Help me love Mabel

[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] is vintage and vintage is in. That being said, I learnt long ago I can’t force myself to love a name even if others do. Never say never, but if he’s liked it all these years and it still hasn’t grown on you I doubt it will by [name_u]August[/name_u]. You could move it to the middle spot. Or maybe look to see if international variations are more appealing. Then there is always the idea of modernizing it. maple, mabyn, fable or sable might feel fresher to you. Good luck

I don’t love [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], but I think it is a fine name and I really do like the nn [name_f]May[/name_f]/[name_f]Mae[/name_f]. [name_f]Belle[/name_f] is nice nickname too, and I really do like [name_f]Amabel[/name_f]. I think it could work if it is meaningful to your family and you find a nickname or variation you love.

[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] is an amazing name!

  1. My beloved great grandmother’s middle name ([name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]).
  2. Loved it so much I used it for my boxer/Rhodesian/pit’s middle name, [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] [name_f]Mabel[/name_f].
  3. Named my first solo living duplex [name_f]Mabel[/name_f].
  4. It sounds like [name_f]Maple[/name_f] which is lovely. Would he go for [name_f]Maple[/name_f] instead?
  5. It is old-fashioned and nostalgic yet I do find it spunky and charming. Look up some old silent film actors with that name.
  6. There is something comforting and contained about it - nice consonants at beginning, middle, and end.
  7. What about [name_f]Amabel[/name_f], nn [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]? [name_u]Love[/name_u] that one too and it seems modern too in that it suggests [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] etc.

I used the feel the same way about [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] as you do, but at some point, I don’t even know when it was, I did a turnaround, and now love it!

I imagine [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] to be a cute, smart, spunky and clever kid; a creative and thoughtful young adult, and driven, motivated, and charming grown-up.

She won’t have the same name as everyone in her class, and the fact that she’s named for her great-grandmother gives her the extra power to her name-identity.

What an awesome name to ‘be stuck’ giving

Personally, I’m not a fan of [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] either. It’s a very hipster name that gives off a sugary-sweet vibe (probably because it’s so close to [name_f]Maple[/name_f]) that just doesn’t appeal to me. I do know a little girl named [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] though and I don’t think her parents have had any negative reactions to her name.

That being said, you shouldn’t have to find a reason to love a name. Either you do or you don’t and if you don’t like [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], then you don’t like [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]. I agree with other posters that the middle name spot would probably be the best way to go with this one. Or did Grandma [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] have a middle name that you could use instead?

[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] from [name_f]Gravity[/name_f] Falls (Disney cartoon) is a wonderful character!

I know an adorable blonde hair blue eyes 6 year old [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] who suits the name every well

If you’d like to see something heart warming and adorable, a little [name_f]Mable[/name_f] captured the heart of my city a few years ago, google Edmonton SpiderMable, it’s the sweetest thing.

What about

[name_f]Maybelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Maya[/name_f]/[name_f]Maia[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f]

X

I actually love it.
I don’t adore my daughter’s middle name ([name_f]Dawn[/name_f]) but it meant a lot to my husband because it’s a nod to his grandfather, [name_m]Don[/name_m]. The honor and joy he drew from giving our daughter that name and informing his grandma of the tribute of her late husband made it entirely worth it. I agree with the other posters that said maybe to work it in as a middle instead?

pumpkin, I have to admit that I’m with you on [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]. It’s one of those old-lady names that has made a comeback and I feel I’m supposed to love… but just think it’s a tad harsh. But I love the suggestion of [name_f]Amabel[/name_f]. It completely incorporates [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] but the pronunciation is much softer and the meaning–lovable–is heartwarming.

Look up The Enchanted Castle by [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_m]Nesbitt[/name_m]! It’s a very old children’s fantasy novel, and I don’t remember the story all that well, but one of the main characters (a little girl) is named [name_f]Mabel[/name_f].

I agree with others that finding other connections with the name may make you feel better. I think [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] is very sweet and definitely wearable for a child of the next generation. I did also like the suggestion of [name_f]Amabel[/name_f], if that’s a name you can get behind more easily.

Look up The Enchanted Castle by [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_m]Nesbitt[/name_m] (this is the second time I’m bringing up this book, oddly)! So, [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] is a name I adore but can’t use for personal reasons. But I will say this : there was a girl in the grade behind me that everyone agreed was absolutely gorgeous, totally brilliant, and was just absolutely as sweet and kind as could be, and her name was [name_f]Mabel[/name_f].

My husband also named one of his guitars [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], not that that means anything. Well, I mean, it is a beautiful guitar…

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] that helps!

I don’t think trying to love the name will result in happiness on your part.
I think choosing [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] without loving or really liking it should be the last option in case there really isn’t another name you both end up liking a lot and it could always be a middle name!

FWIW, there’s a lady on instagram (@victoriaropercurzon) who has a little [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] who’s super sweet and may shed a new light in the name (less grumpy more lovely vintage).

I love [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] and have never thought of it as an old or frumpy name. In fact, when I was younger I thought it was a modern name, and was shocked when my dad said my great-grandmother was named [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]. It reminded me of [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f], both of which I found to be more modern names since I only knew younger kids with the names, even though they’ve been around for a long time. The only [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] I’ve ever known (is actually a [name_f]Maebel[/name_f] but it’s said the same) is probably 15 or 16 at this point, I haven’t heard from her since we were in elementary school.

The name reminds me of [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] Pines from [name_f]Gravity[/name_f] Falls who is a sweet little character. She actually helped me to appreciate the name again, since the [name_f]Maebel[/name_f] I knew was a bit of a brat. [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] Pines is silly, sweet, and funny. I would love to name a daughter [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] one day.

Thanks everyone so much! I think [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] is actually starting to grow on me which I didn’t think was possible! If we go with [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], her full name will probably be [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], after both her grandmothers.

I don’t have any [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] story, but I’m suggesting [name_f]Amabel[/name_f] if you’re still not sure. Very similar name and has such a lovely meaning.

[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] is the cutest thing ever, I love it.
