HELP! What do you think of when you hear the name Allegra?

I am expecting a girl in [name]March[/name]. My first DD’s name is [name]Anneliese[/name]. I get nothing but complements on the name- however, my choice for my second DD, [name]Allegra[/name], is getting panned because everyone associates it with a cold medicine ([name]Allegra[/name] D)

I wanted something melodic, elegant and romantic which goes with [name]Anneliese[/name] and I feel that [name]Allegra[/name] fits the bill. I love the name! However 75% of the people I’ve told make a face at it. What to do when you feel a name is right for your child? I don’t think kids will know about the darn medicine and certainly it will be phased out soon — its not like I’m naming her Tylenol for heaven sakes!

The authors of the [name]Baby[/name] Name Bible gave it a star as an overall great pick but mentioned nothing about this drug association. Wondering what y’all think. Thanks for your honest input!

I associated it with music (allegro tempo) until the medicine came along. It’s a lovely name, and I think if you can live with people’s initially startled reaction, you should go with it. Everything changes once an abstract name is attached to a real baby anyway; the name my sister chose made me retch, but now I couldn’t think of that sweet little girl any other way!

[name]Just[/name] make sure her middle name doesn’t start with D.

I love the name [name]Allegra[/name]. When I told my sister about it, she made a face, too. But I think it is becoming more popular and less associated with the medicine. It also means happy, which I love. If you watch the movie “[name]Hitch[/name]” there is a character [name]Allegra[/name] [name]Cole[/name], who is adorable, which may make you like the name even more!

I love the name [name]Annaliese[/name]! [name]Allegra[/name] is also really beautiful. They shouldn’t have named a medicine after it. I do experience the tension between the beautiful sound of [name]Allegra[/name] paired with the sneezy connotation of the medicine brand. If the medicine connotation really begins to bother you, maybe you would like [name]Clarissa[/name], [name]Adelaide[/name] nn [name]Addie[/name], [name]Simona[/name], [name]Georgia[/name], [name]Paulina[/name] nn [name]Polly[/name] or [name]Lena[/name], [name]Margaret[/name] nn [name]Maisie[/name], or [name]Millicent[/name] nn [name]Millie[/name]. To me, all of these names have a similar flowery, alpine feeling that [name]Annaliese[/name] has. I also thought of the girls’ names from “The Sound of [name]Music[/name]”: [name]Brigitta[/name], [name]Marta[/name], [name]Louisa[/name], [name]Liesel[/name] (too much like [name]Anneliese[/name]), and [name]Greta[/name]. Then there’s [name]Mariel[/name], a lovely form of [name]Mary[/name]. That would be a great name to pair with an equally lovely form of [name]Ann[/name]. But go with [name]Allegra[/name] if you absolutely adore it.

It’s a beautiful name, making me think of happiness. Nice choice!

[name]Both[/name] of those names are beautiful. I agree that [name]Allegra[/name] sounds pretty and happy!

Honestly, It reminds me of [name]Allegra[/name] [name]Cole[/name] from “[name]Hitch[/name]”, too… and even though she was a nice character, it’s not my style. [name]Annaliese[/name] is a lot prettier sounding to me. Other “A” names I think would go nicely with [name]Annaliese[/name]:

[name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Adelina[/name]/[name]Adeline[/name]
[name]Amara[/name]
[name]Amaya[/name]
[name]Adrienne[/name]
[name]Adriana[/name]
[name]Ariana[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name]
[name]Audra[/name]

As someone who’s seriously considering [name]Jemima[/name] for a girl of her own (and [name]Cosmo[/name] for a boy!), I say go with [name]Allegra[/name]! It’s a lovely, warm, happy & elegant name. The medicine won’t be around forever, brands change, and quite often, rapidly vanish. If you’re really second guessing yourself over this, think this way “If I didn’t use it, will I regret it in ten years?” I’d say from the sound of you, the answer would be yes. Some things just don’t need mass approval and your childs name is one of those things. If [name]Allegra[/name] is what you and your husband can agree on, then ignore all the naysayers. And next time? Tell them you’re naming it (pick something utterly ridiculous, we use things like [name]Thor[/name] & [name]Euridyce[/name])! They’ll be so relieved it’s something other than (insert something ridiculous here), they won’t say another word!

I really think [name]Allegra[/name] is beautiful. I wish I could get my other half to agree on it!

I love [name]Allegra[/name], it reminds me of ballet for some reason… very elegant and beautiful…

I think of Viagra! :open_mouth: Or allergy medicine. Too bad, because if you think of [name]Allegra[/name] with absolutely no influences it’s pretty.

I must be living in my own world because I’ve never heard of this medicine. The name itself is nms, but I can still hear how nice a name it is. If it fits ‘your’ naming style bill then I wouldn’t worry too much of what a few people think of it.

My dd’s name is [name]Jocelyn[/name] [name]Anneliese[/name], so I’m a big fan of your other dd’s name. I don’t think you really have to look any further, but here are a couple names I especially like with [name]Anneliese[/name]…
*[name]Amira[/name] ([name]Mira[/name] or Meira)
*Geneve ([name]Neve[/name])
*[name]Anya[/name]
*[name]Lorelei[/name]
*[name]Celeste[/name]
*[name]Audra[/name]

Honestly, I think of allergies when I hear [name]Allegra[/name]

Sorry, but I think of the allergy medicine. Of course, I used to take this drug.

mmwhite, [name]Allegra[/name] makes you think of Ballet because of Ballerina [name]Allegra[/name] [name]Kent[/name]. She predates the medicine but still is an overwhelming thought when [name]Allegra[/name] is mentioned. I keep seeing the name [name]Allegra[/name] Clegg in the credits of movies I watch. She was an executive producer for “Transformers”. here’s her IMDb page: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0165937/
Still in doubt about [name]Allegra[/name]? Google is your friend! See how many non drug links come up and compared to drug links. You might be surprised, I found a [name]California[/name] band, the ballerina, The producer, a writer among the medicine links. I only dug down a page too. I still think [name]Allegra[/name]'s a fantastic choice, please, go with your heart, not your head!

I personally adore [name]Allegra[/name]. It’s a beautiful beautiful name, and I only associate it with lovely things such as music.
