Over the weekend I had a bit of inspiration for a story, and I very nearly have one of my main characters–a Viking–named, but I need a little help making the final decision, as both seem quite perfect to me! After researching some Old Norse names, these two are my favorite, both for their retained-Viking feel, but also for their accessibility for a general audience (hopefully!), and how well they suit my character.
My character is probably in his late 20s, the oldest son to the younger brother of the clan leader/chief/etc. (obviously, I have lots of research yet to do on Viking culture itself!), so he’ll probably never rule their clan, but he does have royal blood and is probably treated very well because of it. He’s a warrior and quite a good one, although he’s always been a bit of a loner and sometimes feels that he doesn’t feel like a very integral or important part of his clan (I’ve toyed with the idea of him having been born out of wedlock, and thus made to feel an outcast for that reason, though his family includes him, but I’ve not yet been able to research whether that would’ve happened in Viking culture, or, really, if it’s a direction I want to go, but we may yet go there), though he prizes family above just about all else. He’s definitely on the quiet/stoic/reserved side, socially, but can also be a bit demanding/entitled, but also has a bit of a gentler side, as well.
I’m down to either [name_m]Audun[/name_m] or Brynjar for him. Does one seem to fit above the other?
Initially, I’d liked Asger for him–he ends up displaced in modern-day [name_u]London[/name_u], and very out-of-sorts, and an instant social media sensation–so I loved the idea of a conversation that went something like: “Asger.” “[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]?” “Assss-gaaaaaar.” “Oh, so [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]!” lol. But Asger just doesn’t seem to suit him quite so well as [name_m]Audun[/name_m] and Brynjar do to me, so I’ve cut it from the list of possibilities.
If it helps, he’ll have a little sister whom he is very close to, who I’ve been thinking about naming [name_f]Siri[/name_f], although I’m not 100%, because of, well, [name_f]Siri[/name_f].
