Help! Needing a pretty long-form name

So my husband really likes Etta for a girl and admittedly, it’s grown on me. But I feel it’s too short and nickname-y. I personally have a longer name that can be shortened and like that option to switch back and forth. Plus, our son’s name (and several nieces and nephews) starts with “E” so I like the idea of having something else as the main name with a different first letter.

I like Loretta, Margaret, Marietta, or Violet as possible contenders that can be shortened to Etta (do NOT like Juliet/ta or Henrietta) but my husband isn’t really a fan of those (mostly he feels they are too old lady sounding…or doesn’t want to name our baby a color haha). I feel like I’ve read every possible longer name but am not walking away with many that feel like actual names that aren’t too out there. Plus I really care about the meaning of names or having some sort of connection to it. Got any ideas? What do you think of those?

Otherwise my name choice is Lydia, which I’ve liked for years and she could shorten to Lydi/Liddy for fun. But something about Etta is sorta cute and spunky to us and hard to let go of. Thoughts? Ideas?

I’m guessing your husband wouldn’t love [name_f]Bernadette[/name_f], then—but that’s another option with a positive meaning. Of your choices, I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]—very pretty, and not old-ladyish as flower names are very in right now.

Other ideas:

[name_f]Bridget[/name_f] / [name_f]Bridgette[/name_f]
[name_f]Colette[/name_f] (or [name_f]Nicolette[/name_f])
[name_f]Electra[/name_f]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Estella[/name_f] (or [name_f]Estrella[/name_f])
[name_f]Odette[/name_f]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Etta[/name_f]! Especially with the idea of using either [name_f]Loretta[/name_f] or [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], it’s too bad your DH isn’t into them. I also love your second choice of [name_f]Lydia[/name_f]!

Suggestions for [name_f]Etta[/name_f] (sorry for repeats):
[name_f]Rosetta[/name_f]
Bernedette
Antoniet
[name_f]Odette[/name_f]
[name_f]Perdita[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Claretta[/name_f]
[name_f]Lauretta[/name_f]
[name_f]Anthea[/name_f]
[name_f]Bridget[/name_f]
[name_f]Janet[/name_f]
[name_f]Bethany[/name_f]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]

Unfortunately [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] , [name_f]Julietta[/name_f] and [name_f]Loretta[/name_f] are the only ones that work. Maybe [name_f]Violetta[/name_f]?

Would [name_f]Ella[/name_f] work just as well? Because then [name_u]Ellery[/name_u] , [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] , [name_f]Elliana[/name_f] , [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] , [name_f]Elletta[/name_f] , [name_u]Ellison[/name_u] , [name_f]Elisa[/name_f] & [name_f]Elise[/name_f] would be great options!

[name_f]Rosetta[/name_f] is one we both liked in theory, but it makes me think of [name_f]Rosetta[/name_f] [name_m]Stone[/name_m] and it reminds him of latte art as a former barista.

I feel like I need to keep mentioning [name_f]Loretta[/name_f]/[name_f]Lauretta[/name_f] and see if he will go for it. It’s too bad there’s no good combo name for [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] and [name_f]Etta[/name_f]…haha, trust me, we’ve tried.

For me, [name_f]Ella[/name_f] is too popular. Plus it’s too similar to our son’s name. But many of those suggestions are very pretty!

Ettel? It’s not on the nameberry database but I promise I didn’t make it up

I love [name_f]Etta[/name_f], and [name_f]Ettie[/name_f] too.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about:

  • [name_f]Colette[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Estelle[/name_f]/[name_f]Estella[/name_f] ([name_f]Ettie[/name_f] is an accepted nn so I don’t see why [name_f]Etta[/name_f] can’t be
  • [name_f]Esther[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Coretta[/name_f] - personally I love the [name_f]Coretta[/name_f] [name_m]Scott[/name_m]-[name_m]King[/name_m] association
  • [name_f]Marietta[/name_f]

I don’t think [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] has been mentioned - my favourite way to nn [name_f]Etta[/name_f].

I came on to suggest [name_f]Lisette[/name_f]. It has sounds from both [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] and [name_f]Etta[/name_f], plus I think she could be either Liddy or [name_f]Etta[/name_f] for short.

I suppose that you could use [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]

The good think about [name_f]Etta[/name_f] is that it can be short for a lot of names! Here are my favourites:
[name_f]Loretta[/name_f], which is already on your list and which I think is lovely
[name_f]Colette[/name_f]/[name_f]Coletta[/name_f]
[name_f]Mariette[/name_f]/[name_f]Marietta[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgette[/name_f]
[name_f]Cosette[/name_f]
[name_f]Alouette[/name_f]
[name_f]Annette[/name_f]
[name_f]Violetta[/name_f]
Fiametta
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Yvette[/name_f]
[name_f]Odette[/name_f]/[name_f]Odetta[/name_f]
[name_f]Bernadette[/name_f]
[name_f]Jacquetta[/name_f]
ALSO
[name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Ethel[/name_f] which may sound a bit old-fashioned but are lovely nonetheless and can easily be shortened to [name_f]Etta[/name_f].

If you still really like [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], maybe you could use the nn [name_f]Edda[/name_f]? [name_f]IMO[/name_f], it sounds very similar to [name_f]Etta[/name_f].

the Scandinavian form of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is [name_f]Mette[/name_f]. (Meh-teh). You could name her [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and call her [name_f]Mette[/name_f], or just [name_f]Mette[/name_f].

[name_f]Elettra[/name_f] immediately comes to mind. It has a really romantic feel to me without being too vintage. [name_f]Josette[/name_f], [name_f]Cosette[/name_f], [name_f]Annette[/name_f], and [name_f]Ivette[/name_f] are other possibilities. [name_f]Lynette[/name_f] is also kind of a compromise between [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] and [name_f]Etta[/name_f] but it’s not quite the same feel, imo.

“[name_f]Etta[/name_f]” names are my favorite!

Some I would suggest for you:

Léonette / Léonetta

[name_f]Wynette[/name_f] / Wynetta

Dulchetta

Fioretta

[name_f]Olivetta[/name_f]

[name_f]Primetta[/name_f]

[name_f]Franzetta[/name_f]

I’m jumping in late, but I love Ette names. My very favorites are, [name_f]Suzette[/name_f], [name_f]Cosette[/name_f], [name_f]Odette[/name_f], and [name_f]Nicolette[/name_f]. [name_f]Georgette[/name_f], and [name_f]Nanette[/name_f] are also pretty cute.
