Help with boy name and last name

Hello all!

Our last name is [name_m]Cochran[/name_m] and can be shortened into a derogatory word so I have had to be careful with names. I wanted to name our first [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] but that would be leading him to teasing. So we landed on [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] which I love.

We are having another boy! I like names like:
[name_m]Grant[/name_m]
[name_m]Graham[/name_m]
[name_u]Wyatt[/name_u]
[name_u]Brooks[/name_u]
[name_m]Rhett[/name_m]

Husband thinks [name_m]Graham[/name_m] would be graham cracker so he doesn’t like it. But I can’t get over the name.

Any ideas or votes on current ones?

I think [name_m]Graham[/name_m] sounds fine!

[name_m]Grant[/name_m] and [name_u]Brooks[/name_u] are good too

[name_m]Braham[/name_m] is nice too. [name_m]Grant[/name_m] is even better, though! [name_u]Or[/name_u] [name_m]Garrison[/name_m]?

I can see how you’d have to be really thoughtful with first name choices!

  • [name_m]Grant[/name_m] [name_m]Cochran[/name_m] - I think this is very handsome and classic without being common. [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] and [name_m]Grant[/name_m] make wonderful siblings.
  • [name_m]Graham[/name_m] [name_m]Cochran[/name_m] - I can see the graham cracker association, especially with the hard C last name. If your husband doesn’t care for [name_m]Graham[/name_m], what about [name_m]Graeme[/name_m]? It’s a Scottish variant that is still pronounced GREY-uhm, but without the spelling so closely associated with the crackers. I think [name_m]Graeme[/name_m] and [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] would still work as a sibset.
  • [name_u]Wyatt[/name_u] [name_m]Cochran[/name_m] - Something about this reads very [name_u]Wild[/name_u] [name_u]West[/name_u] to me, even more so than [name_u]Wyatt[/name_u] with a different surname. [name_u]Wyatt[/name_u] and [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] definitely work as brothers.
  • [name_u]Brooks[/name_u] [name_m]Cochran[/name_m] - I really love the name [name_u]Brooks[/name_u] for you, especially with brother [name_u]Hudson[/name_u], but I do think it’s not the best fit with the surname. The K in [name_u]Brooks[/name_u] and the hard C in [name_m]Cochran[/name_m] do trip up the tongue a bit.
  • [name_m]Rhett[/name_m] [name_m]Cochran[/name_m] - I will never not associate this name with Gone with the Wind, so I definitely get rakish, [name_u]Southern[/name_u], old money vibes. [name_m]Rhett[/name_m] and [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] make great siblings.

Overall, I think your list is really strong and solid! I can’t help but suggest more options though - it’s in my nature to come up with new ideas rather than narrowing things down!

I have a [name_m]Graham[/name_m], and while we don’t have a “C” last name he occasionally gets called [name_m]Graham[/name_m] Cracker. It doesn’t bother him nor me and my husband. It’s not a terrible or derogatory thing to be teased about IMO :woman_shrugging:t3:

I love the name but hubby can’t get past it

This was my suspicion with the name Graham - that there would always be a risk that someone might make the connection with graham crackers regardless of the surname it was paired with. I don’t think graham crackers are a terrible association, and Graham is a pretty well-established name, so personally I wouldn’t worry about this.

I think all of the names on your list work well with your surname! I am partial to Graham myself, and I really like the sounds of Wyatt Cochran (Wyatt feels kind of spiky to me, if that makes sense, and Cochran is softer).

A few others you might or might not like (sorry for any repeats):

Heath Cochran
Bennett Cochran
Garrett Cochran
Asher Cochran
Oliver Cochran
Theodore Cochran

Thank you! I have had [name_u]Bennett[/name_u] on my list from the get go but hubby isn’t a fan.

I think any person named [name_m]Graham[/name_m] will get called [name_m]Graham[/name_m] Cracker regardless of what the last name is, but I, personally, don’t think it’s a negative association at all. I really love [name_m]Grant[/name_m] from your list and it sounds very similar to [name_m]Graham[/name_m] (also a great name), so that would be a good alternative.
