Help me rename this character after 5 years!

Hello writerberries!

After I finish my NaNoWriMo quest this week, I’m planning to take a small break from that story and return to my other project, which I used my NaNo project to take a break from this past summer . The project I’m returning to takes place in a world that I’ve been developing for about five years now, and I’ve finally decided to take the plunge and rename this character.

There are a lot of reasons why I want to rename her. She was one of the first characters I named and developed, and the story has gone through a number of transformations since then. Her name was originally supposed to be a nod to a fairytale princess but she’s in no way based on that princess (in fact, I have another character who actually is based on that princess). It doesn’t work well with her family’s names, in the context of the kingdom she’s from, and what really tipped the scales, I want to add her current name to my shortlist for real babies.

Without further ado, here is some info about the character:
Current name: [name_u]Briar[/name_u] [name_f]Rhoswen[/name_f]

Role: She’s the best friend of the main character—a princess—whom she helps in her quest to overthrow the current king (her friend’s uncle). The king has involved the kingdom in a number of pointless wars, which the character has lost family members to. When her older brother is drafted, she goes to her friend for comfort, which is the last straw that makes the MC decide to take the throne

Personality: Very much a Ravenclaw. She’s logical, skeptical, organized, persistent, and perceptive to others’ emotions—she’s often able to tell when they’re upset and talk with them, although it’s rare that she shows a lot of emotion herself. She’s an expert archer, openly queer, and is the patient one of the group who is the only reason they don’t die from their impulsivity

Appearance:

Here’s a stock image I’ve had in mind for her for years, plus a Picrew

Family: Her mother is [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] (father unnamed but he’s deceased so it’s not important), and she has 4 brothers named [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], [name_m]Simon[/name_m], [name_m]Patrick[/name_m], and [name_m]Bastian[/name_m] (Bastian being the only one younger than her)

Name: While her brothers’ names are more classic, hers can be a bit spicier since she’s the only girl (similar to [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] in the HP series). It should still be classic though, and it must have an [name_f]English[/name_f] or [name_m]German[/name_m] feel, since her kingdom is based on [name_u]Germany[/name_u] but they speak the world’s equivalent of [name_f]English[/name_f] (for my sanity’s sake). Avoiding names that end in a schwa (“uh”) sound!

Other character names: The others in the group are [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] (sometimes “Matty”), [name_f]Naiara[/name_f], and [name_f]Lumi[/name_f]

You did NaNoWriMo, holy crap! Well done! I hope to do it once it the future as well.

You’ve provided a great description of her character. I think an offbeat classic is the best way to go, looking at her mother’s and brothers’ names. Perhaps you’d like

[name_f]Albina[/name_f]
[name_f]Anneliese[/name_f]
[name_f]Annika[/name_f]
[name_u]Antonia[/name_u] / [name_f]Antonina[/name_f]
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Brigitte[/name_f] (kinda digging this!; bree-GHEE-teh in German)
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] (char-LOT-eh in German)
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f]
[name_f]Evelin[/name_f]
[name_f]Katrin[/name_f]
Odilie
[name_f]Regina[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f]
[name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] (also kind of digging, and you can make a princess connection, i.e. The [name_u]Swan[/name_u] Princess!)

All of these work in both [name_f]English[/name_f] and [name_m]German[/name_m], and if your characters prefers a more gender-neutral/masc-leaning nickname (since all of these are somewhat frilly), you have plenty of options to choose from! Good luck!

Thank you!

I’m digging [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] (my [name_u]French[/name_u] comes out too much with [name_f]Brigitte[/name_f] haha), [name_f]Evelin[/name_f], and [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]! Especially [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], paying homage to her original name.

Briar Rhoswen immediately makes me think Branwen/Bronwyn as potential name though that’s technically Welsh in origin.

other names:
Adele
Agnes
Amabel
Melisande
Romilly
Odette “Etta”
Blythe
Isobel
Briony/Bryony
Ariadne (greek origin)

@TeaJay I did consider Bronwyn/Bronwen, and I think it could work well for her, but it does sound distinctly Welsh.
I like [name_f]Adele[/name_f] as an idea too!
