Help! Rare R name for displaced prince

Hi! I’m having trouble naming a character in my novel, and thought this would be a good place to look. The setting and culture of the story is a blend between ancient Scandinavia (especially Norway), medieval England, and the ancient Celts. The character was the heir to the throne but before he was old enough to rule, a relative usurped the throne and became a sort of tyrant. His immediate family, now in hiding, still planned for him to take the throne back, and he intended to but, due to a very complicated series of events, his sisters (the main characters) ended up doing it first and splitting the kingdom between them. They didn’t kill the relative, however, and she started plotting how to take it back again, and the character, furious at having his birthright stolen from him, joins her in an attempt to dethrone his sisters.

He’s somewhere between 17 and 25 at that point, with shaggy, light brown hair, blue eyes, and a tallish, lanky frame. He’s kind of a jerk.

His name absolutely HAS to start with the letter R. I haven’t been able to find any that quite “fit.” I want something unusual, not like Richard which people would recognize immediately. I like a lot of Norse, Irish, Polish, German, and Welsh names, but I’m fine with others, or made up names too! I want something that sounds formal, upper-class, refined, fitting to his station, (melodic?), or even really, eccentrically, overly fancy! And the longer the better! Even portmanteaus like Alfhildegarde, just ideally longer than five or so letters. I like names with aesthetics like Laurent, Maverick, Evander, or Killian, but with R.

Sorry, this is really long, but thanks for the help!

[name_m]Rafferty[/name_m] or [name_u]Remington[/name_u] would be my pick!

Thank you for the suggestions! They are not quite what I’m looking for, but I appreciate your time!

Rorick!

[name_u]Or[/name_u] maybe…

[name_m]Roderick[/name_m]
[name_m]Richard[/name_m]
Roscuro

Thank you! I will definitely be considering Rorick. RO names generally haven’t been “right” for this character, but that one seems to be an exception.

OOOHHH your story sounds INCREDIBLE!! Stories about not-so-great heirs trying to regain their thrones in ancient-culture inspired worlds are SO fun (lol I’m writing a similar sort of character in an ancient Greece/Rome inspired world).
Here are some names I came up with, sorry if it’s not what you were looking for:
From the internet:
-Ragnvald (meanings I found were ‘ruler’ and ‘powerful judgement’ and I thought it was maybe fitting)
-Randel (of Germanic origin, I think…from what I could find lol, meaning has something to do with shields and possibly wolves)
-Radcliff (literally means ‘red cliff’, of English origin)
-Roran (breaking your five letter rule, but if you look up the name on behindthename.com, it mentioned it had some Scottish-Gaelic and Irish derivatives meaning something along the lines of the Red King)
-Radulfr (Old Norse and very norse sounding if that’s what you’re going for, means 'wolf counsel '…I’m not exactly sure what THAT means lol)
From my brain:
-Romundel
-Reidrick (or Ridrick or Redrick, something along those lines lol)
-Raffaell
-Rasilven
Sorry if that’s not quite what you were looking for! Best of luck with your story, it sounds spectacular!

Thank you! I like almost every one of those! (And the five letter thing isn’t really a rule, just a preference :))

Reidar (Norwegian)
[name_m]Ragnvald[/name_m] (Norwegian)
[name_m]Rolf[/name_m] (Norwegian/German)
[name_m]Roar[/name_m] (Norwegian)
[name_m]Roald[/name_m] (Norwegian)
[name_u]Remi[/name_u] (Norwegian)

[name_u]Reid[/name_u] (Irish)
[name_m]Ragnor[/name_m] (Norwegian)
[name_m]Rondel[/name_m] (Welsh)
[name_u]Romney[/name_u] (Welsh)

I love the sound of your story!
[name_m]Rhydian[/name_m]
[name_m]Romero[/name_m]
[name_m]Rurik[/name_m] (Rurikhale, Rorickale, Rurikard)
[name_m]Rhoderick[/name_m]
I keep thinking about [name_u]Ryker[/name_u] too, which on its own doesn’t have the vibe you want, I think, but perhaps you could blend it somehow: Rykurt, Rykerdene, Rykdene Rykervale?

Thank you! I really like those.

Wow, those are great! I really love them!

I love the meaning of [name_m]Romaric[/name_m] for him!
I really appreciate all of you taking time to help me out! He’s actually a secondary, somewhat side character, but I’ve been trying to name him for about nine months, so thanks again!
