name_m], [name_m]Julian[/name_m], [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]David[/name_m], Oliver, Alex.
Any suggestions that would capture the magic that I find in [name_m]Damian[/name_m]? I suggested [name_m]Felix[/name_m] and [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] to my husband, who has also said no. Ugh. Not sure if I should just wear him down with [name_m]Damian[/name_m] or if there is a name out there that is just as special that I haven’t found?
I don’t know if you’ll be able to work past the “bad omen” mentality unfortunately. Maybe try…
[name_u]Darian[/name_u] or [name_u]Dorian[/name_u]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u]
[name_m]Donovan[/name_m]
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m] or [name_m]Xander[/name_m]/[name_m]Zander[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m]
[name_m]Solomon[/name_m]
[name_m]Jonah[/name_m]
[name_f]IMO[/name_f] it is important that you both love your child’s name, or at least like it a lot so I would really work together to find something that both of you are happy with. Try to put yourself in his position where he is adamant that you choose a name that you do not want. Maybe try each of you making a list of names that you would be okay with and see if there are some similarities. [name_m]Colin[/name_m] and…
I definitely agree with the previous suggestions of [name_m]Victor[/name_m], [name_m]Rafael[/name_m], [name_m]Simon[/name_m], and [name_m]Marcos[/name_m].
I also like:
[name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m] - perhaps a bit out there next to [name_m]Colin[/name_m] but it shares a lot of [name_m]Damian[/name_m]'s sounds while fitting seamlessly in two cultures
[name_m]Vidal[/name_m] - Anglo via Sassoon but Hispanic to the core
[name_m]Antony[/name_m] - feels more Spanish than [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] and more English than [name_m]Antonio[/name_m]
[name_m]Josep[/name_m] - the nn Pep feels especially [name_m]Pip[/name_m]
[name_m]Cesar[/name_m] or [name_m]Caesar[/name_m] - Classic fit in either cultural setting
[name_m]Bruno[/name_m] - same
[name_m]Guillem[/name_m] - can be pronounced [name_m]Willem[/name_m] in English-speaking settings… which would sound so cute with [name_m]Colin[/name_m].
Vincente - reminds me of [name_m]Reginald[/name_m] for some reason
[name_m]Enric[/name_m] - more Spanish than Elric or [name_m]Erick[/name_m], but more Anglo than [name_m]Enrique[/name_m].
I think [name_m]Colin[/name_m] and [name_m]Bruno[/name_m] would be adorable!! That’s my top choice.
I like [name_m]Damian[/name_m] too, but my SO has also said he isn’t a fan.
Perhaps:
[name_m]Aaron[/name_m] - reminds me of [name_m]Isaac[/name_m], in the sense that they are biblical and work well, albeit differently, in both languages
[name_m]Vicente[/name_m]
[name_m]Joaquin[/name_m]
[name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] - feels in the same arena as [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucas[/name_m] - reminds me stylistically of [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]
[name_m]Daniel[/name_m] - a substitute for [name_m]David[/name_m]?
[name_u]Andre[/name_u]
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_m]Anselmo[/name_m] - this one is out there next to [name_m]Colin[/name_m], but doesn’t scream Spanish while being a Spanish name
[name_m]Rafael[/name_m]
[name_u]Elias[/name_u]
I think [name_m]Aaron[/name_m] really hits the sweet spot for you. It is both a legitimately English- and Spanish-language name (admittedly with an accent in Spanish) and it matches well with [name_m]Colin[/name_m]. I admit that it is fairly popular, but so it [name_m]Colin[/name_m], so I don’t think that is too big a drawback.
