Help with baby girl names please?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all-

Longtime lurker, first time poster. Wondering if you can help me with narrowing down our girl name choices. I’ll stick with first name choices for now and maybe do a second post on middle names if I’m able to narrow down the first names. Please be as honest as you like, that’s why I’m doing this- to get unfiltered opinions!

(Names are listed in no particular order).

[name_f]Valentina[/name_f]

[name_f]Willa[/name_f]

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]

[name_f]Esme[/name_f]

[name_f]Athena[/name_f]

[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]

[name_f]Farrah[/name_f]

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]

I should mention that for either [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] or [name_f]Veronica[/name_f], we would call her “V” or “[name_f]Vivi[/name_f]” depending on middle name.

Thanks all!

[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] – This one is a little over-the-top for me. I also can’t help but associate it with [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]'s [name_u]Day[/name_u]. It’s incredibly romantic. If I ignore that, it has many appealing sounds to it and makes a very pretty name. I think it makes a great potential middle name.

[name_f]Willa[/name_f] – have really grown to love this one. I love the simple charm of it.

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f] – Not a fan.

[name_f]Esme[/name_f] – A lot of nameberries love this name. I don’t.

[name_f]Athena[/name_f] – I think this is a lovely name that is different but accessible.

[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] – Not a fan.

[name_f]Farrah[/name_f] – always think of the actress but honestly would love to meet a little [name_f]Farrah[/name_f].

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] – It’s a little matronly for me, but I think there is a sweetness about it as well.

[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] - love. V is a cute nn, as is [name_f]Nina[/name_f].

[name_f]Willa[/name_f] - this is pretty but it feels a bit weak to me, like it’s missing something.

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f] - i like this one a lot. This may be due to association, but this name feels a bit mysterious, intellectual, artistic.

[name_f]Esme[/name_f] - love. Short, sweet, a bit exotic.

[name_f]Athena[/name_f] - very cute and spunky.

[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] - not my favorite, tho it does have an edgy- ness that I like…

[name_f]Farrah[/name_f] - pretty but similar to [name_f]Willa[/name_f], all soft, no edges.

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] - pretty but feels like it’s getting very popular. Maybe just on Nameberry…

So my faves are [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], [name_f]Esme[/name_f], [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] and [name_f]Athena[/name_f].

[name_f]Valentina[/name_f]–gorgeous! [name_f]My[/name_f] current favorite is [name_f]Ava[/name_f]-[name_f]Valentina[/name_f].

[name_f]Willa[/name_f]–eh

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]–nice. Prefer [name_f]Cecile[/name_f].

[name_f]Esme[/name_f]–I still think of the Disney villain from the Kuzco cartoon.

[name_f]Athena[/name_f]–gorgeous! A long time favorite!

[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]–pretty, but I much prefer [name_f]Veronique[/name_f] (mn)

[name_f]Farrah[/name_f]–too associated w/Fawcett

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]–ok…too close to [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] (the cow)

[name_f]Valentina[/name_f]— GORGEOUS. I would love to meet a little [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], as long as her nickname is never [name_f]Tina[/name_f].

[name_f]Willa[/name_f]— Very sweet and fun.

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]— I much prefer [name_f]Celia[/name_f].

[name_f]Esme[/name_f]— One of my all time favorites.

[name_f]Athena[/name_f]-- ANOTHER one of my all time favorites that I’ll sadly never get to use.

[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]— I don’t like this at all. I think you have much better choices on this list. It just sounds dated to me.

[name_f]Farrah[/name_f]-- Another gorgeous one. I’ve always found the spelling awkward for some reason, even though the sound is wonderful.

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]— Not my favorite on the list, but it’s not terrible, just nms.

You have great taste! [name_f]Athena[/name_f], [name_f]Willa[/name_f], [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], and [name_f]Esme[/name_f] are my favorites.

[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] - It’s growing on me. I’d never use it, but I’d love to meet more girls named [name_f]Valentina[/name_f].
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] - I love it, especially as a nickname for [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f].
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f] - Not really my style, but I quite like it.
[name_f]Esme[/name_f] - Sounds very [name_m]French[/name_m]. I like it.
[name_f]Athena[/name_f] - I’m probably the only person on Nameberry who dislikes it. I just think most goddess names are too much for a child.
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] - I love it, although it feels kinda dated.
[name_f]Farrah[/name_f] - I really like it.
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] - Not a fan, but it’s a great name.

Could you give us a “sounds like” or first initial of your last name-- I like a lot of these names, but if I were eliminating, how it flows with the last name would be a factor. Also, any idea about mns or anyone you are trying to honor? This often helps with eliminating some as well. This said, my favorites on your list are [name_f]Cecily[/name_f], [name_f]Esme[/name_f], [name_f]Athena[/name_f], and [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]-- these are all classic names with the first two being a bit lively and the last two being more elegant. [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] is very exotic-- and I don’t think most girls can pull it off. [name_f]Willa[/name_f] and [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] are okay, but they don’t float my boat. [name_f]Farrah[/name_f] is a little 70s and I do think Fawcett-- maybe it’s time for a comeback though?

Some possible combinations:

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f] [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] [name_f]Cecile[/name_f]
[name_f]Athena[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]

Other names you might like:

[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f]/[name_f]Helen[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Leila[/name_f]
[name_f]Leonie[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Marina[/name_f]
[name_f]Monica[/name_f]

[name_f]Sybil[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Victorine[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f]
[name_f]Viveca[/name_f]

[name_f]Valentina[/name_f]: Too many syllables for my taste. Call me crazy, but I actually prefer straight forward [name_u]Valentine[/name_u].

[name_f]Willa[/name_f]: I prefer [name_f]Willow[/name_f], though [name_f]Willa[/name_f] is probably less common and less trendy.

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]: Hate it! I do like [name_f]Celia[/name_f].

[name_f]Esme[/name_f]: Hate it even more.

[name_f]Athena[/name_f]: Beautiful. I know one person named [name_f]Athena[/name_f] and I think it’s definitely usable.

[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]: I think this name is underrated, though it’s not my style - too many syllables.

[name_f]Farrah[/name_f]: [name_f]Farrah[/name_f] is by far my favorite off your list! It’s familiar yet uncommon at the same time and would also travel well.

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]: nms, and wouldn’t want my child lumped in with all the [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Eliana[/name_f]'s, etc. of the world…

[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] - has a very flamboyant, romantic sound, but has sharp edges with the V and “teen” sound. She’ll get [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]'s day jokes.

[name_f]Willa[/name_f] - pretty, but feel a little nicknamey. I love it as a nickname for [name_f]Willow[/name_f].

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f] - gorgeous! [name_f]My[/name_f] favourite on your list. Classic, feminine, with a mellifluous sound.

[name_f]Esme[/name_f] - spunky and rambunctious. [name_f]My[/name_f] third favourite on your list.

[name_f]Athena[/name_f] - the goddess is a great role model, but I’m not a huge fan of the name.

[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] - dated, with a harsh sound.

[name_f]Farrah[/name_f] - see [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]. Makes me think of big hair, leotards and glitter.

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] - Yes! [name_f]My[/name_f] second favourite. The wonderful balance of having a cutesy, girly nature that she’ll love as a little kid, with a pretty, elegant seriousness that will carry her through adulthood.

1: [name_f]Cecily[/name_f]
2: [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]
3: [name_f]Esme[/name_f]

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] & [name_f]Esme[/name_f] are my faves from your list!

[QUOTE=stinkyfatface;2278758][name_m]Hi[/name_m] all-

Longtime lurker, first time poster. Wondering if you can help me with narrowing down our girl name choices?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] and happy to have you onboard. Here are my ideas on your list.

[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] A pretty name but it locks you into a more European style for future siblings eg [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] and [name_m]Raphael[/name_m]. I would prefer [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] to get nn of [name_f]Vivi[/name_f]

[name_f]Willa[/name_f] Nice but in my mind doesn’t compare with the lovely [name_f]Willow[/name_f]

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f] I do like it but it is a no nonsense style name like [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f] and [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] so if this is your stye go for it. If you prefer a frillier style (like me) then [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] would fit beautifully and the combo would be [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] [name_f]Willow[/name_f]

[name_f]Esme[/name_f], and [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]/[name_f]Vera[/name_f] are sweet, girly vintage style names and would go with a sister [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] well

[name_f]Athena[/name_f] This is too over the top for me and I don’t think it is very pretty.

[name_f]Farrah[/name_f] It’s okay but will need siblings with similarly exotic style names like [name_f]Soraya[/name_f]

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] I find [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] a bit too hard for my tastes I much prefer [name_f]Elise[/name_f], [name_f]Ellen[/name_f], [name_f]Elvy[/name_f]

[name_f]Valentina[/name_f]- This is pretty but I prefer V names like [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] if you are going to use [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] or perhaps [name_f]Violet[/name_f]

[name_f]Willa[/name_f]- I love this but it seems like a nn for perhaps [name_f]Willow[/name_f] of [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] or even [name_f]Williamina[/name_f]

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]- This is nice, but I much prefer [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]/[name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] or [name_f]Celia[/name_f], also have a bit of a gp for [name_f]Celeste[/name_f]

[name_f]Esme[/name_f]- This is lovely, short and sweet like [name_f]Emme[/name_f], [name_f]Enid[/name_f], [name_f]Erin[/name_f] or [name_f]Edie[/name_f] and is a good alternate to the very popular [name_f]Eve[/name_f] . Like [name_f]Esther[/name_f] or Hesta too.

[name_f]Athena[/name_f]- [name_u]Love[/name_u] this! Its a little unusual but great meaning, I think [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] has a similar meaning- love that too

[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]- Really dislike, if you are going for a V, as above I sould prefer [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f], but [name_f]Valerie[/name_f] is nice too

[name_f]Farrah[/name_f] - [name_m]Just[/name_m] hear Fawcett really, had to look it up- Happiness is a lovely meaning and It does have a lovely sound!

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]- Much prefer [name_f]Esme[/name_f] or the othe E names above. Sorry it juch seems like another way to get to Ellies, after [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Elena[/name_f], [name_f]Elaine[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Ellen[/name_f], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_u]Elliot[/name_u], [name_f]Elle[/name_f]. Or even [name_f]Stella[/name_f] (which i love by the way)

I think [name_f]Willa[/name_f], [name_f]Athena[/name_f] and [name_f]Farrah[/name_f] are my faves as they are a litte different. Unless you go for the alternates above, [name_f]My[/name_f] list includes [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]/[name_f]Celia[/name_f], [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] and [name_f]Enid[/name_f]!

I really don’t like [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] or [name_f]Willa[/name_f]. Too dated imo.

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f] and [name_f]Esme[/name_f] are my favourites. I love them both and I adore Cecee as a nickname for [name_f]Cecily[/name_f].

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is very pretty and is my next favourite.

[name_f]Farrah[/name_f], [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] and [name_f]Athena[/name_f] are okay, but I wouldn’t use them. I do however like [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] as a nickname, like you said

[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] - Very frilly, girly and fancy. I have nothing against it, especially if you’d be calling her [name_f]Vivi[/name_f].

[name_f]Willa[/name_f] - Doesn’t sound like a complete name to me.

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f] - Never liked it.

[name_f]Esme[/name_f] - I just don’t like it.

[name_f]Athena[/name_f] - Screams Greek to me. If you like that, that’s great.

[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]

[name_f]Farrah[/name_f] - It’s different and sounds fresh. I like it.

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] - Strikes me as very dated and [name_m]German[/name_m], but I could be wrong.

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] and [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] are definite favorites. I like [name_f]Athena[/name_f] too, it’s unusual and I love the mythological figure and that libraries and scientific institutions were sometimes called atheneums way back when – it also strikes me as very wearable having known a girl named [name_f]Athena[/name_f] once.

[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] - a pretty name but a little too frilly and feminine for my taste.

[name_f]Willa[/name_f] - I like the literary connection

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f] - an underused vintage gem. Gorgeous.

[name_f]Esme[/name_f] - this is soft and femine with an otherworldly vibe. [name_u]Love[/name_u] it!

[name_f]Athena[/name_f] - not a fan

[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] - I like this name but many people don’t for some reason. I guess it may have something to do with [name_m]Archie[/name_m]'s unattainable dreamgirl.

[name_f]Farrah[/name_f] - still strongly associated with Ms Fawcett for me or the last [name_f]Empress[/name_f] of Iran ([name_f]Farah[/name_f] Diba). I think you would probably have to choose more exotic options for any future children too.

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] - short and pretty

Top Three

1 [name_f]Cecily[/name_f]
2 [name_f]Esme[/name_f]
3 [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]

Honorable Mention: [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], [name_f]Willa[/name_f], [name_f]Farrah[/name_f] and [name_f]Esme[/name_f].

I like [name_f]Cecily[/name_f](prefer [name_f]Celia[/name_f] or [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]), [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] and [name_f]Athena[/name_f].

I don’t care for [name_f]Veronica[/name_f].

[name_f]Willa[/name_f] is my favorite from your list! [name_u]Love[/name_u] it. I also like [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] and [name_f]Elsa[/name_f].

[name_f]Valentina[/name_f]- familiar but a touch exotic and European, clearly feminine but with strong sounds.
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]- I like this as a nickname for [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] but don’t think it stands alone.
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]- prim, proper, feels quite Victorian-era English
[name_f]Esme[/name_f]- this always sounded slimy and grating to me, sorry
[name_f]Athena[/name_f]- strong and bold, but still feminine and a touch glamorous
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]- I like the sound but it gives off kind of a snooty vibe to me
[name_f]Farrah[/name_f]- I know a guy with a surname very similar to [name_f]Farrah[/name_f] (just one letter different) so can’t see it as a given name despite Ms Fawcett
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]- buttoned-up, demure, and sweet. I think of the character from Frozen only because I’ve heard so much about her (I haven’t seen the movie), and Baroness [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] Schraeder from The Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f] (who wasn’t actually a bad character, things just didn’t work out).

Top 3:

  1. [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]
  2. [name_f]Athena[/name_f]
  3. [name_f]Cecily[/name_f]

i like [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]! it’s unique and so warm and happy sounding.
