Help me name my villains!

Hiya, all.

In my new project (I’m determined to stick with this one but I have a short attention span, so we’ll hope for the best) I’ve basically got an entire network of villains. They, obviously, have a leader, but his name is already figured out (Letholdus), so I need to name all of his lackeys. The names I’m going for are unusual and slightly old-fashioned, I suppose (nothing modern). I’m estimating for about seven high-status lackeys, at the mo’. They each control their own area, have their own army, etc. I have the personalities for about four right now.

The first is a light-haired man in his early thirties, to be introduced – and defeated – in the first book. He is very handsome and considered very masculine. He is often battle-hungry but thinks out every move to the detail (is not foolish or impulsive), making him difficult to surprise. He also has a desire to overtake Letholdus as the leader. I considered calling him [name_m]Alvar[/name_m].

The second is Letholdus’ madman. He has light brown hair that falls past his elbows and is very thin with blue eyes. He often talks in rhymes and loves to antagonize his victims while torturing them, often tricking them to create the biggest impact. He prefers to pick off people on-by-one rather than go to war, often having his victims kill each other themselves. He is very eccentric. However, he is very paranoid and eventually kills himself to avoid being tortured and inevitably killed at the hands of Letholdus for making a – admittedly very big – mistake. I considered calling him Alverod or Abaddon.

The third is Letholdus’ second-in-command. It’s a woman with dark hair and eyes, and is beautiful in a deranged sort of way and very intimidating. She’s also mad (her head isn’t all there), and a cannibal (pleasant, I know). She wears old clothing (a long black dress and corset) and an excessive amount of – messily applied – dark make-up. Her weapon of choice is an enchanted dagger. I haven’t considered any names for her as of yet.

The fourth is a man the epitome of calm and calculated. He has light blond hair worn in a ponytail and aristocratic facial features. He is always perfectly composed and prepared to do any sort of messy deed necessary to get the job done. However, he does no longer support Letholdus because while at the beginning of his reign Letholdus was smart in his attempts to rule the world (which he fully agreed with and supported), he is now blood-hungry and reckless. But, he can not leave because he and his family will then be killed. He is killed at the end of the series in his attempt to help the protagonists dismantle Letholdus’ web (he served as a spy). I’ve considered [name_m]Septimus[/name_m], [name_m]Calix[/name_m], [name_m]Cadmus[/name_m] and Beauregard.

If you could suggest names along those lines, both for girls and boys, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

1: Hmm, [name_m]Alvar[/name_m] sounds more like a hero name to me, but that could definitely work.
Some other names:
[name_u]Rhys[/name_u]
[name_m]Leopold[/name_m]
[name_m]Leonides[/name_m]
Ozymandias (or, [name_m]Ramses[/name_m]?)

2: I like Abaddon (the angel of death! the destroyer!), but perhaps you could use that for the first man? The meaning, anyway, fits better with him imo.
Some other names:
[name_m]Phineas[/name_m]
[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]
Garibaldi (or something more made up, like Caribald, Caribold, Garibeld…?)
Igneous (NN [name_m]Iggy[/name_m]?)
[name_m]Ephraim[/name_m]
[name_m]Isidore[/name_m]
[name_m]Talmadge[/name_m]

3: Her description reminded me of [name_f]Countess[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] Bathory; she was said to bathe in the blood of virgins because she thought it made her look younger. Maybe something inspired by that? Bathon? Bathony? Some twisted spelling of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (i.e., Eliztabath, Elisabat, [name_f]Lisabet[/name_f]?)
Some other names:
Vivicca
[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]
[name_f]Katerina[/name_f] (or other variations of [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], some are pretty enchanting)
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]
[name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f]
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f]
[name_f]Samara[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]

4: I love [name_m]Beauregard[/name_m], it sounds so aristocratic! But it does sounds more modern, I mean, not modern modern but I feel like it’s much more heard of than any of the other names you’ve listed. I also love [name_m]Septimus[/name_m] but considering the character, I think it’s far too close to [name_m]Severus[/name_m] (Snape. Killed at the end of the series while working as a spy?).
Some other names:
[name_m]Idris[/name_m]
[name_m]Tiberius[/name_m]
Malachite
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]
[name_m]Santiago[/name_m]
[name_m]Tremaine[/name_m]
[name_m]Vester[/name_m] ([name_u]Vesper[/name_u]?)

Note: Wow, finding old names for boys that aren’t becoming popular nowadays and also sound good for a villain is so hard. I tried, but just keep looking up names. Go as deep as you dare into google…or just start making stuff up. xP I also think some of these names could work for any of the above, I just listed in the ones I think would work BEST. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] they at least inspired some names for you.

@moosicorns – Thank you so much!

  1. Now that I think about it, Abaddon does make more sense on this man, and I understand what you mean about [name_m]Alvar[/name_m]. Maybe I’ll use it for another character (God knows I have plenty of those). I adore [name_m]Leonides[/name_m].

  2. I love your suggestions for 2! I really like [name_m]Phineas[/name_m] (do you think that could work on the first man?), Caribald, Igneous (maybe [name_m]Ignatius[/name_m]? Ignotus?), [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] and [name_m]Talmadge[/name_m].

  3. I love the idea of using Bathon or Bathony after [name_f]Countess[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] Bathory. I really like [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] and [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] too (not that I don’t love your other suggestions)!

  4. The connection to [name_m]Severus[/name_m] didn’t occur to me while writing his character so yeah, [name_m]Septimus[/name_m] is probably gone (maybe for another – not spy – character, though). I know what you mean about [name_m]Beauregard[/name_m], too. I love [name_m]Idris[/name_m], [name_m]Tremaine[/name_m] and [name_m]Vester[/name_m]!

Thanks for all your suggestions and advice! You’ve been a great help!

So glad you liked my suggestions! I think [name_m]Phineas[/name_m] could definitely work on the first man. And I can’t believe I forgot about [name_m]Ignatius[/name_m]! It’s less science and more magic than Igneous. Good luck with the story and hopefully a few more people will jump in with thoughts!
