Help! Opinions on nn Ceci

Berries-
I need your help. Hubby and I have changed our minds (again!) and decided to make our number one baby girl name selection, [name]Cecilia[/name] [name]Jan[/name]. We are currently ttc and, if it is a baby girl, she will be joining her big brother, [name]Harold[/name] [name]Jonathan[/name], who goes by the nn [name]Hal[/name]. We want her to have the nn Ceci. (Pronounced C-C.) As spelling as never been my strong point, I thought I would ask for help on this. If we spell her nn as Ceci, do you think people will find it odd? Are we changing the pronunciation by changing the spelling? I like the way it looks more like her full name, [name]Cecilia[/name], and the nn Ceci goes so much better with [name]Hal[/name]. HELP PLEASE! All insights welcomed and needed.

I would use [name]Cece[/name] or Cici. Ceci looks like it would be pronounced sessy.

Thanks lis09. That is exactly what I was worried about. I appreciate your input.

I think the Ceci spelling is fine. People will hear her nickname before they see it spelled out and will know how to pronounce it.

Paw, I confess that is what I was hoping to hear. What do you think? Ceci or [name]Cece[/name]?

I like hoe Ceci looks more similar to [name]Cecilia[/name]. I think Ceci is fine, even though when I first saw it I thought sissy. But paw is right, everyone will hear her nn before they read it, so they’ll know how to pronounce it. Besides, it’s a nn, I wouldn’t worry about spelling yet. If it’s bad, your daughter won’t have a problem going from Ceci to [name]Cece[/name]. I bounce around from [name]Allie[/name] to [name]Alli[/name] to [name]Ally[/name] all the time. It’s no big deal.

I think it works. I know more people might spell it [name]Cece[/name], but then again they might have [name]Cecelia[/name] as their first name. Ceci definitely makes more sense for your spelling. Good luck!

I think Ceci works! Before I read your question, I read them name in the subject line as “C-C”. I like it like that!

Thanks berries for responding and calming some of my fears.
Jillianelizabeth- I’m so glad that is how you read her name BEFORE reading the post! That makes me feel much better.
Marinadancel17- I agree, obviously. I think Ceci is a much nicer spelling for the name, [name]Cecilia[/name].
Waverly1234- What you pointed out was my biggest concern- that people would read her name as [name]Sissy[/name]. We have a cousin with the nn [name]Sissy[/name], and while it fits her to a ‘t’, it came from her brother not being able to say her name correctly, and thus trying to call her ‘sister’ instead. So, it has nothing to do with her original name. I want my daughter to have a nn that comes from her original name and I don’t think I would want her to change the spelling all the time. Thus, we are back at the beginning of the debate; Ceci vs. [name]Cece[/name] as a nn for [name]Cecilia[/name].

[name]Just[/name] wanted to share this thought as well: Hubby and I live in another state from the rest of our families. When the birth announcements go out (if our second ends up being a girl) it will say something like, “We welcome with love [name]Cecilia[/name] “Ceci” [name]Jan[/name] [name]Smith[/name].” It will really annoy me if all I hear about then are phone calls to the grandparents asking how to pronounce our child’s nn. Is that something I need to accept as likely to happen with this spelling? What do you think?

I think C-C is such a standard nickname for [name]Cecilia[/name] that you probably won’t get many queries if you spell it Ceci or [name]CeCe[/name].

Head off the family questions about pronounciation of the nickname by calling and using the nn in the call with key people ( your parents, in-laws). word will get out quick.

Thanks Paw and [name]Blade[/name]. That makes me feel much better.

[name]Blade[/name]-side bar. Have you decided on a girl’s name yet? Congratulations and best wishes on your soon to be little person!

My two cents - I would rather spell it [name]Cece[/name] or Cici, because when it is obviously pronounced the same, you wonder why the second part is spelled differently. Like, did they intend it to be “sessy,” or “sissy?” [name]Cece[/name] is the most common, and used for the spelling [name]Cecilia[/name], so I don’t think you have anything to worry about by spelling [name]Cece[/name] the traditional way, and you will get less incidents of misspelling/misunderstanding. But it’s really not a big issue either way.

Thanks cristinamariane for your opinion!

I think I have enough to help us make up our minds. Thanks to everyone who responded. You were a big help!
