Our 3rd baby is due is 8 weeks and my partner and I cannot agree on a single name.
He wants a “traditional, strong man’s” name. I’m open to most names but some of the names he has suggested sound like they would only suit a grown man - not a baby or child.
I like Freddie, Sonny, Arlo, Noah, Oscar.
He wants to name the baby Richard after his grandfather. I don’t like it at all, and I don’t think it suits the siblings names.
We have 2 girls already, their names are Ivy & Violet.
Please help!
Ooh it’s so hard when the name styles are so different.
Would you consider [name_m]Richard[/name_m] in the middle spot? Then there’s a nice nod to [name_m]Richard[/name_m] but allows a different first name.
I’m not a huge fan of [name_m]Richard[/name_m] personally either (the teasing potential!) but I must confess I do quite like the short form of [name_m]Ritchie[/name_m]. I think that’s a lovely honour and a more updated name which I think pairs nicely with [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f].
Some other names that maybe you might both like are:
[name_u]Glenn[/name_u] (this is very traditional but also has a nice nature nod like your daughters)
[name_m]Ford[/name_m]
[name_u]Oleander[/name_u] (maybe too adventurous…nn of Ollie)
[name_u]Miles[/name_u]
[name_m]Huon[/name_m]
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]
All the best in sure you will find something you both love in the end!
[name_f]My[/name_f] first thought with [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] was [name_u]Jasper[/name_u]! Also, [name_u]Miles[/name_u] or [name_m]Silas[/name_m]. [name_u]Ivy[/name_u], [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_u]Miles[/name_u] / [name_m]Silas[/name_m] all have that long I sound. Definitely second @Frostivich ‘s suggestion of [name_u]Miles[/name_u].
I love [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] or [name_u]Noah[/name_u] with [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f]! Would you consider [name_m]Richard[/name_m] as a middle name instead? It’s classic but doesn’t really fit with [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f].
I love Arlo!!!
Like others have suggested, maybe use the short form [name_m]Ritchie[/name_m] or put it in as a middle name?
Someone suggested [name_u]Glenn[/name_u], and I think it fits perfectly! A very traditional masculine sounding name that fits quite well with [name_f]Violet[/name_f] + [name_u]Ivy[/name_u]!
[name_u]Glenn[/name_u] [name_m]Ritchie[/name_m] would be my top pick, but here are some other names I like.
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
[name_u]James[/name_u] (classic but fits nicely!)
[name_u]David[/name_u]
[name_m]Anson[/name_m]
[name_m]Hansen[/name_m]
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m]
[name_m]Garett[/name_m]
Hmmm, on the one hand, I’ve notice fathers will typically happily give daughters quite out-there (or else dainty, or else unisex) names but often won’t go for unisex/softer/less traditional names for their sons. On the other hand, I’m with him on naming a child for their life as an adult. A lot of parents I know have suddenly dropped a solid, beautiful name for a super cutesy one once the baby arrived because the didn’t yet look like a grown person’s name - even though the sweeter name chosen only really works for 2-5 years for eg. Having said that (lol), I can see why you’re lukewarm on Richard. (And in case this needs saying, this all sounds a lot more intense on here - don’t want to start a “a random on the internet says” situation. ;))
I’ll try to give some suggestions that are both more current and pretty to match Ivy & Violet but still solid and reliable (and related to Richard where I can):
Archer (a nod to Richard via the letters) nn Archie
Charles nn Charlie or Arlo (again a nod to Richard via the letters in the name)
Hugo (need to check but think meaning of name connects to meaning of Richard)
Hudson (as above)
Ryker (also links to Richard, “rich”)
Otherwise, I would use Richard as a middle name for a longer name (ie not a nickname-name):
Oscar Richard nn Oz/Ozzie
Frederick Richard nn Freddie
Wilfred Richard nn Freddie/Wilfy
Emerson Richard nn Sonny
Edison Richard nn Eddie/Sonny
Grayson Richard nn Sonny
Sebastian Richard
Alexander Richard nn Xander
Thomas Richard
Hope that helps!
Edit: agree that if you use Frederick that could also be a nod to Richard so could go in first group of names
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] has a similar meaning to [name_m]Richard[/name_m] and the [name_m]Rick[/name_m] sound? - you could use [name_u]Freddie[/name_u]?
[name_u]Henry[/name_u] - has a similar meaning to [name_m]Richard[/name_m] but a softer vibe of your names - and fits with I and V
[name_m]Ritchie[/name_m], [name_u]Ricky[/name_u], [name_m]Rico[/name_m] - variants of [name_m]Richard[/name_m] that feel a bit more in line with the nicknamey feel of your choices and with [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_u]Robin[/name_u], [name_m]Rufus[/name_m], [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], [name_m]Ralph[/name_m] - the R of [name_m]Richard[/name_m] but a bit more in line with I and V and your choices
A few names that feel somewhere between ‘traditional/strong’ and the gentler/bubbly/modern-but-vintage feel of yours (and go with I and V):
[name_f]My[/name_f] first thought was that you might want to look into names ending in -son. You could have the nickname [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] and your husband would get a name that sounds quite traditional and masculine!
Such as…
[name_u]Jackson[/name_u]
[name_u]Anderson[/name_u]
[name_m]Harrison[/name_m]
[name_m]Jefferson[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawson[/name_u]
[name_u]Nelson[/name_u]
[name_u]Wilson[/name_u]
[name_m]Gibson[/name_m]
[name_u]Or[/name_u] since [name_m]Richard[/name_m] means strong ruler, maybe a name with a similar meaning could be a nod to his grandfather, like…
[name_m]Andrew[/name_m] / [name_m]Anders[/name_m] / [name_u]Anderson[/name_u]
[name_u]Griffin[/name_u]
[name_m]Griffith[/name_m]
[name_m]Arne[/name_m]
[name_m]Eric[/name_m]
[name_m]Frederic[/name_m] (with the nickname [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] like others have already mentioned!)
[name_u]Henry[/name_u] or [name_m]Henrik[/name_m] / [name_m]Henrick[/name_m] / [name_m]Henrich[/name_m] (you’d get the [name_m]Rick[/name_m] sound there too so another link to Richard)
how about [name_u]Edward[/name_u]? it’s got the same ending as [name_m]Richard[/name_m] (so it could be a subtle nod) and it’s a traditional strong man’s name, while also sounding good with [name_u]Ivy[/name_u] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f]!
