Help me narrow from 19 to 12

I started with 26 names and have gotten down to 19. I’d like to get down to 12. I know I’ll need to narrow it down more later. My problem is that I worry that as soon as I take a name off that it might have been " the one". Anyway, here’s the list:

[name]Violet[/name]
[name]Nina[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Penny[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Karina[/name]
Lydia
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Alina[/name]
[name]Alaina[/name]
[name]Victoria[/name]
[name]Vivian[/name]
[name]Vienna[/name]/[name]Sienna[/name]
[name]Winter[/name]
[name]Sadie[/name]
[name]Heidi[/name]
[name]Nadia[/name]

MN will be [name]Carol[/name] or [name]Caroline[/name]. LN is Mermer.
Thanks!

And in case it matters, our DS is [name]Julian[/name] [name]James[/name].

I would remove Nina & Penny from your list. They are cute as nicknames, but I think a child needs a more substantial name to grow up with. I would also remove Nadia. It’s pretty, but dated, imo (although NB seems to disagree with me  ). All the Nadias I know are my age -so it’s a mommy name to me. Alina and Alaina are too similar -you could never use both in a sibset, so you could remove one of those. I prefer Alaina.

My favourites from your list are:
Violet
Phoebe
Felicity
Eliza and
Vivian

I hope you keep those ones!

I posted this before I saw that your DS is Julian. I don’t think Vivian works well with Julian due to the similar sounding end to the two names. Although I really like the name!

Oh gosh, I narrowed your list down to ten instead of twelve. I rated the names on their flow (mostly with your surname since the fn and ln are what most people are commonly called in real life). I had to eliminate some names that I love/like. [name]Violet[/name] Mermer is too similar to “violent murmur”, [name]Winter[/name] Mermer and [name]Victoria[/name] Mermer just don’t sound right.

Top Ten

[name]Nina[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Vivian[/name] - eliminated
[name]Sadie[/name]
[name]Nadia[/name]
[name]Alina[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Fiona[/name]

No to Julian and Vivian as they are too matchy! Now it’s nine names.

Ok, my favourites paired with [name]Carol[/name]/[name]Caroline[/name] are…

  • [name]Violet[/name]
  • [name]Victoria[/name]
  • [name]Vivian[/name]
  • [name]Ruby[/name]
  • [name]Fiona[/name]
  • [name]Felicity[/name]
  • [name]Sadie[/name]
  • [name]Heidi[/name]
  • [name]Sienna[/name]

I agree about [name]Victoria[/name] and [name]Nadia[/name], so I’ll take those out. I like [name]Violet[/name] and [name]Winter[/name] too much to take them off so quickly. We’ll see what the consensus is. I wouldn’t use both [name]Alaina[/name] and [name]Alina[/name] but can’t decide which I like better. I love both [name]Penny[/name] and [name]Nina[/name], but haven’t been able to come up with full names for [name]Penny[/name] that I like. What would [name]Nina[/name] be a nickname for?
Thanks for the help. We’re down to 17 already!

[name]Violet[/name] - alright, but a bit boring
[name]Nina[/name] - very boring. I’ve met soooo many.
[name]Phoebe[/name] - ok i guess. nothing really wrong with it.
[name]Felicity[/name] - dated
[name]Penny[/name] - nicknamey, which I don’t really mind, but what about [name]Penelope[/name] “[name]Penny[/name]”?
[name]Ruby[/name] - never liked it. dunno but [name]Ruby[/name] seems like a stripper name to me
[name]Fiona[/name] - Shrek’s wife
[name]Karina[/name] - sounds awful with the middle name
[name]Lydia[/name] - sounds like a boring and chubby kid with glasses
[name]Eliza[/name] - Sweet, spunky. Me like.
[name]Alina[/name] - like this one too
[name]Alaina[/name] - Nah
[name]Victoria[/name] - my middle name, but its soooo boring
[name]Vivian[/name] - prefer [name]Vivienne[/name]
[name]Vienna[/name]/[name]Sienna[/name] - I like [name]Sienna[/name]!
[name]Winter[/name] - nice!
[name]Sadie[/name] - yes as a nickname
[name]Heidi[/name] - not my cup of tea
[name]Nadia[/name] - same style as [name]Heidi[/name], but all I’ve met has been egoistic and unfriendly

Killromance, thanks for your honest opinion. I disagree about some things, but I think you’re right about [name]Karina[/name] and [name]Lydia[/name]. So I’ll take those out. Down to 15!

I actually agree about [name]Nadia[/name] too. I like it because I’m a gymnastics coach and obviously love [name]Nadia[/name] Comenici’s story, but I think it’s too clunky as [name]Nadia[/name] [name]Carol[/name]/[name]Caroline[/name] Mermer. So, now down to 14!

I would keep:
[name]Violet[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name] ([name]Love[/name] the meaning)
[name]Lydia[/name] (one of my favorites)
[name]Alaina[/name] (one of my favorites)
[name]Victoria[/name]
[name]Vivian[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Karina[/name]
[name]Vienna[/name]/[name]Sienna[/name] (I much prefer [name]Sienna[/name], unless you have a personal link to [name]Vienna[/name])
[name]Heidi[/name]
[name]Nadia[/name]

I would cut:
[name]Penny[/name] (I like it, but it seems too nicknamy for a first name.)
[name]Alina[/name] (I like [name]Alaina[/name] better.)
[name]Sadie[/name] (Not my cup of tea. I knew mentally handicapped women named [name]Sadie[/name] who was extremely unpleasant and it ruined it forever.)
[name]Nina[/name] (Nice name, but I like a lot of your other name choices better.)
[name]Fiona[/name] ([name]Lovely[/name] name, but reminds me of Shrek.)
[name]Winter[/name] (I love [name]Winter[/name], but more as a middle name.)
[name]Eliza[/name] (Sorry, this name gets a lot of love, but I prefer [name]Elizabeth[/name]. [name]Eliza[/name] seems like her poor cousin.)

I don’t think [name]Nina[/name] needs a full name, all the Ninas I’ve known have been just [name]Nina[/name]. With the surname Mermer, which sounds like murmur, I’d leave off anything that sounds wordy as it just wouldn’t work - [name]Violet[/name], [name]Penny[/name], [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Winter[/name] and [name]Vienna[/name]/[name]Sienna[/name]. [name]Vivian[/name] also endds in the same sounds as [name]Julian[/name], so I’d leave that off for being pretty close.

Then I’d remove a couple due to personal preference - not a fan of [name]Felicity[/name], [name]Alina[/name] or [name]Alaina[/name] (though I do like it as [name]Elena[/name]) would leave me with a top 10 of:

[name]Nina[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Karina[/name]
[name]Lydia[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Victoria[/name]
[name]Sadie[/name]
[name]Heidi[/name]
[name]Nadia[/name]

Out of those, my favourites are [name]Lydia[/name] and [name]Phoebe[/name], followed by [name]Heidi[/name] and [name]Nina[/name]. Any of those would pair with [name]Carol[/name] or [name]Caroline[/name] as middles.

Agree that [name]Vivian[/name] is too close to [name]Julian[/name] so I’ll take that off. Agree that [name]Penny[/name] is to much of a nickname. I see the argument of [name]Violet[/name], [name]Winter[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name] being word names and therefore not working with Mermer, but I still can’t take them off yet.

So now we’re down to:

[name]Violet[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Nina[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Winter[/name]
[name]Sadie[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Alina[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Alaina[/name]

That’s 11, but keep the opinions coming. The more I can cut the better.

Nice job cutting the list. I would agree essjay that with your last name, noun names should go, but if you want to keep them, here are my opinions:

[name]Violet[/name] – super popular right now. is that a concern?
[name]Felicity[/name] – Very sweet name. would she go by a nickname?
[name]Nina[/name] – while i like the name, im not a fan of having the double “n” sound in the fn and the double “m” sound in the ln.
[name]Phoebe[/name] – will forever be the name on Friends for me.
[name]Fiona[/name] – i think its very sweet and has similar letters to julian for a nice sib set pair. I would go with [name]Fiona[/name] [name]Caroline[/name].
[name]Winter[/name] – Not a fan, winter carol sounds a bit to christmas literal for me.
[name]Sadie[/name] – too nicknamed for my taste as a first name.
[name]Ruby[/name] – sweet and a bit nicknamey. julian and ruby have a british vibe to it.
[name]Alina[/name] – For me it sounds like" i lean a"… which im not a fan.
[name]Eliza[/name] – very cute but i feel like this name is climbing the popularity charts.
[name]Alaina[/name] – whats your pronunciation for this name?

Ooh fun!

X [name]Violet[/name] - remove because less popular options are listed here, that retain the same beauty  [name]Violet[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] Mermer is pretty though.
[name]Nina[/name]- Keep it on. Sweet, simple, and lovely with your LN
[name]Phoebe[/name]- Ditto [name]Nina[/name]!
[name]Felicity[/name]- Top of the tops! So lovely and intriguing and underused. [name]Love[/name] the variation of syllable for an overall combo too!
[name]Penny[/name]- Fun but doesn’t have quite as much depth as an individual name, as some of your others. The combo [name]Penny[/name] Mermer does sound like a storybook character though!
XRuby- Too predictable in comparison with others.
[name]Fiona[/name]- [name]Love[/name] it! [name]Fiona[/name] [name]Carol[/name] Mermer is great!
[name]Karina[/name]- A personal favorite. Keep it on!
[name]Lydia[/name]- [name]Don[/name]'t eliminate yet!
XEliza- The whole E- thing ([name]Emma[/name], [name]Emily[/name], [name]Ella[/name]), overkill of [name]Elizabeth[/name], the onslaught of Ellies, Emmys, Lizzies, etc. Strike it.
X [name]Alina[/name]- Awkward when compared to others on your list.
X [name]Alaina[/name]- Ditto [name]Alina[/name]. Would prefer [name]Elaina[/name] but then I would say what I said about [name]Eliza[/name], so nah.
XVictoria- What a beauty. And somewhat unpredictable at the moment…but I think there are other names on the list that are simply fresher.
X [name]Vivian[/name]- The IT name of the moment.
XVienna/[name]Sienna[/name]- Has a trendy feel in comparison to others.
XWinter - I love the name but it isn’t the best with your last name (repeating -er sounds)…
[name]Sadie[/name]- Sweet name. There are…stronger names on your list but maybe don’t remove just yet…
XHeidi- I love that it is unexpected but stylistically I don’t think it fits your taste, in the long run, as well.
[name]Nadia[/name]- Yes! Fabulous.

MN will be [name]Carol[/name] or [name]Caroline[/name]. LN is Mermer.

[name]Violet[/name]
[name]Phoebe [/name]
[name]Felicity [/name]
[name]Ruby [/name]
[name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Lydia[/name]
[name]Eliza [/name]
[name]Victoria [/name]
[name]Vivian [/name]
[name]Sadie [/name]
[name]Nadia
Alina[/name]

I would cut:

[name]Penny[/name]- It’s okay for nn, but as full name I hate this.
[name]Eliza[/name]- prefer [name]Elizabeth[/name].
[name]Karina[/name]- not with [name]Caroline[/name].
[name]Alaina[/name]
[name]Vivian[/name]- Maybe I just prefer [name]Vivienne[/name]
[name]Winter[/name]- matchy endings.
[name]Heidi[/name]

I eliminated the following from your list:
[name]Violet[/name]
[name]Nina[/name]
[name]Penny[/name] - I don’t think it’s a stand-alone. [name]Love[/name] [name]Penelope[/name] though.
[name]Karina[/name] - I don’t like the alliteration with [name]Caroline[/name]. Plus, they both start with Car/Kar.
[name]Vienna[/name]
[name]Winter[/name] - dislike with your last name.
[name]Alina[/name] - I much prefer [name]Alaina[/name]

These all sounds great with [name]Carol[/name]/[name]Caroline[/name] in the middle spot:
[name]Phoebe[/name] - my favourite with [name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Fiona[/name] - I like this paired with [name]Carol[/name]
[name]Lydia[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name] - love this!
[name]Alaina[/name]
[name]Victoria[/name] - I’d pair this with [name]Carol[/name], otherwise you have quite the mouthful.
[name]Vivian[/name]
[name]Sienna[/name]
[name]Sadie[/name]
[name]Heidi[/name]
[name]Nadia[/name]

I prefer the elegant [name]Caroline[/name] to [name]Carol[/name], which feels dated to me. With [name]Caroline[/name] and your last name, I particularly like:

[name]Phoebe[/name]- [name]Just[/name] a great name. Ancient yet spunky.
[name]Felicity[/name]- Delightful with [name]Caroline[/name].
[name]Fiona[/name]- Nice Irish history behind the name, clear open sounds, elegant.
[name]Lydia[/name]- Adorable and cool, but pretty and lacy.
[name]Victoria[/name] - Classic, strong. [name]Love[/name] nn [name]Vita[/name].
[name]Nadia[/name] - I don’t find [name]Nadia[/name] clunky at all. I think it’s in the sweet spot between glamorous-foreign-fancy and sleek-wearable, and I like your gymnastics connection to the name!

I’d discard:

[name]Nina[/name]- Not as substantial as some of your other choices, but very sweet.
[name]Violet[/name]- I love [name]Violet[/name], but I agree with [name]Mischa[/name] that it sounds a bit like “violent murmer.”
[name]Penny[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] feels mismatched to me- [name]Penny[/name] is homespun, [name]Caroline[/name] more regal. Ditto [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Sadie[/name], [name]Heidi[/name].
[name]Karina[/name]- too close to [name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Alina[/name] and [name]Alaina[/name] are both part of the liquid, A&L name trend. I dislike both.
[name]Vivian[/name]- quite close to [name]Julian[/name]
[name]Vienna[/name], [name]Sienna[/name], and [name]Winter[/name] all sound like descriptives for the word “murmer,” and [name]Winter[/name] shares an -ER ending with your last name, which is not ideal.

In order of which I like the best

[name]Phoebe[/name] - I like this one a lot, great flow with mn and ln
[name]Fiona[/name] - love!
[name]Heidi[/name] - I love this one, and I think it would match your other name well
[name]Nadia[/name] - this would be my preference over [name]Nina[/name]. More substantial and prettier, imo
[name]Alina[/name]/[name]Alaina[/name] - I prefer [name]Alina[/name] to [name]Alaina[/name]. I think it feels more modern because of the [name]Elaine[/name] connection
[name]Felicity[/name] - this is okay
[name]Ruby[/name] - beautiful I love it. Might be too r heavy with the mn and ln. [name]Ruby[/name] Mermer is a very mouthy name.
[name]Sadie[/name] - I like it, very cute! not quite as adult as some of the others, but I like it a lot
[name]Lydia[/name] - this is okay, bit dated but I think it sounds well with your other names
[name]Vienna[/name]/[name]Sienna[/name] - I actually like both of these, with a slight preference for [name]Vienna[/name], though again it has the word issue “Viennese murmur”

[name]Violet[/name] - okay, always sounds like violent to me
[name]Karina[/name] - this is super pretty, but I don’t think [name]Karina[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] sounds well
[name]Nina[/name] - meh, feels insignificant
[name]Penny[/name] - this is a bit nn for me
[name]Winter[/name] - much different from your other choices, I’m afraid it might be too wordy with your last name like “wintery murmur”. It is a lovely name though
[name]Eliza[/name] - not a fan, sounds like “he lies a”
[name]Victoria[/name]- I’ve never been a bit fan of this one
[name]Vivian[/name] - same as above, just nms
