I recently found out I was pregnant. If it is a girl, we were going to name her [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u]. [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] is my great grandpas name and [name_u]James[/name_u] is my grandpas name. That has been my girl name for 10+ Years. . Now [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] is getting so popular and 3 pregnant girls I know due next month were considering the name. I don’t know if I should change my name now.
I have been thinking maybe [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is my middle name and I love the name [name_u]James[/name_u], but my husband isn’t convinced of [name_u]James[/name_u] as a first name and thinks we should stick with [name_u]Emerson[/name_u].
Should i change [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] since it’s getting so popular? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_u]James[/name_u] is okay for a girl name or is it too masculine? ( I love it on a boy, but my husband doesn’t at all)… Any other suggestions?? Help!!
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] sounds like a boys name. What about [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]? Or, using a name with a similar meaning? [name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f] shares a meaning with [name_u]James[/name_u], as does [name_f]Jacquetta[/name_f]. Definitely don’t do [name_u]James[/name_u] as her first name, and refrain from [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u]. You don’t want to make her feel as though you wanted a boy, had a girl, so you gave her a boys name anyways.
If you’re going to use [name_u]James[/name_u] on a girl, I would definitely only use it in the middle spot and give her a very obvious girl name instead of a unisex one like [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] to balance out [name_u]James[/name_u]. [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] is very very masculine all together.
I’m just so picky about girls names, there’s not many I like at all. Thanks for the advice though!
You should save [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] for a son. What are you grandmothers’ names & surnames?
If I saw [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u], I’d assume it was a boy. I would assume a [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] would be a girl, though. [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], to me, sounds doubly trendy since it starts with [name_f]Em[/name_f]- and ends with -son. I would use [name_u]Jamison[/name_u] or [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] for a girl before [name_u]James[/name_u].
[name_u]James[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] intrigues me, I rather like it
maybe nn. [name_u]Jamie[/name_u]?
I’ve gone through every girl name. I liked [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] since it’s a family name before it was so popular and trendy. Now I’m stuck… Stick with it or change it because of it’s growing popularity. I do like [name_u]James[/name_u] with a girly name like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] for the mn, but I can tell already i might be alone on that.
I absolutely love both of your name choices for a girl. Please don’t be discouraged by them being a tad masculine. They are amazing choices on a girl, but only a bit above average choices on a boy. [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is probably what I would go with.
Thank you! ![]()
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] is ok for a girl. never was crazy about it for either sex. I do love the name [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] without the z, on the s, because I like how [name_u]Seth[/name_u] sounds on a girl. I would use [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] [name_u]James[/name_u], and she could have [name_u]Seth[/name_u], [name_f]Libby[/name_f], Libba, [name_f]Beth[/name_f], [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] as nickname options.
Are there any other girl names you like? [name_m]Even[/name_m] unisex ones. Maybe someone can suggest some other names you might like based off of those.
I am not opposed to [name_u]James[/name_u] on a girl, I just think it needs a girly name paired with it.
Either [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] or [name_u]James[/name_u] is fine for a girl, as a first or middle, but not both- and either should be balanced out with a clearly feminine name. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] are both lovely.
I think the fact that [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] is a family name kind of trumps the popularity. But honestly, I wouldn’t pair it with [name_u]James[/name_u] for a girl, it’s really too much. Are there no female names in your family tree to work with?
[name_u]Jamie[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is great for a girl, but i do think [name_u]James[/name_u] just doesn’t work as a first name.
What is it about all the girl names you’ve ever heard that doesn’t work for you? Are you put off by anything that seems at all “frilly”? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you just have a lot of masculine names that you happen to like? Would it help to get suggestions of female names that have the clean sound you like in male ones?
My grandmas names are Jorda and Leore, not my favorites. We definitely don’t like any of my husbands grandparents names either… We may have to use [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] has a middle name for girl or boy now because it’s getting trendy. I really can’t think of any girls name I love. I think [name_u]Rory[/name_u] is cute, but definitely like [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] better.
I agree with everything the previous posters said. [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] sounds like a boys name to me and I would worry that a daughter felt you had wanted a boy. I’d try for one more feminine name. It doesn’t have to be super frilly just something that clearly says girl. As to [name_m]Emmerson[/name_m]: if you think [name_m]Emmerson[/name_m] is becoming too popular I would stay away as I think it will probably keep rising in popularity with parents who like both [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_u]Madison[/name_u] and are looking for something “new”. I feel your pain though. I loved [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and was upset to find it rising in the ranks. I found the similar [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] which I actually like more after that. I’d look at this as an opportunity instead of a frustration. If [name_m]Emmerson[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] is still your favorite name in the world after some research and reconsideration then I think you should stick with it. But, I do encourage you to look at and really consider slightly more feminine names.
You seem to not like super traditional girls names so maybe something nature inspired or spunkier would work better for you. Maybe something like [name_u]Robin[/name_u], [name_u]Wren[/name_u], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_f]Willow[/name_f] (I have no idea why I just came up with R and W names) might suit you better. [name_m]Even[/name_m] traditionally boys names that have “gone to the girls” might suit you better - [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], [name_u]Madison[/name_u], [name_u]Addison[/name_u] or even [name_m]Lennox[/name_m]. Or more feminine sounding occupational names: [name_u]Sailor[/name_u], [name_u]Harper[/name_u], [name_u]Taylor[/name_u], or [name_u]Piper[/name_u]. Maybe even the more masculine sounding virtue names with [name_m]Emmerson[/name_m] as a mn? [name_f]Honor[/name_f] or Merit maybe? I also like the idea of [name_m]Emmerson[/name_m] [name_f]Joy[/name_f].
I seem to remember you mentioning that you like [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] and [name_f]Veda[/name_f]/[name_f]Vita[/name_f] (on the V thread). [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] with this spelling was originally a boys name. [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] would be nice. Or how about [name_f]Veda[/name_f] [name_m]Emmerson[/name_m]/[name_f]Vita[/name_f] [name_m]Emmerson[/name_m]?
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] that helps. I know you said you were picky with girls names but if you want help we (at least I ) will suggest a ton. [name_m]Just[/name_m] give us some guidelines or explain what you don’t like or do and I’d be happy to come up with things. (We might not find anything that’s as great to you as [name_m]Emmerson[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u], but at least then you’ll know, right?)
PS: Picky is good. you wouldn’t just want to give your kid any name. It’s got to be just right!!!
I’m open to suggestions, I just don’t like frilly girl names for me. There are ones I like and think are pretty, but just not for me. And I don’t really like when a name is really popular.
Thank you all for your advice and help. I appreciate it!!! You’re all great!
how about [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]/[name_f]Emmalyn[/name_f] [name_u]James[/name_u]? Similar to [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], but definitely feminine names
I honestly hate that [name_u]James[/name_u] (which has been around for centuries as a masculine name) is now being considered as a girl’s name the concept of ruining the history of [name_u]James[/name_u] by changing the name’s gender feels ugly. I understand that you want to honour your family but couldn’t you save the name for another child later on or use more feminine versions of it, instead of butchering [name_u]James[/name_u]. I also hate that [name_u]James[/name_u] seems to be considered unisex by nameberry.
Concerning [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] it is ultimately a masculine name, as it has the ‘son’ ending but [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] doesn’t feel classically masculine like [name_u]James[/name_u]. I think because there has been a surge in use of the name [name_u]Madison[/name_u] and [name_u]Addison[/name_u] etc, [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] does work (begrudgingly so) on girls. Note just because I’m saying this doesn’t mean I agree on [name_u]James[/name_u] being used on a girl. Still you’ve loved [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] for such a long time I think you should use it as a first name for your daughter despite her growing popularity.
Yet [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] doesn’t work well for girl it sounds like a boy’s name and looks like a boys name!!
[name_u]James[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] sounds off. Like when your looking at the register and the register is surname first and first name second, if that makes sense!! I think [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_u]James[/name_u] would work, I think masculine names in the middle name slot works nicely, for example [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_u]Blake[/name_u] is attractive.
You could use [name_u]Jamie[/name_u]? [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] would work better if your determined to have [name_u]James[/name_u] upfront and ditch [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] altogether. Or switch it up entirely and have [name_f]Jamesetta[/name_f] [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] or [name_f]Jamesina[/name_f] [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]?
: )
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] is a male name. There’s nothing feminine about it. If you had a great-grandmother named [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and a grandmother named [name_u]Jean[/name_u], would you name your son [name_f]Emma[/name_f] [name_u]Jean[/name_u]? I doubt it.
