So here we are at the end of our first pregnancy and we can’t agree on a name. We like the idea of using a family name or a variation of it. At the same time, the choices below are very limiting and I don’t want to offend anyone by not choosing a name from their side (Can you pick a name from mom’s side and not dad’s?). Irish names are also great. My husband is obsessed with [name]Ruby[/name] (a family name) but I can’t seem to fall in love with it or any other for that matter. Our LN is [name]Johnston[/name]. What do you think?
First are the names I don’t like, and some possible solutions.
[name]Mary[/name]: I just don’t like it. It sounds too plain for me—and that’s coming from someone who likes [name]Jane[/name]! [name]Mary[/name] is just too boring.
Possible solution: [name]Mariana[/name]
[name]Lorraine[/name]: It is just so, so dated to me.
Possible solution: [name]Laura[/name]/[name]Lauren[/name]/[name]Laurel[/name]
[name]Ryan[/name]: Not a fan of boy’s names on girls (and yes, I know [name]Ryan[/name] IS used on lots of girls—it just isn’t my fave).
Possible solution: [name]Rhiannon[/name]/[name]Remi[/name]
Arynn: Feels made-up to me.
Possible solution: [name]Ariel[/name]
[name]Elena[/name]: I just have bad connections with the name. Sorry!
Possible solution: [name]Lainey[/name]
[name]Natalie[/name]: Dated.
Possible solution: [name]Natasha[/name]
Comments on the names I like:
[name]Emmeline[/name]: Such a great alternative to [name]Emma[/name]!
[name]Ruby[/name]: Very sweet and stylish.
[name]Josephine[/name]: I [name]LOVE[/name] the nickname [name]Josie[/name]! So cute.
[name]Anna[/name]: Always a classic. I love it.
[name]Quinn[/name]: Spunky and cute.
[name]Maeve[/name]: Lively and pretty to the ear.
[name]Violet[/name]: Sweet as always.
[name]Juliana[/name]: Well, I prefer [name]Julia[/name] or [name]Juliet[/name], but it still is pretty.
You have some great names! Good luck, and I hope I’ve been helpful.
P.S. - If your husband loves [name]Ruby[/name] but you only just like it, how about putting it in the middle?
My favorite is [name]Mary[/name]. It’s common, but I honestly haven’t met someone under the age of 50 that is named [name]Mary[/name] in the last decade.
