Help me get to Abe!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] guys,

I love the nickname “[name_m]Abe[/name_m]” for a baby boy. This is our second child and second boy, and we are struggling with a name. I really like [name_m]Abel[/name_m], nn [name_m]Abe[/name_m], but my husband is concerned about the association with [name_m]Cain[/name_m] and [name_m]Abel[/name_m] (and [name_m]Abel[/name_m]'s unfortunate demise). Now it’s gotten in my head that it might be strange to name a boy [name_m]Abel[/name_m], especially when he has a brother. [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] seems a little weighty, and not sure I love [name_m]Abram[/name_m]. Any other creative ideas of how we could get to [name_m]Abe[/name_m]? I would be willing to just use the nickname as the name but my husband is opposed.

I also would be interested to hear thoughts on the nickname “[name_m]Ike[/name_m]” for [name_m]Isaac[/name_m], and the name [name_u]Neal[/name_u] for a boy.

Feedback is appreciated!

Thanks!

Ooh, I love [name_m]Ike[/name_m] for [name_m]Isaac[/name_m]! That’s my favourite of your options, although [name_u]Neal[/name_u] and [name_m]Abe[/name_m] are cool too.

Similar retro nicknames might be [name_u]Gus[/name_u], [name_m]Gil[/name_m], [name_m]Ned[/name_m], [name_u]Whit[/name_u], [name_m]Art[/name_m], [name_u]Ray[/name_u], [name_u]Van[/name_u]…

For [name_m]Abe[/name_m], how about [name_m]Cabell[/name_m], [name_m]Gable[/name_m], [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], [name_m]Fabian[/name_m] or [name_m]Faber[/name_m]?

Hey there! I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Ike[/name_m]/[name_m]Isaac[/name_m]. [name_u]Neal[/name_u], I’m not so wild about. Other possible long forms to get you to [name_m]Abe[/name_m]:
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] (this is “the name that got away” for our firstborn, and [name_m]Abe[/name_m] was the only nn we could come up with for it),
[name_u]Abijah[/name_u] (just learned this name from an old Western novel and think it’s neat),
[name_m]Albert[/name_m] ([name_m]Albie[/name_m] leads to [name_u]Abbie[/name_u] leads to [name_m]Abe[/name_m]),
all a stretch but I think they work!

Not a fan of [name_u]Neal[/name_u], I think it’s still too dated. [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] nn [name_m]Ike[/name_m] is cool, though I much prefer the softer [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m]. Of your options, my favorite is definitely [name_m]Abe[/name_m]! [name_m]Abram[/name_m] seems the best way to get there, but I also like @katinka’s suggestions of [name_m]Gable[/name_m] and [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m].

[name_m]Abiel[/name_m] or [name_m]Abner[/name_m] could get you to [name_m]Abe[/name_m] too I think.

I love [name_m]Abel[/name_m]! And I do not immediately think of the biblical story. I’ve known a few people named [name_m]Abel[/name_m] and it really suits them. Some other suggestions:
[name_u]Abbott[/name_u]
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]
[name_m]Jacob[/name_m] (it’s a stretch)

[name_m]Abraham[/name_m] is a beautiful name, and I think it would quickly become “his.” I love the name [name_m]Abe[/name_m]. You could also use the name [name_u]Abbott[/name_u], nn [name_m]Abe[/name_m].
I’m also fond of [name_m]Ike[/name_m] as a nickname for [name_m]Issac[/name_m].
[name_u]Neal[/name_u] is not as distinctive, somehow.

I have an ike!
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m] nn ike

We use the names interchangeably.
I like it and so does he

I like the nickname [name_m]Abe[/name_m]
I prefer [name_m]Abraham[/name_m]

FWIW, I learned at dinner with a friend that another friend had just had her baby, and named him [name_m]Abel[/name_m]! You’re not alone in your appreciation of it! Too funny, the new baby’s middle name is another of your favorites!

[name_m]Ike[/name_m] is a long-established nickname for [name_m]Isaac[/name_m], so of course that works. I love [name_m]Abel[/name_m] and would encourage you to give it a chance. [name_m]Fabian[/name_m] is a great suggestion too. I’d love to see that one more often.

I know 2 [name_m]Abel[/name_m]'s and don’t automatically think of [name_m]Cain[/name_m] and [name_m]Abel[/name_m], so I think [name_m]Abel[/name_m] is fine! Otherwise, I second [name_m]Gable[/name_m] and [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], and I like [name_m]Abram[/name_m].

I think [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] nn [name_m]Ike[/name_m] is fine, though dated. [name_u]Neal[/name_u] looks like “seal” to me, so I would spell it [name_u]Neil[/name_u].
