Help! We still need to choose our boys name...now 4 weeks old!

My hub and I have a 4 week old boy - still with no name yet!

My previous post on here has helped hone our long list to a shorter list of names we both like (we just don’t love any boys names!..I cant understand how this can be but alas it is).

Meaning is important to us. We are UK based and largely prefer Latin / Welsh heritage names. We like nature names & unusual etc, but nothing popular or ‘modern’.

  • [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] (this name was our fave original. We shared it and got v. negative comments from our family & friends who said it sounded like Quim & they would be bullied! - so its probably out :frowning: )

  • [name_m]Xander[/name_m] (I am now wavering on this one)

  • [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] (like meaning but does it sound like ‘[name_f]Emma[/name_f] is…’?)

  • [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] (I waver on this one)

  • [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] (hub wavers on this one)

  • [name_u]Orion[/name_u] (hub is wavering on this)

  • [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] (said ex-saviour)

  • [name_u]Austyn[/name_u] (spelling like this or other ways)

  • [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] (middle name pref) - we both like it after skier after [name_m]Bode[/name_m] [name_m]Miller[/name_m], just not sure of spelling, plus we found out [name_m]Bode[/name_m] isnt his first name

  • [name_m]Felix[/name_m] / [name_u]Rex[/name_u] (would consider these only as middle names - hub likes [name_m]Felix[/name_m] & I like [name_u]Rex[/name_u] but neither of us likes the others enough to be a first name)

We also love nicknames and are not sure what any of these names would provide as nickname :-?

We have made the decision to not tell anyone close to us our final choice list (after we shared a few and got the negative comments!), so we haven’t had anyone to talk to this about since sharing [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]! [name_f]Happy[/name_f] for your feedback though.

All input is appreciated

[name_u]Quinn[/name_u] is, by far, my favorite! Sometimes our families aren’t aware of naming trends. [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] will not be bullied over his name. It’s a long standing name that has made a come back. He fits right in with current names without being overly popular.

For me, [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] is a perfect combination of handsome, cozy, elegant, soft, and strong. I really hope you go with your first love. The family will get used to it. I can almost guarantee they would love it within a month.

Thanks for your support. However, now we cant get quim (british slang for vagina!) out of our heads now, so its ruined for us. That friends quickly mentioned the connection without prompt indicates that it’s not just family who are concerned.

It’s dashed our naming confidence!

:frowning:

I like [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] and [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] best from your list, then [name_m]Austin[/name_m] and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]. I like [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] best of your mn choices, but [name_m]Felix[/name_m] / [name_u]Rex[/name_u] are good too paired with the right first name.

While I do like [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] the best, I also love the sound of [name_m]Xander[/name_m] [name_m]Felix[/name_m]!

I adore [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m], [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m], [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] (although pronounced ZAY-vee-ər), and [name_m]Austin[/name_m] [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m]/[name_m]Felix[/name_m]. [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m], if pronounced ZAY-vee-ər is my favorite. If pronounced with an X sound, [name_m]Austin[/name_m] [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] or [name_m]Austin[/name_m] [name_m]Felix[/name_m] is my favorite.

I like [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] but i know how one bad comment can ruin a name for you.
Im also fond of [name_m]Xander[/name_m] Bohdi or [name_m]Austin[/name_m] Bohdi (i used the [name_m]Austin[/name_m] spelling this way because its what im most familiar with but feel free to spell it however you prefer. )

What about [name_m]Quintin[/name_m] or [name_m]Quentin[/name_m] or [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] as alternatives to [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]? (I also really like the name [name_u]Quinn[/name_u], it makes me think of the [name_m]Bob[/name_m] [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] song The Mighty [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]–I’m American and had to look up the word quim, so thanks for enlarging my vocabulary  But I can see why you would want to avoid that connection now that it’s been brought up…)

The good news is you have a great list of alternative names lined up. Honestly I think these are all very handsome names. Here are my thoughts on them…

  • [name_m]Xander[/name_m] --I prefer this to [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] because I think it has a more straight-forward pronunciation, but you still get the cool “X” initial; nns of [name_m]Ander[/name_m], [name_f]Xandy[/name_f]
  • [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] --I pronounce this as two-syllables, so I don’t hear “[name_f]Emma/name_f is” at all. I think it’s a great name. You could also consider [name_u]Emmett[/name_u], but I think [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] is better for you because of the heritage connection you’re looking for. I met a little boy named [name_m]Emmanuel[/name_m] with the nickname [name_f]Emi[/name_f] the other day; though I’m used to hearing [name_f]Emi[/name_f] for a girl, I thought for a little boy it was quite adorable. Rys also works as a nn.
  • [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] --I love this; you could also consider [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] (gets the “n” sound from [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] as a tie-in?)
  • [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] --this is a brand name for condoms in the US, and for ice cream in [name_f]France[/name_f], but outside of those contexts, it is a also a handsome name
  • [name_u]Orion[/name_u] --I like it quite a bit, feels a little bit hippy-ish, but in a good way. There’s also the slightly more conservative [name_m]Orin[/name_m] (same “'in” ending as [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]?)
  • [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] --had this on my list for a while, but these days I lean toward [name_m]Xander[/name_m] because I prefer the “z”-sound at the beginning rather than the “ex” of [name_m]Xavier[/name_m]. Still, this is also a handsome choice.
  • [name_u]Austyn[/name_u] --in the US “-yn” tends to be used so commonly on girls names that I’ve grown to see it that way. I like [name_u]Austen[/name_u] like the author, or [name_m]Austin[/name_m] like the city, though to be honest I like [name_m]Augustin[/name_m] better than both.

Out of your middle name possibilities [name_m]Felix[/name_m] is by far my favorite.

Good luck, I’d love to hear what you settle on, and above all congratulations on your sweet (and soon to be endowed with an excellent name) little boy!

I also prefer the [name_u]Austen[/name_u] spelling. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Felix[/name_m]!

I was also going to suggest [name_m]Quinton[/name_m] with the short form [name_m]Quint[/name_m]. You can always shorten it further to [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]. If you agree on this name and love it, choose it and let the others be the ones to stifle themselves!!!

FWIW, I had no idea what Quim was either.

My favourites are
[name_u]Orion[/name_u] [name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m] [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m]

I’d go with [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] [name_m]Felix[/name_m]. Cool name!

I love [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] - it has a great sound and I don’t think it’s too similar to [name_f]Emma[/name_f]. There isn’t an obvious nickname but maybe if the middle name starts with J or something you could call him EJ. [name_m]Magnus[/name_m], [name_u]Orion[/name_u], and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] I also like. [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] is very strong sounding and it’s unique - but people can easily spell and pronounce it. [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] sound very feminine to me as I only know girls with those names.

What about [name_m]Gareth[/name_m], [name_m]Idris[/name_m], [name_u]Rhys[/name_u], or [name_m]Leander[/name_m]?

I like [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] or [name_m]Quentin[/name_m] better anyway if you can’t use [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]. Great names.

[name_m]Emrys[/name_m] is my favorite from your list. No, it doesn’t sound like [name_f]Emma[/name_f].

I haven’t seen [name_u]Quincy[/name_u] mentioned a longer alternative to [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]. I like the suggestion of [name_m]Augustin[/name_m] which could be shortened to [name_m]Austin[/name_m]. I do prefer the spelling of [name_u]Austen[/name_u].
