I’m due next [name_f]May[/name_f] with our third child. We’re finding out the gender in [name_u]January[/name_u] and want to narrow down the options before then so we can decide on a name well before [name_f]May[/name_f]. We had decided on [name_u]Callum[/name_u] for a boy, but I’ve just realized the names [name_u]Callen[/name_u] and [name_u]Callan[/name_u] are both also becoming trendy.
I still really like [name_u]Callum[/name_u], but not so much that I’m willing to risk constant confusion with another name. So I’ve been trying to think of alternatives, with the added challenge of having to match the first name to the middle [name_u]Glenn[/name_u], after my husband’s grandfather. I’m happy to honor him, as it’s important to my husband, but having a set middle does make it a little harder to come up with a first name. (Our daughter is [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], and our son is [name_m]Khoa[/name_m], pronounced “kwaa”—he came to us already named.) This is what I have so far:
Malcolm - We both really like this name. It’s in the 300s, but more steady and less trendy. It sounds good with [name_u]Glenn[/name_u], and it’s actually related to [name_u]Callum[/name_u], which we picked in part for the nickname [name_u]Cal[/name_u] and in part for the meaning. We’d use the nickname [name_m]Mac[/name_m]. I’m just not convinced it’s exciting or quirky enough to go with our other kids’ names.
Otis - I like it. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband loves it. Our last name is also a four-letter, O-beginning name, and I’m not sure if I want that much matchiness.
Roscoe - I love this name, and my husband likes it enough to consider it. [name_f]My[/name_f] cousins had a dog named [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] when we were kids, and that doesn’t put me off it at all. I just don’t know how I feel about it with [name_u]Glenn[/name_u]. It sounds a little heavy to me, and with both meanings together, it seems like a lot of woodiness.
Orson - This name has been high on our list for a long time, but it’s never been unanimously at the top for very long. I think for me it’s the double O initials that make me question it. It also sounds a little awkward with [name_u]Glenn[/name_u] to me.
Shepherd - [name_f]My[/name_f] husband is loving [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]. I think it’s a little too trendy for us, plus [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] [name_u]Glenn[/name_u] just makes me think of astronauts. (I know [name_m]Alan[/name_m]’s last name is spelled [name_m]Shepard[/name_m], but still.)
Hugo - [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] was our last-minute, what-if-it’s-actually-a-boy name alternative for [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband still loves it. I’ve never had quite the love for it that he does, but I would have been happy using it. To me, it just doesn’t sound nice with [name_u]Glenn[/name_u].
I also tend to way overthink names (if you can’t tell). It feels like just when I settle on a name, I think of some reason to go back and rework everything. I usually just try to let it pass, but the [name_u]Callum[/name_u]/Callan/Callen thing seems like an actual issue. So if anyone has advice on how to stop overthinking and just live with a name, I’d take that as well.
