It’s me again, with lovely [name_f]Odelia[/name_f]. I’d love to find a combo that I can use in my signature (I have vague plans for constructing one sometime in the not-too-distant future) but it’s proving difficult.
What do you think of the combos discussed below? [name_m]How[/name_m] would you change them? What MN would make [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] perfectly beautiful? Any other thoughts would be welcome too!
~ My stand-in combo for the moment is [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Varvara[/name_f]. I love how V.V. makes [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] feel more delicate and ever so slightly vintage, and I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Varvara[/name_f] as a middle. I also like [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and the double Vs. However, [name_f]Violet[/name_f]'s starting to feel a bit too hard and bright next to [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] (which may just be my reaction to constantly thinking of it).
~ The other embryo combo that I’m considering is [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f]. I love the vivid blue of the [name_f]Swan[/name_f] bit, the two Ds don’t bother me too much, and the whole boldness of it just appeals to me. However, I can’t seem to find another middle that quite fits. [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild/name_f [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is a possibility, but I feel like I’m shoving [name_f]Violet[/name_f] in there to fill out the combo, rather than because it matches particularly well.
Other names I’ve considered: [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_f]Margarethe[/name_f], [name_f]Maud[/name_f], [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f], Song, [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_f]Margery[/name_f], [name_u]Simone[/name_u], [name_f]Mercy[/name_f], [name_f]Aveline[/name_f]. Mostly they just haven’t hit the right note (but might do with the right combo).
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild/name_f, I think it works fine by itself. [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f] is on my own list, maybe you’d like that? [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild/name_f? [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild/name_f?
Wow. [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] is truly beautiful. (It is very [name_f]Swan[/name_f] [name_u]Lake[/name_u].) What about [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] [name_f]Varvara[/name_f]? I mean, you said you love [name_f]Varvara[/name_f] as a mn and you love the [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] combo, so…idk, wdut?
I like both combos. But [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] is swoon worthy! So pretty! I also like [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] [name_f]Maud[/name_f]? [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] [name_f]Margery[/name_f]? [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] [name_f]Aveline[/name_f]? I think these are all really pretty but [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] [name_f]Margery[/name_f] stands out to me the most.
Some of these are maybe a little long, but for some reason I kept finding that three syllable names sounded nicer then two syllables. I hope you find something you love!
@silverrose - You’ve pretty much nailed my style, I like just about all the names you’ve suggested! Coppelia is actually in another of my combos. With [name_f]Odelia[/name_f], though - I like [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] ____ [name_f]Fleur[/name_f], and it could go with [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] too. [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] [I prefer this spelling] is also going on my longlist of possible combos, maybe Odelia Swanhild Mary too. [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] is very much my style and goes well with [name_f]Odelia[/name_f], and [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] is beautiful!! [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is also very, very pretty. [name_f]Varvara[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] is simply stunning. [I’m running out of adjectives already!] Thank you so much - you’ve given me a lot of ideas!
@emmamay - Thank you, I’m so glad you all seem to like [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f]! It is very [name_f]Swan[/name_f] [name_u]Lake[/name_u], especially with [name_f]Odette[/name_f] as a potential [name_m]French[/name_m]-style nickname! I’m weighing up [name_f]Varvara[/name_f] with [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] - I’m not sure whether I’ll use it there or whether I’ll just wait and find another combo for [name_f]Varvara[/name_f], but I hadn’t actually seriously considered that combo before, perhaps because I wasn’t sure about [name_f]Varvara[/name_f] immediately next to [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] when I was cooking up [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Varvara[/name_f] . . . and as I said, I love [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Varvara[/name_f] a whole lot! So we’ll see.
@gildedfairyx - Thank you!! I do actually quite like [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] with [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f]. The question for me is whether or not [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] shares too many letters with [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] to be in the same combo. I’ve noticed some people on here do that, but I’m not sure I’m a convert quite yet. I do think [name_f]Margery[/name_f] goes well with [name_f]Odelia[/name_f], but she sounds a little stuffy right next to [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] (at least to me!). I am still thinking about [name_f]Violet[/name_f] with [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f], but I’m not 100% sure yet!
@elifsu - I’m definitely considering that, but I haven’t quite got my head round using [name_f]Varvara[/name_f] without [name_f]Violet[/name_f] OR using [name_f]Varvara[/name_f] right next to [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] (I’d previously vetoed that, but am starting to think it actually works now). So I guess you could say it’s marinating! I kinda think I’d like to keep [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] next to [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f], too, but then [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] would ignore that . . . decisions, decisions . . .
Oh, my! You’ve certainly provided me with a feast of good things! I really, really like Cecile, Sylvaine, Sylvana, Simone/Simona, Viviane, Mireille, Linnet, Therese, and Victorine. Olivet sounds nice after Swanhild, but I think it’s slightly too similar to Odelia for me. [It’s one of those names that I’d just LOVE to have in a combo though!] Again, your list is giving me lots of ideas - Lenore, maybe, or some shorter names like Eve or Ione or Merle. I can’t say much more at the moment, but I will definitely have some of these on my shortlist, and I’m sure I will keep returning for more inspiration.
More ideas or thoughts on the mooted combos are always welcome!
I actually prefer [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Varvara[/name_f] to [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f]. The lilting, repetitive sounds of the former make for a combo that just rolls off the tongue and is softly evocative, whereas [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] is quite consonent-heavy and drops down in tone at the end.
Thank you for your input! I too love the “lilting, repetitive sounds” of [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Varvara[/name_f] - I think the balance of the combo is so wonderful - and I certainly haven’t discounted her yet. I just love the imagery and colour and bravery of [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] as well. i get you about the consonants - I seem to like names with Ds in them! Maybe it would feel lighter if I found a second middle with softer sounds. I am considering [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f], which helps to soften it.
I love [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f]: it does make the combo much more light-footed, and I love anything with [name_f]Mary[/name_f] in it.
What do you think of the names Gwenllian, [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Ediva[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], [name_f]Eglantine[/name_f] and Niniane?
[name_f]Mary[/name_f]'s lovely, isn’t she? I love your description - “light-footed” - what a beautiful image for a combo!
I like Gwenllian, [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], and Niniane. I actually liked [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] but it was far too heavy for my [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] combo with all those Ds flying around! I also considered [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] Gwenllian at one point, and I think the name looks gooooorgeous, but since I’m hazy on the pronunciation I thought best to leave it alone. [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] is a name I’ve always loved, but more for other people, if that makes sense. I’d definitely consider [name_f]Sylvana[/name_f] and [name_f]Sylvaine[/name_f] in combos though! I study Latin and love the meaning “of the woods”.
Niniane is perfectly lovely with [name_f]Odelia[/name_f]!! I first came across [name_m]Ninian[/name_m] [which I don’t really like, oddly enough] in [name_m]Brian[/name_m] [name_m]Jacques[/name_m]'s Redwall, used in the context of a male name, so that would be something I’d have to get past, but it is lovely. Are you pronouncing it with a long a (NINN-ee-AIN) or a short a (NINN-ee-ahn)?
I could warm up to [name_f]Ediva[/name_f], especially as I like Iveta, but I find that [name_f]Eglantine[/name_f] is unfortunately consigned to The Borrowers.
Yes, [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is so simple and sweet, womanly and strong. I think it’s the perfect name to have stood the test of time in the way it has.
I’m glad you like Niniane! Because Niniane is one of the names for the Arthurian Lady of the [name_u]Lake[/name_u], it would complement the lake imagery of [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f]. It’s normally pronounced with a short a, but because it’s an old name and we can’t really know how it would have been pronounced, I think it’s open to alteration if you prefer.
By the way, you mention you like the colour of [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f], and I’m curious as to how you would see it. To me [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] is a glossy black and [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] a pearly pale yellow, so there is an interesting dark against light juxtaposition.
[name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Renata[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f]. All I could think of was another ballerina-sounding name. I am curious to see what you end up choosing
I do so agree on [name_f]Mary[/name_f]! I’ve actually been reading an [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] Trollope ([name_m]Doctor[/name_m] [name_m]Thorne[/name_m]) recently and one of the characters, Lady Scatcherd, said, “I do think [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is the prettiest name in all the language”. And she has one of the best namesakes in history [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is one of the few more modern comparable names for me.
I’d forgotten that - about the Lady of the [name_u]Lake[/name_u], I mean. I used to be really into the Arthurian legends (and suppose still am in some ways - but I really, really don’t like the way ‘true love’ is used to justify loose living, so . . . ).
A glossy black?! That’s so interesting, [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] isn’t the least bit black to me! She always makes me think of a sunflower, so probably some shade of yellow. Quite a bright primrose yellow, and a bit mother-of-pearl-ish too, with threads of gold and perhaps some soft lilac shades in certain moods. [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] is a really deep, vivid, almost cobalt blue, but she has underlying shades of silver and cream too. (Conclusion being that [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] is mostly yellow and blue!)
EDIT: Realised that I find Odette very similar colour-wise to Swanhild, the difference being that Odette is white, then silver, then blue, as opposed to blue, then silver, then cream!
That was probably unnecessarily complex, but there you are!
Thank you for the suggestion! [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Renata[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] is gorgeous!
I’m rather curious on that point, too . . . I’m trying to get a [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] combo down pat for a start, but while I do like [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] / [name_f]Swanhild[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] is rather insistently rearing her head too! Whichever one I finally decide on will have to then battle it out with [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Varvara[/name_f] . . . and I love [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Varvara[/name_f] too much to just discard her, so I may have to find another combo for her to slot into too. sighs The consequences of being a name nerd, I guess!
