I usually only lurk here but I’m I’m at my wits end! I’m due in 3 weeks and we still don’t have a name for baby #2. We’re expecting a boy. Our first is named [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Caspian[/name_m]. I am going to try to keep this brief as possible.
We would like his middle name to be [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]. This is a family name on my husband’s side (MN for husband and FIL, first name for my husband’s grandfather) and it would mean a lot to his family if we used it. We rejected it as a MN because we fell in love with [name_m]Peter[/name_m], and I’m sure you can understand why we didn’t like [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m].
We thought we had settled on [name_m]Robert[/name_m] nn [name_u]Robin[/name_u], until we realized that it sounded like we named our son after [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] [name_u]Robin[/name_u] from [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] the Pooh. I was willing to look past it until my husband said we’d have [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] [name_u]Robin[/name_u] and [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Pan[/name_m]. Then we fell in love with [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], until my my [name_m]SIL[/name_m] joked she didn’t know that we liked [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] that much. (I don’t like him at all!) Now I know why people say not to share your name before the baby is born!
This is our list of names we both like, but none seems to hit the sweet spot:
[name_m]Julian[/name_m] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] nn [name_u]Alfie[/name_u]
As you can see, our taste is pretty traditional. We are both willing to be more adventurous, but can’t agree on how. I love [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] but my husband thinks it sounds like the name of an old man picking at a banjo and spitting chewing tobacco on his front porch. He likes [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] but I think it sounds horribly stuffy. [name_m]Julian[/name_m] is both of our favorite right now but we also feel like it’s feels very trendy and don’t like that about it.
We’d like to avoid B names and names that end in an er sound.
[name_m]Richard[/name_m]
[name_m]George[/name_m]
[name_m]Edward[/name_m]
[name_m]Joseph[/name_m]
[name_m]Kenneth[/name_m]
Yes, I am sorry you learned the hard way—never share with family ahead of time!
Honestly, I don’t know of any Julians so is it that popular to the point of bothersome? If you love it, don’t strike it from the list just because of popularity.
Other traditional ideas:
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_m]Philip[/name_m]
[name_m]Edward[/name_m]
[name_u]Rory[/name_u] (close to [name_m]Robert[/name_m] but a little more modern?)
[name_m]Hayes[/name_m]
[name_u]Monroe[/name_u]
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m]
[name_m]Patrick[/name_m]
[name_m]Warren[/name_m]
I really like [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] for you. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Julian[/name_m] and [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] too.
But your overthinking the [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] the Pooh and [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Pan[/name_m] connection, if you love [name_m]Robert[/name_m] nn [name_u]Robin[/name_u] just use it. I can promise you it won’t come up very often if not at all.
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] is an excellent choice if you want to stick with a classic theme, which I do like. If you want to go a little more adventurous, I think [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] is a great choice. It’s outside the box, but not so much that it outshines [name_m]Peter[/name_m]. Besides, the nicknames [name_m]Fred[/name_m] and [name_m]Al[/name_m] give your son traditional options to go by later on in life if he thinks [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] is too formal or [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] too young.
I really like these choices! I think it’s normal to feel unsure, especially as the due date nears and you’ve gone over the list so many times you can’t really think straight any more. It’s especially hard if you’ve had to reject your absolute favourites for various reasons.
[name_u]Robin[/name_u] is lovely but yes — [name_u]Robin[/name_u] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] is definitely too much for me.
[name_m]Julian[/name_m] and [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] are gorgeous contemporary classics. Neither feels trendy to me, and both sit wonderfully beside [name_m]Peter[/name_m] — [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] perhaps slightly better as it really is a timeless classic, never overused and with the sort of varied literary and historical backstory that [name_m]Peter[/name_m] also has. [name_m]Plenty[/name_m] of wonderful namesakes and associations there!

[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]
I’d just like to give a vote for [name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]. I would have never thought of [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] the Pooh with this name, and on the rare occasions when you use his full name, it would be the formal [name_m]Robert[/name_m] and not the nickname [name_u]Robin[/name_u]. [name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] and [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] sound lovely together. Few people will think of the associations you mentioned with [name_m]Peter[/name_m] and [name_u]Robin[/name_u], and if they do, they will quickly forget about them.
That said, if you feel that [name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] is definitely out, [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] could be a nice alternative.

So sorry for repeats!
I like [name_m]Alfred[/name_m], and I like [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. But I agree that you’d be overthinking the [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] the Pooh Connection! If you like [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], what about [name_m]Harlan[/name_m]? [name_m]Harlan[/name_m] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] sounds very handsome to me!
Other names I like for you :
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] nn [name_f]Roe[/name_f]

[name_m]Peter[/name_m] and [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] are both timeless classics so I feel you need something to match with the uncommonness of [name_m]Caspian[/name_m].

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone! Thank you for all your suggestions! I wish I’d brought up [name_m]Robert[/name_m] nn [name_u]Robin[/name_u] with all of you months ago, because at this point I’m less worried about lots of people thinking our son is named for [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] [name_u]Robin[/name_u] and more that [name_u]Robin[/name_u] is firmly stuck in my head as The [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] the Pooh name. With [name_m]Julian[/name_m], I’m less worried about him being [name_m]Julian[/name_m] B. in all his classes and more that it had a big leap in popularity and now it’s going to date him. As someone with a “classic millennial” name, I might be over sensitive to this!
I am really loving the suggestion of [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], which seems to fit so nicely with [name_m]Peter[/name_m] and sounds good with [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]. We haven’t really considered it, so I’m going to have to see what the husband thinks. (He’s even fussier than I am!) I also adore [name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], and he’s rejected both. (Sigh!) However, they were kind of silly rejections ([name_u]August[/name_u] sounds “incomplete,” if we name our kid [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], people will think we named him after trees). I might also have him mull over [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], and [name_m]Philip[/name_m]. I love [name_m]Edward[/name_m] but it’s my dad’s name and I love him dearly but I don’t really like shared first names across living family members. Especially since [name_m]Peter[/name_m] isn’t named for anyone, I don’t want this baby to feel like we dumped our naming obligations ALL on him! Tbh if it were up to just me we wouldn’t bother using [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] either, but it’s not!
Thank you again for helping me. [name_m]Peter[/name_m]'s name was such a breeze, we knew it was right from the moment my husband suggested it until he was born, and we just had fun choosing his middle name. This way is so much more frustrating!
That’s unfortunate that you can’t go with your favourite. However, I do have to add that I absolutely love the name [name_m]Peter[/name_m]!!! And [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] is such an amazing name! I’ve always thought the name [name_m]Peter[/name_m] was so amazing and versatile.
Anyways, based on what names you’ve said you like, here are a list of names I think could work for you and a brother to [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Caspian[/name_m]:
[name_u]Theo[/name_u] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]
