[name_m]Iam[/name_m] neutral on the name. There’s nothing wrong with it, I just don’t really like the mythology association.
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f], and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Laura[/name_f] in particular, is lovely! I think [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] has a bright, sunny energy and magnetism to it that is such a great quality in a name. It’s balanced, though, with the fact that it’s an ancient name as well. I think of the steadfast, powerful wife of [name_u]Odysseus[/name_u]. While it’s not a name on my list personally, it always makes me happy to meet a [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] (I have met a couple young ones that absolutely suited the name in their own ways).
[name_f]Nell[/name_f] and [name_f]Nellie[/name_f] are probably my favorite [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] nicknames outside of [name_u]Penny[/name_u].

I’m rather hot-and-cold on [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], but it’s objectively a gorgeous name. I love that is has such a long, storied history of use. It’s historic, romantic, and literary in the best of ways. And I love that you could call her [name_f]Nell[/name_f] or [name_f]Nellie[/name_f]! [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Laura[/name_f] is lovely, and it reminded me of [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_u]Laurel[/name_u], which I think is just gorgeous.
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is gorgeous!
I love [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] she’s elegant, whimsical, bright, visually elegant, has interesting mythological references along with cottagecore feels through the meaning ‘weaver’. Personally I love [name_u]Penny[/name_u] as a nickname but I think [name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_f]Nellie[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_f]Lola[/name_f] and the ever so stylish [name_u]Penn[/name_u]. I think [name_f]Laura[/name_f] makes a lovely middle name for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] very classic. I have [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_u]Coast[/name_u] on my list. I think [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_u]Coast[/name_u] on her own would be a dreamy name.
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is sweet and stylish - I like the rhythm, and the approachable flair.

In theory I should really like, it has everything I usually warm to. But I’ve just never been quite able to get away with Penelope… am I right in thinking one of the Kardashian brood is [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]? If that’s the case, that’s probably a lot to do with it.
I adore [name_u]Penny[/name_u] even as a stand-alone though. Also love [name_f]Nell[/name_f] as a short form
I really like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. It was on my list until one of my cousins had a daughter and named her [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. It also bothered me a little, since I already have an [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], that both could have the nn [name_f]Nell[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Laura[/name_f] is beautiful. I’m partial to [name_f]Laura[/name_f] as a middle name as it’s a family name for me and it’s one of my daughters’ middles.
I do see [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] getting more common where I am - that could be something to consider. It’s a great name so no surprise it’s gaining in use. And with so many nn options it won’t get easily lost in the crowd. It’s such a distinctive name with a fun rhythm!
Nn possibilities that haven’t already been mentioned (some a bit stretchy): [name_u]Penna[/name_u], [name_f]Peppa[/name_f], [name_f]Pele[/name_f], [name_u]Noel[/name_u], [name_f]Nola[/name_f], [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]
I think I said this to someone else recently… but why do you need to be talked into loving a name? Seeing these kind of threads makes me sad - I feel like nobody should have to be talked into loving a name!
That being said, I think [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is a nice name, ESPECIALLY with my beloved [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] or [name_f]Lola[/name_f] as nns (also quite fond of [name_f]Pippi[/name_f], [name_u]Pepper[/name_u], [name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Posy[/name_f], etc. as nicknames too!). I’m not big into mythology names in general (which is why I will likely never use [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] myself), but it’s a pretty, flowy name that has two of my favorite nns on the planet, and I do like the idea of how devoted [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] stayed to [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] despite the temptation not to (which doesn’t say much about Ulysses’ commitment to her, but it’s been a long time since I’ve gone near the [name_u]Odyssey[/name_u] anyway, so I’m not sure I could even speak to that). Back when I actually was considering it (probably over a decade ago), [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] was not as common as it is now and it still did have an air of [name_f]British[/name_f] quirkiness, which I also liked (plus how flowy she is!).
It seems fun, until I think about it being the cheapest form of American currency.
I can’t!
i absolutely love penelope! i love that it can go with almost any name/aesthetic, and nella is my absolute favorite nickname for it.

You’re absolutely right. I believe I should have worded the topic better - I needed to be reminded why I liked this name in the first place.
I rushed with the title and quickly explained my dilemma because I am excited to fall back in love with this name. I have this bad habit of overthinking the names I’ve liked for years, cycling names on and off my shortlist, and now I’m at a fork in the road where I want to use this but worry about how popular it has become.
Ahh ok, I can get behind that much easier. If Penelope is one of those names deep in your heart, despite fads and trends, I would definitely encourage you to keep her! I like an unusual name as much as the next berry… but I also benefitted, as a shy kid, from having a familiar name that didn’t make any waves. There can be pros and cons to both! And Penelope is truly lovely, and so versatile.
Thank you for sharing your personal experience with me, that really softens my heart and despite it being so popular in my age group, I knew only one [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] in my life and she was the sweetest girl I knew.
my apologies if I incorrectly assumed your name @ashthedreamer .
haha, no, you guessed right I also didn’t go to school with more than one until halfway through high school, and the only time it truly bothered me when I was in a college course and there were 3 of us and we all sat next to each other - and all had the same last initial! Talk about popular name problems lol. But popular names these days account for much less of the popularity from when we were kids anyway… if you love [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], why not go for it?
