I need a name for my MC’s aunt. The story takes place in the South during the 1910s, and “Aunt” is in her late 30s. She and her husband were never able to have children except for one, a son, who died in infancy. As a result she’s a very bitter woman. I imagine “Aunt” with dark hair, gray eyes, and very petite. She’s rather controlling and can have quite a sharp tongue. “Aunt” does have a softer side, but it’s rarely seen. If this helps you, the color I see when I envision her is crimson. What should her name be?
[name]Maude[/name].
First [name]Maria[/name] came to mind, then [name]Marina[/name], then [name]Madison[/name], then [name]Maude[/name].
Now [name]Muriel[/name] has come to mind as well.
[name]Dorothy[/name] nicknamed [name]Dory[/name], probably because I have a character with similar traits but her full name is [name]Dorcas[/name] instead!
Aunt [name]Opal[/name] immediately came to mind.
I instantly saw a [name]Myrtle[/name] in your description or maybe a [name]Hortense[/name] nn Tensie.
Hmm, good suggestions. I perused the top 100 of 1880 as well, and I have it narrowed down to these possibilities:
[name]Bertha[/name]
[name]Myrtle[/name]
[name]Edna[/name]
[name]Blanche[/name]
[name]Viola[/name]
Also, an addition question. I have one little girl whose name is [name]Gertrude[/name] but goes by [name]Trudy[/name] or… would you spell it [name]Tru[/name] or [name]True[/name]?
For the character described I think that [name]Bertha[/name] or [name]Edna[/name] would suit her very well- [name]Bertha[/name] being my preference. For the little girl named [name]Gertrude[/name]/[name]Trudy[/name] I think it would be spelled [name]Tru[/name].
[name]Hope[/name] that helps! Good luck with your writing!
- [name]Athena[/name]
[name]Bertha[/name] is a great idea for her.
In my experience, [name]Tru[/name] is the proper spelling for the nickname.
I’ve decided on Aunt [name]Bertha[/name]. I feel something of a name nerdy joy in using [name]Bertha[/name]. :geek:
Thanks everyone!
