Help! My husband's choice is super traditional (and doesn't match our son's name:)

So my husband really, really wants to name a girl (we are TTC, so have to pick a girl’s name) a uber traditional combo:

[name]Sarah[/name] [name]Elisabeth[/name]

Which is fine, but I am not thrilled with it (Besides the fact I like [name]Sara[/name] without an “h” better) and the combo is just too plain in my opinion, especially since our son is named [name]Atticus[/name] [name]Nathaniel[/name].

Any suggestions would be much appreciated, even [name]Seraphina[/name] would be better (but still not my fav:)

What about [name]Sarah[/name], nickname [name]Sadie[/name]? [name]Sadie[/name] has more of the vintage quirky feel like [name]Atticus[/name], but you still get the traditional [name]Sarah[/name] name.

Although [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Elisabeth[/name] is pretty and classic, it’s pretty much the most standard [name]Sarah[/name] combo out there. Nearly every [name]Sarah[/name] I know has [name]Elizabeth[/name] as a middle name.

That said, I think [name]Sarah[/name] and [name]Atticus[/name] sound fine together, maybe because [name]Sarah[/name] is just so classic it goes with anything. (I love the name [name]Sarah[/name] actually, but I see where you’re coming from).

If your husband is dead set on [name]Sarah[/name], perhaps you could try a variation of [name]Elisabeth[/name] in the middle such as:
[name]Sarah[/name] [name]Elspeth[/name], [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Elsbeth[/name], [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Elise[/name], [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Isabelle[/name], [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Lizette[/name]
(see more here: International Variations of Elizabeth | Nameberry)

You could also suggest a variation of [name]Sarah[/name] such as [name]Sadie[/name], [name]Sarai[/name], [name]Zara[/name], or something similar like [name]Sarine[/name], [name]Serena[/name] or [name]Seraphina[/name]. Or [name]Saskia[/name] or even [name]Sasha[/name], though I hate to suggest it since to me it’s a nickname for [name]Alexander[/name].

I love [name]Seraphina[/name]! Some suggestions I can think of that fit with [name]Atticus[/name] [name]Nathaniel[/name] are: [name]Violet[/name] [name]Eliza[/name], [name]Stella[/name] [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Lucinda[/name] [name]Caroline[/name], [name]Scarlett[/name] [name]Maeve[/name], and [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Claire[/name]. These names aren’t exactly traditional but they are all commonly known but not super popular.

I think it works! Especially cause if you have a [name]Sara/name the gender is different from your son so I don’t think they have to ‘match’ as much as 2 girls or 2 boys might. I think [name]Sarah[/name] plays well with various style cause even though it’s somewhat traditional it isn’t at all stuffy (not as much as something like [name]Catherine[/name] or [name]Margaret[/name] for example). To me meeting sisters named [name]Sara[/name] & Arwyn wouldn’t be much stranger than [name]Sara[/name] & [name]Agnes[/name] or [name]Sara[/name] & [name]Alexa[/name]…so I wouldn’t worry about future naming either. I like [name]Sara[/name] & [name]Atticus[/name] over [name]Seraphina[/name] & [name]Atticus[/name] personally.

I agree with [name]Maggie[/name], I think [name]Sarah[/name] and [name]Atticus[/name] work well together, because [name]Sarah[/name] is such a classic it can work with all types of names.

Hell I even know a sibling set of [name]Sarah[/name] and [name]Nevaeh[/name], so you’ve got timeless [name]Sarah[/name] paired with trendy, creative and rather tacky [name]Nevaeh[/name], and yet it still pairs well with it.

Perhaps you could talk your husband round to using a more ‘out there’ middle name, or maybe even a more elaborate form of [name]Elisabeth[/name], say for example [name]Elisheva[/name]/[name]Elisheba[/name] (the original Hebrew form of the name).

I love all the suggestions of a [name]Sarah[/name] nn [name]Sadie[/name] (or even just [name]Sadie[/name] [name]Elisabeth[/name]!). I agree with you that [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Elisabeth[/name] is pretty plain. What about names with a classic feel that are more interesting? Nameberry even has a list: 100 Classic Girl Names That Aren't Boring | Nameberry

[name]Susannah[/name] (nn [name]Sosie[/name], [name]Suzie[/name], Sannah, [name]Anna[/name], [name]Annie[/name], etc.), [name]Sophie[/name], [name]Stella[/name], or [name]Sable[/name] are other S options.

What about [name]Zara[/name]? It’s very nearly the same name, but much more interesting. [name]Sarai[/name] might also be a good substitute- it even shares a root with [name]Sarah[/name]. [name]Seren[/name] might also appeal.

[name]Sarah[/name] is still a nice name, though, so maybe a different middle would be better- I don’t think your husband should get to choose both the first and middle names! Personally I’d go wild in the middle with the first name [name]Sarah[/name]- [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Manon[/name], [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Isabeau[/name], [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Boheme[/name], [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Echo[/name], [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Juno[/name], [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Thomasina[/name], or [name]Sarah[/name] Borealis would be my picks. [name]Even[/name] if you don’t share my style for middle names, you can still be interesting without going crazy- names like [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Colette[/name], [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Corinne[/name], [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Juliette[/name], and [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Madeleine[/name] are interesting but still classic.

My suggestion is [name]Zara[/name] [name]Elise[/name]

[name]Sarah[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is my name! It’s a pretty awesome, cutting-edge name

Personally, I think [name]Sarah[/name] matches well with [name]Atticus[/name]. However, if you want something more interesting, I like previous posters’ suggestions of [name]Sari[/name], [name]Seraphina[/name] or [name]Zara[/name].

Perhaps he’d like [name]Cara[/name], Clara, [name]Mara[/name], [name]Lara[/name], [name]Vera[/name], [name]Farrah[/name] - all rhyme-ish with [name]Sarah[/name].

[name]Elisabeth[/name] is gorgeous, but pretty standard as a middle name, although the ‘s’ spelling makes it prettier and slightly more stand-out - though I do say slightly.

Maybe [name]Elisabeth[/name] as a first name would be more suited to [name]Atticus[/name]? Or maybe [name]Elise[/name], [name]Eliza[/name] etc…?

Btw, I love a pp’s suggestion of Sadie! Atticus and Sadie are lovely together.

Edited for privacy.

I actually like [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Elisabeth[/name]! Yes, it’s pretty traditional, but it’s almost refreshing in this day and age where everyone gives their kids creative/unique/unusual names. [name]Even[/name] though there were probably 9 Sarahs in your class when you were in school, I hardly hear it these days (I’m a substitute teacher). She would probably be the only [name]Sarah[/name] in her class. I also think [name]Sarah[/name] and [name]Atticus[/name] work as a sibset. They’re both vintage-y. I love the suggestion of [name]Sarah[/name] nn [name]Sadie[/name] with [name]Atticus[/name]. You could also pair [name]Sarah[/name] with a less-traditional version of [name]Elisabeth[/name], like [name]Elspeth[/name], [name]Elise[/name], [name]Bess[/name], [name]Lisette[/name], [name]Elisheva[/name], [name]Elisabetta[/name]. There are so many!

If you wanted to go for something that still felt classic…but not as common as [name]Sarah[/name] (especially the combo [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Elisabeth[/name]…)

[name]Lucille[/name]
[name]Laura[/name]
[name]Sally[/name] (actually is a diminutive of [name]Sarah[/name])
[name]Arabella[/name]
[name]Georgia[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name]
[name]Mabel[/name]

Or since [name]Elisabeth[/name]/[name]Elizabeth[/name] is such a common middle name. Maybe something like [name]Eliza[/name] for a middle name instead. Or [name]Elise[/name]. [name]Just[/name] some thoughts

I agree that [name]Sarah[/name] is wonderful, classic, goes with anything (and therefore [name]Atticus[/name]). Maybe if you concede [name]Sarah[/name], you can go just a notch more creative than [name]Elizabeth[/name] for the middle. I really like [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Elspeth[/name] or [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Elise[/name].

What about [name]Clara[/name] [name]Elisabeth[/name]? [name]Clara[/name] and [name]Atticus[/name] sound adorably vintage and [name]Clara[/name] is classic without being boring.

I know [name]Clara[/name] is a love it or hate it name, but it seems like a great substitute to me.

Sarah Elizabeth is the exact name that my husband wanted to use for one of our daughters. (Elizabeth with a “z” and not an “s” - but it’s very close!) I think Atticus and Sarah sound fine together, but I’ll list a few of the names that my husband liked as well as Sarah:

Alice
Caroline
Audrey
Bridget
Jane
Fiona
Penelope
Catherine

Didn’t read the other responses, so sorry for repeats:

[name]Sadie[/name] [name]Eliza[/name]

I’d try to talk him round to [name]Sadie[/name] or something, if I were you.

No offence intended to anyone, but [name]Sarah[/name] is one of the dullest girls’ names out there, in my opinion. [name]Elizabeth[/name] is not doing anything to liven it up, either. I’d feel a little sorry for a girl who got stuck with something as boring as [name]Sarah[/name] when her brother was named [name]Atticus[/name].

I give another thumbs-up to [name]Sarah[/name]! As others have said, even though [name]Sarah[/name] is much more “ordinary” than [name]Atticus[/name] I think they’d work together.
