Expecting and think it is a boy. I met a little boy a few years ago named Santiago n Santi and I am obsessed with this.
Problem is my husband and I are not Spanish or any background anywhere close.
My husband said it’s cute but we absolutely cannot name our child Santiago.
Does anyone have a nice boy name with a crazy cute nn like this? Similar vibes to santi?
Thanks in advance!!!
Edited to add: I find boys names soooo hard and don’t really like any which makes it hard. I wouldn’t say I have a “style” I just really don’t love a lot of boys names. Like basically any besides Santi.
I like okay - Sullivan nn sully and this most likely will end up being the name if I don’t find a love. But I don’t love it like I love Santi.
We also both like the name Everett nn evie but my brother just named his son Everett so although I know he doesn’t own the name I am not comfortable using it.
There’s no other names on my boys list so far
I love [name_m]Santiago[/name_m] “Santi.” We live in Latin [name_u]America[/name_u] and one of my boys’ friends is [name_m]Santi[/name_m]. It’s so cute! But you’re right- I would find it unusual for a non Spanish-speaker to name a child [name_m]Santiago[/name_m].
[name_m]Santiago[/name_m] is a lovely name, it’s a shame you can’t use it !!
[name_m]Santi[/name_m] makes me think of other boys’ nicknames ending in an -ee sound. Maybe…
[name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] ‘Sully’ or ‘Sunny’
[name_m]Solomon[/name_m] ‘Sol’ or ‘Solly’ or ‘Sonny’
[name_u]Archer[/name_u] ‘Archie’
[name_u]Finn[/name_u] or [name_m]Phineas[/name_m] ‘Finney’
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] ‘Ozzy’
[name_u]August[/name_u] ‘Augie’
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] ‘Teddy’
[name_m]Elio[/name_m] ‘Eli’
[name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] ‘Benji’
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m] ‘Ziggy’
[name_u]Franklin[/name_u] ‘Frankie’
[name_u]Montgomery[/name_u] ‘Monty’
[name_u]Wilder[/name_u] ‘Wiley’
[name_m]Santiago[/name_m] is also used in Portuguese. Salvador/Salvatore is a similar option.
You may also like [name_u]Saint[/name_u] or [name_m]Santino[/name_m]. You can also just name him [name_m]Santi[/name_m]!
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]. [name_m]Basti[/name_m] feels similar to [name_m]Santi[/name_m]. And there’s also [name_m]Seb[/name_m], [name_m]Bas[/name_m], [name_m]Bastian[/name_m], etc.
Santiago is cute!! Honestly I don’t think you have to be Spanish to use it… My cousin isn’t Italian but he named his son Massimo because he loved it.
Longer names with cute unexpected nicknames:
Archimedes nn Archie
Marmaduke nn Moose / Duke
Nicodemus nn Nico
Thelonious nn Theo

Since it’s a place, I think it would be OK to use Santiago. Otherwise you could have the formal name James but use Santi as his nickname and introduce him as that. Other suggestions: Xavier (Xavi), Inigo (Iggy), Christopher (Kit), Crispin (Kip), Cruz (doubt the Beckham’s have Spanish links), Alexander (Sandy), Samuel (Sammy), Sonny (a top 100 stand alone name in English speaking countries).
Before reading the second paragraph I was going to recommend [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] nn [name_u]Sully[/name_u]! It has a very similar feel to it I think. Also maybe [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] nickname [name_m]Seb[/name_m] or Sebbie. [name_u]Or[/name_u] even [name_u]Sylvester[/name_u] nn Syl.
I do think you could still use [name_m]Santiago[/name_m] even though you are not of Spanish background. I know many people who use Italian names or [name_u]French[/name_u] names or [name_m]German[/name_m] names and are not from that background. Names can be international for sure! If you love and it and it feels right for you I say for for it.
If you or your husband really can’t get behind it though here’s a few suggestions…
