so i’ve realized that I could use any mary name/diminutive as an honor for someone important in my life, and this was exciting, because there are do many names that come from mary !!
however, that excitement wore off as I realized that I don’t really like… any of them ??
of course, I’m sure I’ve missed a whole ton, though !! so if you could just post your very favorite variations of mary (diminutives, forms from other cultures/languages, double barrels even) that would be very much appreciated !!
[name_f]Moira[/name_f] is so sweet and spunky compared to most of the [name_f]Mary[/name_f] subset. I love that the meaning also coincides with “destiny” as in the Fates.
[name_f]Marjo[/name_f] and [name_f]Maryam[/name_f] are the others I like. Everything else can stay out of my favor, though I do always enjoy meeting a little [name_f]Mary[/name_f].
moira and marjo are sweet and interesting !! yet to tell if they are my vibe, but thank you very much for commenting– I didn’t know about either one !!
My favourite Mary/Maria variants tend to be diminutives! Also, this is just using BehindTheName, sorry if any of it is wrong. I’m certainly no expert!
Manon -
Beautiful, sleek, and stylish. I had a major name crush on Manon at one point, and I still do love it. A French variation.
Mariska -
This is actually pronounced sort of like Marishka, and I love it! It’s mysterious, gorgeous,
Mitzi -
diminutive of Maria. Just so fun! I love it’s spiky sound.
Maricela -
how gorgeous is Maricela? It’s pretty, lively, and reminds me of a golden sun!
Mieke -
another diminutive, but I love how youthful and vibrant it feels.
Marisha -
I’m pretty sure this is a variant of Mary? It has its roots as a Russian diminutive of Marina, but also as a name in Hindu mythology. From what I can find it may have derived from ‘Maris’. One of my favourites!
There’s so many variants! Some others I like: Marianne, Maja, Mia, Malle
There’s something about [name_f]Mary[/name_f], I dunno it’s just nice.
I mean you Maria’s, and [name_f]Maya[/name_f], and Masha’s and they’re all fine too.
As are [name_f]Marita[/name_f], [name_f]Marissa[/name_f], and [name_f]Mariette[/name_f].
Then your classic pairs: [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_u]Louise[/name_u],
Mary-Jane, Mary-Alice, [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_u]Kay[/name_u], and the classical catholic [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
My favorite is Polly! But I know nickname names aren’t really your style. I also really like Marianne and Maria pronounced muh-rye-uh. I second Manon as well.
I love [name_u]Marian[/name_u] and [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] and like [name_f]Meara[/name_f], [name_u]Marin[/name_u], [name_f]Marina[/name_f], and [name_f]Mariana[/name_f] (Mari).
I really like Maren, it kind of makes me think of a pretty maiden in a small village who goes on a big adventure. It’s strong but also delicate somehow? Old but new, simple but rare.
Marilyn for obvious reasons. So glamorous and enthralling!
I also like Marion, it’s so romantic. Maristela is also exquisite with an equally beautiful meaning - star of the sea
