Help narrowing down boy names :)

I’m due next [name_f]May[/name_f] with our third child. We’re finding out the gender in [name_u]January[/name_u] and want to narrow down the options before then so we can decide on a name well before [name_f]May[/name_f]. We had decided on [name_u]Callum[/name_u] for a boy, but I’ve just realized the names [name_u]Callen[/name_u] and [name_u]Callan[/name_u] are both also becoming trendy.

I still really like [name_u]Callum[/name_u], but not so much that I’m willing to risk constant confusion with another name. So I’ve been trying to think of alternatives, with the added challenge of having to match the first name to the middle [name_u]Glenn[/name_u], after my husband’s grandfather. I’m happy to honor him, as it’s important to my husband, but having a set middle does make it a little harder to come up with a first name. (Our daughter is [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], and our son is [name_m]Khoa[/name_m], pronounced “kwaa”—he came to us already named.) This is what I have so far:

Malcolm - We both really like this name. It’s in the 300s, but more steady and less trendy. It sounds good with [name_u]Glenn[/name_u], and it’s actually related to [name_u]Callum[/name_u], which we picked in part for the nickname [name_u]Cal[/name_u] and in part for the meaning. We’d use the nickname [name_m]Mac[/name_m]. I’m just not convinced it’s exciting or quirky enough to go with our other kids’ names.

Otis - I like it. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband loves it. Our last name is also a four-letter, O-beginning name, and I’m not sure if I want that much matchiness.

Roscoe - I love this name, and my husband likes it enough to consider it. [name_f]My[/name_f] cousins had a dog named [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] when we were kids, and that doesn’t put me off it at all. I just don’t know how I feel about it with [name_u]Glenn[/name_u]. It sounds a little heavy to me, and with both meanings together, it seems like a lot of woodiness.

Orson - This name has been high on our list for a long time, but it’s never been unanimously at the top for very long. I think for me it’s the double O initials that make me question it. It also sounds a little awkward with [name_u]Glenn[/name_u] to me.

Shepherd - [name_f]My[/name_f] husband is loving [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]. I think it’s a little too trendy for us, plus [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] [name_u]Glenn[/name_u] just makes me think of astronauts. (I know [name_m]Alan[/name_m]’s last name is spelled [name_m]Shepard[/name_m], but still.)

Hugo - [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] was our last-minute, what-if-it’s-actually-a-boy name alternative for [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband still loves it. I’ve never had quite the love for it that he does, but I would have been happy using it. To me, it just doesn’t sound nice with [name_u]Glenn[/name_u].

I also tend to way overthink names (if you can’t tell). It feels like just when I settle on a name, I think of some reason to go back and rework everything. I usually just try to let it pass, but the [name_u]Callum[/name_u]/Callan/Callen thing seems like an actual issue. So if anyone has advice on how to stop overthinking and just live with a name, I’d take that as well.

I really like [name_u]Callum[/name_u], [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m], or [name_m]Orson[/name_m] for you! I think they all work with your children’s names.

I don’t think [name_u]Callum[/name_u] will be mixed up with [name_u]Callen[/name_u] or [name_u]Callan[/name_u] too often. Two-syllable C and K names for boys have been big for a while, but almost all of them end with N. I think [name_u]Callum[/name_u]’s M ending makes it more distinct and less likely to get mixed up.

I do think [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] is exciting and quirky enough for you! Especially with the nickname [name_m]Mac[/name_m] (which I love, by the way!) Finally, I think [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_u]Glenn[/name_u] actually sounds very nice. But, I understand that with an O last name it might be a bit matchy.

I wouldn’t let go of [name_u]Callum[/name_u] yet. But, if you do decide to move on, I like [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] the next best!

I think you should definitely stick with [name_u]Callum[/name_u] if you love it, it goes well with [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and isn’t too similar to [name_u]Callen[/name_u].

Other than that, I love [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m], [name_m]Otis[/name_m] (though you’re right, it may be matchy) and [name_m]Orson[/name_m]!

Thanks so much, @planetnames and @EagleEyes! I feel a lot better knowing we actually have good options and I’m just being too picky. I’m going to leave [name_u]Callum[/name_u] on our short list and add [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] and possibly [name_m]Orson[/name_m].

I don’t think [name_u]Callum[/name_u] is trendy and I don’t think [name_u]Callan[/name_u] is popular enough that they’d be confused, if that helps.

I like [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] and [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] from your list! I think [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] fits really well with [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_m]Khoa[/name_m] and [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] has something quirky and sweet about it!

Malcolm is a wonderful name! To me, it is more exciting than [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], though I like [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f].

Love [name_m]Otis[/name_m], but yeah, the last name thing.

Roscoe [name_u]Glenn[/name_u] I like. I think I like woodsy names for males!

Shepherd [name_u]Glenn[/name_u] is gorgeous and it sounds ancient to me rather than trendy, but what do I know?

Hugo and [name_u]Glenn[/name_u] don’t sound right together.

Orson no because I don’t like first letter alliteration in most cases.

I’d go with [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] or [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]. Or give double middles!

I just love [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_m]Orson[/name_m] and [name_m]Otis[/name_m] with [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] especially, but it seems you’re not sold on any of them. [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] is quite cool too, as is [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u]. In terms of flow with [name_u]Glenn[/name_u], I think [name_m]Otis[/name_m] [name_u]Glenn[/name_u], [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_u]Glenn[/name_u] and [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] [name_u]Glenn[/name_u] work best.

Unfortunately I don’t have any advice on how to stop overthinking names as I’m exactly the same when it comes to naming a child. I was so obsessive when pregnant with my daughter and I’m the same this time.

Have you considered any of the following?

Ambrose
[name_m]Caspar[/name_m]
[name_u]Arlo[/name_u]
[name_m]Monty[/name_m]
[name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]
[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_m]Bastian[/name_m]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Leopold[/name_m]
[name_m]Elio[/name_m]
[name_m]Rafferty[/name_m]
[name_m]Oskar[/name_m]
[name_u]Idris[/name_u]
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m]
[name_u]Jasper[/name_u]
[name_m]Soren[/name_m]
[name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]
[name_u]Rory[/name_u]
[name_m]Louis[/name_m]
[name_u]Miles[/name_u]/Milo
[name_m]Winston[/name_m]
[name_m]Phineas[/name_m]
[name_u]Remy[/name_u]
[name_m]Stellan[/name_m]
[name_m]Angus[/name_m]
[name_m]Tavish[/name_m]
[name_m]Wilbur[/name_m]
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m]
[name_m]Alastair[/name_m]

I overthink names too. But sounds like you chose well with [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. I don’t think [name_u]Callum[/name_u] would be confusing, but [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] or [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] would also be great and match well with [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. I’d exclude [name_m]Otis[/name_m], [name_m]Orson[/name_m] and [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] as they don’t seem right for you. If you don’t mind the alliteration with [name_u]Glenn[/name_u], I’d suggest [name_m]Graham[/name_m]. Or [name_m]Alastair[/name_m], [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_m]Hamish[/name_m], [name_m]Conor[/name_m], [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m], [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]

Thanks for the feedback, that is helpful!

I do like a lot of those! I’ll have a look with my husband later, thanks for the ideas.

Glad I’m not the only one! thanks for the feedback and ideas, I do really like [name_m]Graham[/name_m]!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It’s nice to know I’m not the only one picky about double initials. I grew up with the initials AA and they still bug me!

I think [name_m]Malcom[/name_m] you seem to both like it a lot!

Lots of great name options there!

I would cross off [name_m]Otis[/name_m] with a 4 letter O beginning surname. You have so many other great options so why settle for one that may be a bit hard to live with? I would also cross off [name_m]Orson[/name_m] for the same reason. Sorry, but I also don’t like [name_m]Orson[/name_m].

I agree with you that [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] may be a little too trendy for you, and I’m not keen on it with [name_u]Glenn[/name_u] for the same reason you gave.

That leaves
[name_u]Callum[/name_u] - love it, and with your family, and nn [name_u]Cal[/name_u].
[name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] - love it with your family, and don’t see it as boring. Interesting in fact as rarely used now. [name_u]Love[/name_u] nn [name_m]Mac[/name_m].
[name_u]Roscoe[/name_u] - again, love it and with your family. I like it with [name_u]Glenn[/name_u]. I like the hint of woodiness!
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] - a favourite name of mine, and again, lovely with your family. Not perfect with [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], but doable.

If you don’t like how popular [name_u]Callum[/name_u] is how do you feel about [name_u]Cameron[/name_u]?

Thanks! [name_f]My[/name_f] brother is 17 and has so many friends named [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] he calls them the Cams :joy: so I do like it as a name, but to me it feels very common because of that!

Callum and [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] are my favorites for you and go well with your other childrens names. I don’t think either is trendy.

I also adore [name_m]Orson[/name_m] and [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u], but not with a O last name.
