I have been making baby name lists for nine months and we are still undecided. Our little boy is now past his due date and coming any time now. I really would like for him to have a name when he comes home… Our last name is Christensen. So that rules out any first name that ends with a sen/son sound (like [name]Edison[/name]). Also names that end in a “k” sound (like [name]Garrick[/name]) don’t seem to flow very well. Three syllables seems like a mouthful with our formal sounding, longer last name. Those are the limitations I see in combination with our last name.
Some of my favorites that my husband is not too crazy about include: [name]Milo[/name], [name]Levi[/name], [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Elliott[/name], [name]Jed[/name] and [name]Riley[/name]. I seem to be drawn to two syllable names with a vowel ending. I think they seem more friendly and approachable. Not too common, but familiar. [name]Elliott[/name] and [name]Riley[/name] are starting to cross over into girl territory, which I am bummed about.
My husband on the other hand, is drawn to stronger sounding, more formal names with a bit of historical or literary connection. And he loves all things British. Some of his favorites include: [name]Winston[/name], [name]Franklin[/name], [name]Edison[/name], [name]Deacon[/name], [name]Dieter[/name], [name]Garrick[/name], and [name]Magnus[/name]. Lots of names ending with “n” which I am not too crazy about. And lots that sound like stuffy last names to me.
One that we both seem to be okay with is [name]Frazier[/name]. But I am not 100% convinced. The middle name might be [name]Dieter[/name], but that doesn’t go very well with [name]Frazier[/name]. Besides that, we don’t seem to agree on much. Any new ideas that I haven’t thought of to bring out tastes together would be greatly appreciated!
[name]Henry[/name] is strong sounding and british to me!
[name]Briggs[/name] is also fun - it was my grandmother’s maiden name, but I will never be able to use it w/ my last name. It sounds so strong!
[name]Milo[/name] is fantastic - maybe your husband will change his mind!
[name]Desmond[/name] is fun, and can be shortened to [name]Des[/name].
What about [name]Hugo[/name]? It’s two syllables and ends with a vowel sound but is also very formal sounding. There’s also [name]Hugh[/name], if you think [name]Hugo[/name] might be a little too unusual.
Wow – I could have written that post almost word for word. Ditto on the last name (ends in “ean” starts with S – rules out so many!) My husband loves the historical (over-the-top, in my opinion) names and I’m all about the traditional ones. Except the ones your husband likes are much more normal, [name]IMO[/name], than those my husband prefers (Caephas, [name]Titus[/name], [name]Marius[/name], Trajan, [name]Hadrian[/name]).
I’m not great at coming up with lists but I’ll give it a shot:
[name]August[/name]/[name]Augustus[/name]
[name]Isaiah[/name] (has that vowel ending, but a bit more formal)
[name]Andrew[/name] (a great classic)
[name]Dominic[/name] (sounds very British to me)
[name]Graham[/name] (likewise)
[name]Philip[/name] (also sounds British)
[name]Noah[/name] (has the vowel ending, but also has a history)
[name]Jasper[/name] (may not be your style – I just love this name)
[name]Leopold[/name], nn [name]Leo[/name]
[name]Dexter[/name]
[name]Edgar[/name], nn [name]Eddy[/name]
[name]Frazier[/name] Christensen sounds fantastic, but I agree that [name]Dieter[/name] doesn’t go with it. I’ve found that [name]Edward[/name] usually sounds great as a middle and works well here – [name]Frazier[/name] [name]Edward[/name] Christensen. Also, don’t forget about nicknames – if you go with [name]Magnus[/name], for example, you could call him [name]Gus[/name] (this one is on our list also). [name]Hope[/name] this helps!
Our last name ends in-er, so I can suggest all the names ending in -er that I can’t use:
[name]Oliver[/name]
[name]Victor[/name]
[name]Oscar[/name]
[name]Trevor[/name]
[name]Hector[/name]
[name]Spencer[/name]
[name]Arthur[/name]
[name]Archer[/name]
[name]How[/name] about [name]Miles[/name]? [name]Miles[/name] Christenson would be very handsome, and it flows nicely! [name]Miles[/name] also has a British feel to it.
