Help us pick a boy's name starting with J, please!

We know that we want our son to have a name starting with J. We’ve come up with [name]Jacob[/name], [name]James[/name], [name]John[/name]/[name]Jonathan[/name], [name]Jeremiah[/name], [name]Jason[/name], [name]Jonas[/name], and [name]Joss[/name]. What do you like, and why? As far as narrowing it down, we’re already leaning toward [name]John[/name] – hubby likes the longer name better, but prefers the “h” in the short version; we’re also struggling with [name]James[/name] and [name]Jeremiah[/name] because of the nicknames [name]Jim[/name] and [name]Jerry[/name]. Is this an issue we should be concerned about? Anything else we should consider when deciding? Help!

Thanks!
[name]Erin[/name]

I like [name]John[/name]. It’s so classic and handsome. There’s also [name]Jack[/name], [name]Jude[/name], [name]Joseph[/name], [name]Jared[/name], [name]Jonah[/name], [name]Jesse[/name], and [name]Jasper[/name].

I love [name]Jonas[/name]! So striking and quirky and timeless. I love the pp’s suggestions of [name]Jack[/name], [name]Jude[/name], [name]Joseph[/name], and [name]Jonah[/name], and I think [name]Josiah[/name], [name]Jameson[/name], [name]Julian[/name], and [name]Jordan[/name] are other great options.

As for [name]Jimmy[/name] and [name]Jerry[/name]/[name]Jim[/name] and [name]Jerry[/name], I don’t think it’s a huge deal. I know a ton of Jeremiahs (apparently, it was quite trendy in my generation among my church’s denomination)–one went by [name]Jeremy[/name], most of them have gone by their full names, and one went by [name]Jeremiah[/name] to most but his mom always called him [name]Miah[/name], too. I’ve never heard of a [name]Jeremiah[/name] going by [name]Jerry[/name], so I think you’re safe there! You could call him [name]Remy[/name] every so often, just to ensure he never gets [name]Jerry[/name], if that’s a concern for you. I don’t think most [name]James[/name]/Jamesons get [name]Jim[/name]/[name]Jimmy[/name]/etc. unless their parents specifically want it these days… those nns are pretty dated to our parents’ and our generation. A good many [name]James[/name] I know are just [name]James[/name], and the nn [name]Jamie[/name] is very much coming back into style for boys, too, so that might be another option.

Good luck!

I like [name]Jonathon[/name] nn [name]John[/name], or JJ or even [name]Joe[/name].

Thanks, [name]Amy[/name]! My best friend in high school was named [name]Jeremiah[/name] after his father. His dad was [name]Jerry[/name], but he was either [name]Jer[/name] or [name]Miah[/name], so I didn’t know if it would be a problem. Unfortunately, every [name]James[/name] I know is [name]Jim[/name] or [name]Jimmy[/name] :frowning: I had already tried [name]Jude[/name], [name]Jared[/name], [name]Jonah[/name], [name]Jesse[/name], and [name]Jordan[/name] on my husband, and he struck them off, so sorry to make you do extra work! But you gave me the idea to maybe try for [name]Judah[/name], it’s similar in flavor to you guys’ suggestions.

I like [name]Jem[/name] or [name]Jemmy[/name] as a nickname for [name]Jeremy[/name]/[name]Jeremiah[/name]. If you start using it, people will pick it up.

Many of your names are my “safe” names- names that are more formal and masculine than my faves but have softer nicknames

I love [name]Joss[/name]. I’d use [name]Jody[/name] or [name]Joss[/name] instead of [name]Joe[/name] or [name]Joey[/name] as nn for [name]Joseph[/name]

I like [name]John[/name] because I love the nn [name]Jack[/name]/[name]Jackie[/name]

[name]James[/name] gives the nn [name]Shea[/name] ([name]Seamus[/name] = [name]James[/name]).

I’d use [name]Jeremiah[/name] as a way to get [name]Remy[/name] since I’m not sure of it as a stand alone name

U could even name him [name]Jones[/name]. [name]James[/name] is great too and did u think of [name]Jeremy[/name]. I personally like the nicknames of the last two but i also know a baby [name]James[/name] and noone calls him [name]Jim[/name]

I was thinking [name]Jones[/name] as well! My personal favorite is [name]Jonah[/name] nn [name]Jones[/name]. But [name]Jonathan[/name] nn [name]Jones[/name] works as well!

[name]Jack[/name] is my fave but am a little biased…

I love [name]Judah[/name], one of my BF’s named her son [name]Judah[/name] [name]Sage[/name] and is adorable and sweet… also love [name]Jonah[/name], [name]Jeremiah[/name] and [name]James[/name]. There is something strong and simple about [name]John[/name] though. I feel like so many people are naming their kids unique names now the simple classics stand out even more… Good [name]Luck[/name]!
